Staff Farewells This Friday we will farewell six staff members who are leaving St Patrick’s College.

Brian (Kiwi) Smith 1998 – 2019 Brian has been teaching since 1987. He has taught in various schools in New Zealand before moving to St Pat’s in July 1998. During his time at the College, Brian has taught Religion & Ethics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Over his long and distinguished career, he has been generous in helping those around him and has held the position of Head of Science Department.

Brian has volunteered coaching many St Pat’s soccer and badminton teams over his time at the College. Coming away with some outstanding wins and some challenging defeats. Brian’s love for science and maths subjects have seen him guide students in many competitions like the ANCQ Chemistry and Titration competitions.

Brian is an educator with a deep sense of commitment and dedication to teaching. We thank him for educating students, inspiring other teachers and his dedication to the St Patrick’s College community. Brian is moving to start a new chapter in his life with his lovely wife in Hervey Bay. We wish them all the best.

Debbie Harding 2002 – 2019 Debbie commenced working at the College in the role of College Receptionist. She then moved in 2008 to an administration assistant position, student data capture / student management for QCAA. Debbie quickly became a wizard in this area and her knowledge and professionalism will be greatly missed from the office area.

Debbie is invaluable with her assistance and organisation with our cultural and sports awards nights. She compiles the invitations, awards, certificates and programs with little fuss. Her attention to detail and flare for style, ensures these events are a great success. Other activities she was called upon to assist with included the debutante Ball, booklets for various church services and printing mass programs. We wish Debbie all the best for the future.

Debbie as you leave us, we thank you for your dedication and professionalism throughout the years in so many ways. We thank you for your gentle and caring nature towards students and staff. We wish you all the best in your retirement, but we won’t let you get away too easily and we will call on you to come back and help us with relief in the office.

Page | 5 Kerry Braby 2007 - 2019 Kerry commenced working at St Patrick’s College Mackay as a Home Ec teacher and Head of Department in 2007. In 2008, she joined the Welfare Team as a Year Coordinator and has maintained this role since. Kerry became a QCAA Review panellist for Home Ec in 2008 and then stepped up to the position of District Review Panel Chair in 2012 today.

Kerry is a dedicated and caring teacher, who relates well with our students. Her passion for teaching was recognised in 2018 when she received an Excellence in Teaching Award from the Home Ec Institute of Australia.

Kerry is retiring from full-time teaching, but will still work as a relief teacher and intends to start her own small sewing business from home. She leaves St Patrick’s College after a peerless career of dedication to Catholic education has made an indelible mark on all who she has taught, worked with and led. St Patrick’s College staff are humbled and deeply honoured to have served alongside her.

Anthony Quartly 2010 – 2019 Tony commenced teaching at St Patrick’s College Mackay in 2010. During his time at the College, he has taught Mathematics, Biology, Science 21 and Chemistry. He has volunteered with tutoring for many of these subjects and has a caring and giving nature with students.

During his time at the College, Tony has inspired many students in science subjects and encouraged them to learn and love careers in this field. He has left a lasting impression on many students and staff and will be missed by our St Pat’s community. We wish him well in his future endeavours.

Sarah Rozekrans 2014 – 2019 Sarah joined the St Pat’s community in 2014 as the Cultural Department Coordinator. Her love and passion for music is evident and her musical abilities are amazing. Sarah has given her time generously with musicals, eisteddfods, community performances, cultural functions, liturgies and Masses. She has inspired many musicians and her performances have left staff and students spell bound.

Sarah is leaving the College to spend more time with her family and to allow her to dedicate more of her time to the musical community of Mackay. Our loss is their gain. However, we know that she will always play an important part in our Cultural Department, volunteering with our students and accompanying them at our various performances.

John Clarke 2016 – 2019 John has worked at St Pat’s filling contracts on a number of occasions since 2009. In 2016, he came on board with a permanent teaching position. During this time, he has taught Mathematics A, B, C and Prevocational Maths. During his teaching career, John has held the positions of Head of Department for Mathematics and District Panel Chair for Mathematics C.

John is an outstanding maths teacher who has left a lasting impression on the students he has taught. Past students often ask after him, as they remember him and the influence he had on their lives.

John is a leader in his field and an educator with a deep sense of commitment to teaching. We thank him for educating students, inspiring other teachers and his dedication to the St Patrick’s College community. We wish him all the best in his retirement, and hope the weather is good to him for his many days on the golf course.

Page | 6 St Patrick’s College Board – Mrs Danielle Bankie (Chair) I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the 2019 St Patrick’s College Board for their time, input and valuable insight. To the outgoing student members: Zodie Bolic, Bridie Fenech, Michael Manera and Cameron Wegner - thank you for taking the time out of your very busy final year of schooling and all the best for your next chapter.

I encourage all parents and Year 12 students attending St Patrick’s College in 2020, to consider being involved in either the Parents and Friends Association or the College Board. It has been very rewarding and such a privilege to have had the opportunity to experience a ‘Board’s eye view’ into what it takes to provide the best possible environment for young adults to learn and grow. So, from me, a huge thank you to all the dedicated and professional staff for your efforts in 2019.

Finally, I’m sure all College families would like to join me in thanking Janelle for her dedicated student focused leadership and support as Principal. Her energy and passion for the students, and our community will see the St Patrick’s College journey towards continuous improvement in good stead for the years ahead.

As the Christmas season approaches, may we all remember the Christmas message - that our most important presents are our family and friends, the peaceful life we lead in Australia and the many blessings we have in this land of freedom and liberty.

Thanks to all of our College community for another wonderful year - may you all enjoy a blessed and peaceful

Christmas time with those you hold dearest. Every blessing and best wish for the New Year in 2020. May we all return to the College in 2020 for another year of challenging education and exciting experiences.

St Patrick’s Parish invites you to celebrate with Bishop Michael at the 6:00pm mass on Sunday 8 December. At this mass:

 Bishop Michael will accept Ashwin Acharya as a candidate for Holy Orders  As a community we will farewell Ashwin as he completes his Pastoral year with us

Then the members of the combined Parish Pastoral Council of St Mary’s, St Francis Xavier and St Patrick’s invite you to continue the celebration in the grounds of St Patrick’s College beside the church, where drinks and cheese will be served as St Patrick's bell rings out a Carillon Concert for the Advent season.

Christmas As with every passing year, we have come to the end of this year and we wonder where the time has gone. This year has been very busy and with all of the changes that have occurred, January 2019 seems so long ago and January 2020 seems so close. It will not be long and it will be Christmas day. I think the Christmas season has to be the best time of the year with everybody looking forward to a rest and celebrating with good cheer. This is the season for catching up with family and friends and enjoying our time together.

Christmas is an important time in the Church calendar; the birth of Jesus represents the birth of new hope. It is a time for us to revisit our faith and consider the gift of the people in our lives. Many of us will be attending Church Services over the Christmas period, encouraging us to remember the Birth of Christ, changing the world forever.

Page | 7 This Christmas, I would like to encourage everybody to remember the true reason of Christmas Day. In the words of Neil Diamond, “Leave a little room for God, You know he won't get in your way” (Neil Diamond, Diamond Songs) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqL1iCZDwaU

I would like to wish everybody a Merry Christmas, and safe and joyous holiday, and hope we can all remember those in our community that need help and support.

Special Report: Surviving Christmas Many people see Christmas as a wonderful time of celebration and an opportunity to spend time with family and friends. However, there are some that view it as a time of stress and hardship. This may be due to a combination of things: financial pressures, relationship issues and, quite often, loneliness, making it a very challenging time.

Often the true meaning of Christmas can be lost due to commercial exploitation, but there are a number of things you can do to create a magical Christmas, without the financial burden. Creating or maintaining traditions can contribute to a sense of comfort and belonging.

Unfortunately, for some, there is also an ugly side to Christmas. Support organisations often report an increase in the number of calls from people seeking help due to their inability to cope during this time. If you, or a loved one, is finding that it is all too much, then it is important to reach out to a trusted friend, family member or medical professional.

In this Special Report, parents and caregivers will be presented with a number of ideas on how to achieve a stress-free Christmas and where to seek help should they need it. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report and we welcome your feedback. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the College for more information or visit https://stpats.qld.schooltv.me/wellbeing_news/surviving-christmas-au
