McGarry Bursaries Following the Mass, we presented the McGarry Bursaries. A bequest by the late Miss Joan McGarry has established perpetual bursaries to be presented each year to St Patrick’s College students. The trust is established in honour of Miss McGarry’s parents, the late Fred and Rose McGarry and her brother, the late Jim McGarry. As per the guidelines of the bequest, bursaries were awarded in the areas of Academic Achievement, Sporting and Cultural Excellence and Social Justice. As well, in recognition of Joan McGarry’s lifelong dedication to her profession of nursing, the student with the highest OP entering Nursing also receives a bursary. The intention of the bequest is that students receive the bursary once properly enrolled in a tertiary course after Year 12, with study to commence in the year of the bequest. These bursaries are not about money – although the money is substantial – the bursaries are about a gift to the future, a belief in young people, a hope to make things better for young people. An extraordinary gift to our whole community. Every year when we celebrate these bursaries, it is important that we reflect on the fact that we have a debt of gratitude and a responsibility to all those who have gone before us at St Patrick’s. There is a proud tradition of spreading and sharing the good news at this college and we become part of that tradition and we continue to create that tradition this year. It was wonderful to see the McGarry Bursary recipients so excited as they were all about to embark on studies for their various careers. This year saw $25,000 available to be distributed to successful students. The amount available for bursaries is advised to the College by Perpetual Trustees, who are the trustees of Joan McGarry’s estate. Bursaries are awarded according to a formula devised by the College Board in 2009 to meet the available money and number of eligible recipients each year. We also acknowledge the Bindal and Wulgurukaba People as the traditional custodians of the Townsville region and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the living Bindal and Wulgurukaba People today. Welcome to all members of our College community to Term 3. In real life it’s not what a person says that shows us who they are; it’s what they do. There is no better example of this with the life of Nelson Mandela. Last Wednesday was Nelson Mandela Day. This day is observed on Mandela’s birthday and was created to honour his legacy by promoting community service around the world. It was first observed on 18 July 2009 and, later that year, the United Nations declared that the day would be observed annually as Nelson Mandela International Day. Mandela Day calls on us all, every day, to make the world a better place. Each year on 18 July we look back on what has been done and forward to what will be done. Making every day a Mandela Day celebrates Madiba’s life and legacy in a sustainable way that will bring about enduring change.

Sir Peter Leitch Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 18th July 2017 Newsletter #179 Saying Goodbye to The Beast Photos courtesy of www.photosport.nz Bugger By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan OMETIMES I think we are cursed. If it would not for bad luck we wouldn’t have any kind at all. SWatching Shaun Johnson limp off was almost a bad as it gets. I say almost, because we then slumped from 22-18 up to get shellacked 34-22. But it all had such a horrible feeling of seen it all before, and what came after the last time our prized play- maker was badly injured was not pretty. You do not need to be a genius to figure our chances of making the eight were dealt a blow by the loss, and that losing Johnson compounds the problem. It was bitterly cold at Manu Vatuvei Stadium and most of us must have trudged out utterly miserable. It was meant to be the big send-off for Manu, and all week we had been hearing about how the players were determined to give the big fellah a send-off marked with two precious points. Bugger. Now coach Stephen Kearney has more on his plate than he can have bargained for, and if he ever thought coaching this mob was going to be a walk in the park, he will have disavowed of that notion by now. Last time we lost Johnson it was a horror show, belted by all and sundry, but this time, cliché or not, the play- ers have to step up.
