Brian (Kiwi) Smith 1998 – 2019 Brian has been teaching since 1987. He has taught in various schools in New Zealand before moving to St Pat’s in July 1998. During his time at the College, Brian has taught Religion & Ethics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Over his long and distinguished career, he has been generous in helping those around him and has held the position of Head of Science Department. Brian has volunteered coaching many St Pat’s soccer and badminton teams over his time at the College. Coming away with some outstanding wins and some challenging defeats. Brian’s love for science and maths subjects have seen him guide students in many competitions like the ANCQ Chemistry and Titration competitions. Brian is an educator with a deep sense of commitment and dedication to teaching. We thank him for educating students, inspiring other teachers and his dedication to the St Patrick’s College community. Brian is moving to start a new chapter in his life with his lovely wife in Hervey Bay. We wish them all the best. Debbie Harding 2002 – 2019 Debbie commenced working at the College in the role of College Receptionist. She then moved in 2008 to an administration assistant position, student data capture / student management for QCAA. Debbie quickly became a wizard in this area and her knowledge and professionalism will be greatly missed from the office area. Debbie is invaluable with her assistance and organisation with our cultural and sports awards nights. She compiles the invitations, awards, certificates and programs with little fuss. Her attention to detail and flare for style, ensures these events are a great success. Other activities she was called upon to assist with included the debutante Ball, booklets for various church services and printing mass programs. We wish Debbie all the best for the future. Debbie as you leave us, we thank you for your dedication and professionalism throughout the years in so many ways. We thank you for your gentle and caring nature towards students and staff. We wish you all the best in your retirement, but we won’t let you get away too easily and we will call on you to come back and help us with relief in the office. Page | 5 Kerry Braby 2007 - 2019 Kerry commenced working at St Patrick’s College Mackay as a Home Ec teacher and Head of Department in 2007. In 2008, she joined the Welfare Team as a Year Coordinator and has maintained this role since. Kerry became a QCAA Review panellist for Home Ec in 2008 and then stepped up to the position of District Review Panel Chair in 2012 today. Kerry is a dedicated and caring teacher, who relates well with our students. Her passion for teaching was recognised in 2018 when she received an Excellence in Teaching Award from the Home Ec Institute of Australia. Kerry is retiring from full-time teaching, but will still work as a relief teacher and intends to start her own small sewing business from home. She leaves St Patrick’s College after a peerless career of dedication to Catholic education has made an indelible mark on all who she has taught, worked with and led.

We also acknowledge the Bindal and Wulgurukaba People as the traditional custodians of the Townsville region and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the living Bindal and Wulgurukaba People today. Welcome to all members of our College community to Term 3. In real life it’s not what a person says that shows us who they are; it’s what they do. There is no better example of this with the life of Nelson Mandela. Last Wednesday was Nelson Mandela Day. This day is observed on Mandela’s birthday and was created to honour his legacy by promoting community service around the world. It was first observed on 18 July 2009 and, later that year, the United Nations declared that the day would be observed annually as Nelson Mandela International Day. Mandela Day calls on us all, every day, to make the world a better place. Each year on 18 July we look back on what has been done and forward to what will be done. Making every day a Mandela Day celebrates Madiba’s life and legacy in a sustainable way that will bring about enduring change.

Sir Peter Leitch Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 18th July 2017 Newsletter #179 Saying Goodbye to The Beast Photos courtesy of www.photosport.nz Bugger By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan OMETIMES I think we are cursed. If it would not for bad luck we wouldn’t have any kind at all. SWatching Shaun Johnson limp off was almost a bad as it gets. I say almost, because we then slumped from 22-18 up to get shellacked 34-22. But it all had such a horrible feeling of seen it all before, and what came after the last time our prized play- maker was badly injured was not pretty. You do not need to be a genius to figure our chances of making the eight were dealt a blow by the loss, and that losing Johnson compounds the problem. It was bitterly cold at Manu Vatuvei Stadium and most of us must have trudged out utterly miserable. It was meant to be the big send-off for Manu, and all week we had been hearing about how the players were determined to give the big fellah a send-off marked with two precious points. Bugger. Now coach Stephen Kearney has more on his plate than he can have bargained for, and if he ever thought coaching this mob was going to be a walk in the park, he will have disavowed of that notion by now. Last time we lost Johnson it was a horror show, belted by all and sundry, but this time, cliché or not, the play- ers have to step up.

We are trying to educate our boys that there are three phases to each term: 1. Instructional Phase (Weeks 1- 4): Students learn new work, mostly through direct teaching from our staff. 2. Assignment Phase (Weeks 5 – 7): Assignments are distributed and submitted. Most, but not all subjects would provide some class time to work on these assignments. 3. Exam Phase (Weeks 8 – 10): Revising, cramming and studying for those important tests at the end of each term are a key part of the reports provided to families each year. At present, we are clearly in the assignment phase, which can be a very challenging time each term for students. Things can very quickly “get away from you” if students are not organised during this period. I’ve put together a few quick tips to help support your son through this period. Get serious about assignments – Make no mistake, assignments are a key part of the assessment schedule of Queensland schools, and they are here to stay. An enormous improvement to grades (and confidence) can come about if your son can put some quality work into assignments each term.
