Location: The O’Reilly’s end of Lamington National Park – above Canungra. Web: https://www.aussiebushwalking.com/qld/lamington/pats-bluff Emergency Officer: Sue Murray Ph: 0420 510 214.

There will be lots of nice views along the way today. The walk is about 16km and is mainly along graded track with only a bit of “off track” walking.

The walk is a circuit starting and finishing at O’Reilly’s. Initially we will walk past the accommodation units at O’Reilly’s. The party will then descend to Moran’s Creek via the Wishing Tree Track. Then to Balancing Rock and back to Moran’s Falls. Now the group will go up to O’Reilly’s Road, and out to Python Rock, then a quick out & back to Pat’s Bluff. After this, you go down to the Creek near Bridal Veil Falls, and up to Luke’s Bluff, then back to O’Reilly’s.

The walk traverses several types of forest from rainforest, to dry woodland and montane heath and across a few cow paddocks, but we get great views of the Scenic Rim from the paddocks.

Bring the usual daywalk gear. Ensure you bring raingear - a raincoat or an umbrella. You should apply insect repellent. Also, please bring a change of clothes and shoes for the end of the trip and a ride home.

However, there will be a lot of open grass to spread out on, play games, eat lamingtons and macadamia cookies, violet crumble bars, pavlova, even the mighty Vegemite sandwich.

Anyone got a cricket bat, ball and stumps? Bring them along.

Pack you Oz food treats and goodies. Wear a brazenly Oz hat. Bring a thermos of hot water. Chair. Mug. Blanket. Hat. Camera. All the paraphernalia needed for a Picnic In The Park. Remember, there is a BBQ to cook your bacon and egg breakfast.

WEDNESDAY 27 th JANUARY WHITTON CREEK STROLL

Leader: Greg Endicott Ph: 3351 4092. Meet at: Green Hill Reservoir; Russell Tce, Chapel Hill; cnr Chapel Hill Rd. Time: 3:45pm. Bus Stop: Stops at Burbong St at Burbong West, Chapel Hill; Stop ID: 004612 Near Robyn St. Buses: 425; P426 – Arr 3.30pm with a 15min walk to the Reservoir. Cost: Free. Grading: S22. Distance: 9km. Duration: 2½hr. Location: Western Suburbs in Chapel Hill, in the foothills of Mt Coot-tha. End: Chelmer Rail Station OR Bus Station at the Indo Shopping Centre. Emergency Officer: Greg Ph: 0418 122 995. Bring this number with you.

We will be continuing our Creek Series of Strolls – there are plenty more of them where this one came from.

This Creek starts on Mt Coot-tha in some unidentifiable gullies that come off the Chapel Hill Road Trail that leads to The Summit. We will cut into them near the bottom of the Mount, after circumnavigating the water tank and climbing to the lookout at it’s top. Then, once in the forest for only a short time, you will hit a forgotten part of suburbia. The creek goes under the Western Freeway where we cannot follow it – must do a big deviation to join up with it on the other side of the bitumen,

Form here, you will follow paths within sight of the water, just not beside The Creek. Once you cross Moggill Rd, the creek is behind businesses and housing – not much chance to see it till it crosses a road or two.

Finally, it enters the near the Indooroopilly Bridge, which you will cross so you can finish at Chelmer Station. (Bus people can finish at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre Bus Station.

Come along to enjoy this little creek that no one knew existed till I stumbled on it when looking at the map.

SATURDAY 30 th JANUARY OBI OBI CREEK LILO TRIP DAYWALK

Leader: Phil Murray Ph: 5522 9702 or 0416 650 160 or [email protected] Meet at: St Brigid’s Carpark. Time: 6.30am. Cost: $20. Distance: 12km. Location: Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Grade: M66. Emergency Officer: Sue Murray Ph: 5522 9702.

The Obi Obi lilo outing is a classic trip. The date we go out is usually dependent on the rains. In 2019 we went on 24 th March. The trip is rain dependent and hopefully we will go again on 30 th January.

It is just such fun paddling down through the Narrows gorge. Last time we did it we only went halfway down which made it a much shorter trip. Hopefully, we can do the full trip which is about 11km and we spend about 10km in the water. It takes about 4 to 6 hours. There are about 12 long pools of water joined by zippy stretches of moving water. Some are wonderful mini-waterfalls and sometimes they are babbling brooks that bounce along under the overhanging rainforest.

January 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 9

Bring a lilo, wear thermals for sun protection and bring some food for a great day out. Bring either a dry bag (cost about $40) or 3 garbage bags to use as waterproof bags to go inside your pack. I highly recommend wearing Dunlop volleys as footwear and garden gloves for your hands as your hands get very soft after a few hours in the water.

The trip is great fun but it has a serious element of risk and you need to be aware of the danger as we will be in moving water and there is a risk of drowning. Yep, it can be very serious. Anyhow, it is a trip for the young at heart and the adventurous. Phil.

SATURDAY 30 th JANUARY MOUNTS GLORIOUS AND NEBO DAYWALK

Leader: Russ Nelson Ph: 0427 743 534. Meet at: St Brigid’s, Red Hill. Time: 7.00am. Cost: $15.00. Grade: L33…about 20kms. Emergency Officer: Joe Tottenham Ph: 0423 469 704.

This walk in D’Aguilar National Park begins at Maiala near Mt Glorious. From there we will head out to Green Falls. Then we will drive south to Manoorina where we will walk to Mt Nebo Lookout. Next we drive south, after lunch, to Mt Nebo and at the village we will do a car shuffle to Jolly’s Lookout. We will then walk from Boombana near Mt Nebo to Jolly’s Lookout. The walking on this trip is gentle with no steep climbs. On arrival at Jolly’s Lookout we will have afternoon tea and watch the change in colours in the Samford Valley. So bring a cup and your afternoon tea.

WEDNESDAY 3rd FEBRUARY Honeyeater Track (Mt Coot-tha to Kenmore and beyond) STROLL

Leader: Russ Nelson 0427 743 534. Meet at: Summit Café, Mt Coot-tha. Time: 4.15pm. Cost: Free but bring your Go Card. Grade: S33…about 9 kms. Location: Western slopes of Mt Coot-tha. Emergency Officer: Greg Endicott 0418 122 995.

Joining Instructions

It is assumed that you are at the Baroona Shops, on Baroona Road, Milton within sight of Milton Railway Station. Park your car at the shops and catch the bus. If you use public transport, either catch the train to Milton or catch the 471 bus from Broadway in Adelaide St at 3.35pm.

If you are joining at Baroona Shops, catch the 471 bus at 3.43pm and proceed to Summit Café, Mt Coot-tha.

The Stroll Itself

This Stroll will gently descend Mt Coot-tha via the Honeyeater Track to Chapel Hill and we will pick up Cubberla Creek and walk down to Kenmore at Moggill Road. So you will enjoy the bush and creek lands. On reaching Moggill Road we will follow the Creek downstream and go under the Western Freeway and across park land. From there we will walk towards Ambrose Treacy College at Indooroopilly. The Stroll will end at Indooroopilly Railway Station. There we can head home directly or return to the start by catching a train to Milton Railway Station. As always, bring your torch.

THURSDAY 4 th FEBRUARY CABBAGE TREE CREEK DAYWALK

Leader: Greg Endicott Ph: 3351 4092. Meet at: Ferny Grove Rail Station, 1348 Samford Road. Time: 8.30am. Cost: $2. Grading: L22. Distance: 19km. Duration: 6hrs including breaks, lunch and photo stops. Location: North-Western Suburbs – Ferny Hills, Arana Hills, McDowall, Aspley. Map: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=14/-27.3857/152.9476 Emergency Officer: Greg Ph 0418 122 995. Bring this number with you.

You have done this daywalk as two strolls – now I am combining them into one longer walk. You will start at Ferny Grove Railway Station – in the forecourt near the ticket office, and end at the old Aspley Hypermarket, cnr Gympie and Albany Creek Rds (where there is a bus station taking you to almost anywhere.

The first part is along a fire trail through the Samford Sate Forest to the tip of the ridge – a climb of 90m along a dirt road, and then a drop down into THE Creek. From here, it is downhill all the way – water does not flow uphill, does it. In fact, you will end up at 20m above sea level – that is a looong drop from 150m.

Once in the creek valley, you basically stay with it all the way – travelling along a continuous path most of the way – there is a little suburban walking when the concrete path ceases because the Council or developer have not put one in yet.

Most of the day you will be in our native green bush surrounded by ore lovely furry or feathered native wildlife, There will be big trees, thick shrubs, lovely grasses, rhythmical water flowing over rocks and slabs – what more could you want.

Bring lunch with you, as well as water, rain & sun protection and snacks.

At the end, buses take you further out along Gympie Rd, or into the City, the Chermside Interchange, the Cultural Centre, or to Albany Ck, Everton Hills, Enoggera, & Ashgrove. Or, for a further 2km and 30min, I can lead you to Carseldine Rail Station.

When we did this as a Stroll, it was in drought with little water in the creek and not-so-lush grass and vegetation along the banks. With our current weather pattern, it should be spectacular.

Come with me on this magical tour in our lovely green bush amongst the suburbia you will hardly see on the day.

SUNDAY 7 th FEBRUARY ALBERT RIVER CIRCUIT DAY WALK

Leader: Kylie Moore [email protected] . Meet at: St Brigid’s Carpark. Time: 6.30am. Cost: $25. Location: O’Reillys. Grade: L34, about 20kms. Emergency Officer: Karen Franklin Ph: 0417 718 591.

This circuit, with its numerous names, encompasses both subtropical and temperate rainforest, antarctic beech trees, numerous waterfalls, and spectacular views from lookouts. It is especially beautiful after heavy rain, when the waterfalls are at their best. So we may be lucky with the current weather patterns. The circuit will be done in an anticlockwise direction. We will turn right after about 4.5kms at the first Echo Point/Albert River junction with the Border Track. January 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 11

We now wind our way through rainforest past numerous waterfalls for about 2 hours to Echo Point where will spend a little time enjoying the views west, east and south. Echo Point is the turn off to follow the McPherson Range to its junction with the Great Dividing Range at Wilson’s Peak.

We now follow the escarpment for about 30/45 minutes back to the Border Track. We now retrace our steps for an hour or so downhill back to the carpark.

This is not a difficult walk but is a long walk at approximately 20kms. So come prepared to be thrilled by nature. We will stop at Canungra for a welcome cold drink before heading home.

WEDNESDAY 10 th FEBRUARY CAVENDISH ROAD TO GRIFFITH UNI STROLL

Leader: Greg Endicott Ph: 3351 4092. Meet at: Cavendish Rd at Mt Gravatt TAFE, Stop 55; Stop ID: 006425. Time: 4pm. Cost: Free. Grading: S22. Distance: 7km. Duration: 2hrs. Height Gain/Loss: 55m/60m. Location: Southern Suburbs: Mt Gravatt East, Mt Thompson, Mt Gravatt Central, Griffith Uni Mt Gravatt Campus. Map: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/-27.5346/153.0695 Emergency Officer: Greg Ph 0418 122 995. Bring this number with you.

You have done this daywalk as parts of other Strolls – now I am combining them into one. You will start near where some of the White’s Hill Strolls normally commence, near the corner of Camlet St and outside the TAFE College.

From here, you will follow Camlet St, taking a loopy deviation to see the shops, past Chester Park Reserve, duck up Panorama Pl just for old times’ sake, and then go down to Logan Rd. During all this, you shall be walking past some lovely houses built in the 1980’s – in their day they were mansions.

Once across Logan Rd, the party will skirt Mt Gravatt proper and Stroll amongst the foothills. You will go up Mountain St to view some classy houses on the side of the hill and they have classic views over the city. After this, the party drops down, winding around older streets to find our way to Griffith Uni and the Busway Station to take us back to the City and home.

Come along for this surprisingly short, did I say short, Stroll.

SATURDAY 13 th FEBRUARY STAIRWAY FALLS DAYWALK

Leader: John Carter Ph: 0433 279 771. Meet: St Brigid’s, 78 Musgrave Rd, Red Hill. Time: 6.00 am. Cost: $25.00. Grade: M55. Emerg Off: TBA.

Stairway Fall is located on West Canungra Creek and is downstream of the formed walking track network. It is off the road to Green Mountains, Lamington NP. The daywalk is a mostly off track and a creek walk down to the Falls.

We will descend into the valley via the steep Bull Ant Spur (near Duck Creek Road) and more than likely return the same way. This route leads to Yerralahla (Blue Pool). Then it is downstream following the creek and crossing it several times. There will be some rock hopping. With recent rains, water levels January 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 12 may be higher. There is evidence of the old graded track along the way. There is a large pool at the base of Stairway Falls and is a nice swimming spot.

Overall walk distance is about 8-9 kms. With a minimum height gain of over 425 metres on the return. Be prepared for leeches & damp conditions. An option is to return via the walking track from Blue Pool to the day use area.

MONDAY 15 th FEBRUARY MONTHLY MEETING & AGM

Contact: Russ Nelson Ph: 0427 743 534 Time: 7.30pm – Doors open & meeting starts soon after. Where: St Michael’s Parish Hall, 250 Banks St, Dorrington (in the lower carpark behind the church. Drive down the ramp at the left.) Web: http://www.bcbc.bwq.org.au/page4.html

We need a quorum for the AGM to be held. A quorum is 11 members – so come along and help make up the quorum and ensure that the AGM can proceed.

The business conducted will include: • Receive the Committee’s Report, • Receive the Statement of Income & Expenditure, Assets & Liabilities, for the year 2020; • Receive the Auditor’s Report; • Election of Committee for 2021; • The appointment of the 2021 Auditor; • Voting of Honorary Members;

All persons are welcome to attend – Do NOT be put off – you are getting two (2) meetings for the price of one.

Members should attend to carry out their democratic right of questioning, in a civilised and polite manner, the outgoing committee about the running of the Club during 2020, and to vote in the new committee. It works better if we have more than the usual number of members present.

As soon as the AGM is completed, the normal February Monthly Meeting will commence under the command of the new committee.

Visitors will find it a bit slow, but will see the Club in operation. Also, the regular monthly meeting is on afterwards, so Visitors can ask leaders about their coming trips.

WEDNESDAY 17 th FEBRUARY ROMA STREET TO INDOOROOPILLY RAIL #1 STROLL

Leader: Greg Endicott Ph: 3351 4092. Meet at: Outside Roam Street Station in Roma Street. Time: 3.30pm. Cost: Free. Grading: M11. Distance: 10km. Duration: 2½hrs. Location: Northern Suburbs: CBD, Milton, Auchenflower, Taringa, Indooroopilly. Map: https://www.google.com/maps/@-27.4810862,152.9795227,15z Emerg Off: Greg Ph 0418 122 995. Bring this number with you.

We are beginning a new series of Strolls – following the railway lines from Roma Street Station to their outer suburban ends. Here is the first – the Western Line.

January 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 13

You begin at the beginning, a very good place to start. You cannot follow the line religiously; that is not the aim, the purpose is to see what you see from the train. After following Milton Road, you follow the train line through Auchenflower to Toowong. Then the path takes us through the back streets to Taringa Station, and continuing on the wrong side of the tracks to Indooroopilly. From here, catch a train or bus to home.

Our group will be essentially on footpaths in suburban areas and a few bike tracks.

Come along with me on this inaugural Stroll – be part of history.

SATURDAY 20 th FEBRUARY ANNUAL MASS AND LUNCH

Leader: Liz Little Ph: 0414 252 003 [email protected] Meet: St Ita’s, 247 Gladstone Road, Dutton Park / Yeronga Services Club, cnr Fairfield Rd and Kadumba St, Yeronga. Time: Mass 11.00 am / Lunch 12 Noon. Cost: Pay for lunch and drinks upon ordering.

The Annual Mass is a significant gathering of our Club community. It presents an opportunity to reflect upon what we do and who we are. It is a time to celebrate the beauty of creation and the precious gift of friendship. It is also the time when we give thanks for the past year of bushwalking and anticipate the upcoming programme.

To drive to the lunch venue from the church, turn right into Gladstone Rd. After one kilometre, turn right into Noble St which becomes Fairfield Rd. After two kilometres, turn right into Kadumba St and immediately right into the car park of the Club.

There are also trains and buses from Dutton Park to Yeronga. Consult the Translink website. At the Yeronga Services Club, most of the meals are $20 or less. There are also specials for $15 or $12-for-members or $10- for-Seniors. It is possible to become a member for $2 at the Club’s Reception or online at https://yerongaservices.com.au/ .

Nominations for the lunch are essential. If you are willing to read or play a non-speaking role at the Mass, please advise Liz.

SATURDAY 21 st FEBRUARY TOOLONA CREEK CIRCUIT DAYWALK

Leader: Phil Murray 0416 650160. Meet: St Brigid’s 78 Musgrave Road, Red Hill. Time: 6.30 am. Cost: $25. Grade: L35. Emergency Officer: Sue Murray 5522 9702.

The walk is long at 18.5 km but is entirely along graded track. But I should mention that there are a few creek crossings but usually they are not too difficult.

We will be descending to Picnic Rock and then visiting Elabana Falls. Then up along Toolona Creek and on to Wanungra Lookout on the Border Track. There is some gentle uphill walking from Toolona Creek to Wanungra Lookout which may be a bit onerous if you haven’t being working on your fitness. We turn left here and walk about 100 metres to Wanungra Lookout where we will have lunch. There should be views of Mt Warning from here. We will then return to O’Reilly’s along the Border Track. The trip has being done several times over the years but it is always a great walk.

Bring the usual daywalk stuff, plus I suggest you bring at least 3 litres of water as it will probably be warmish. Ensure you bring raingear namely a raincoat or an umbrella. Ensure you apply insect repellent. Also, please ensure you have a change of clothes and shoes for the end of the trip. I recommend you bring a thermos of cold water for the end of the walk to be left in the car.

Make sure you bring a mug to have a cup of tea to have with your Lamington cake at lunch time. January 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 14

The track is closed at the moment but is expected to be re-opened by the time the walk is scheduled to go out.

WEDNESDAY 24 th FEBRUARY DOWNFALL CREEK #2 MAUNDRELL TERRACE TO GEEBUNG STROLL

Leader: Greg Endicott Ph: 3351 4092. Meet at: Whites St at Kenna Street, Stop 46; Chermside West. Time: 3.40pm. Cost: Free. Grading: S11. Distance: 9km. Bus: 345 Aspley leaves Elizabeth Street Stop 87 near Edward St, at 2.45pm. Duration: 2½hrs. Location: Northern Suburbs: West Chermside, Cragislea, Chermside, Aspley, Geebung. Map: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/-27.3756/153.0289 Emergency Officer: Greg Ph 0418 122 995. Bring this number with you.

You have followed Downfall Creek twice already, and now for #3 from a completely different angle. This is a minor tributary that is now covered by houses, so you will be having fun trying to see where it goes.

We begin our chase behind St Gerard Majella Church and meander through nice old suburbs to Chermside, then deviate at Marchant Park heading north into Aspley to find another tributary so as not to follow our previous path to Geebung.

Come along on this sedate Stroll through our suburban backblocks and forgotten streets for another satisfying adventure.

SATURDAY 27 th FEBRUARY NOOSA NATIONAL PARK DAY WALK

Leader: Michele Johns 0414 635 542. Meet at: St Brigid's Car Park, Red Hill. Time: 7.00am. Cost: $25 (car pool), $2 (private). Grading: M34. Location: Noosa National Park. Emergency Officer: Richard Johns 0409 871 641.

Put this walk on your to do walks for 2021 and join me as we explore what this iconic part of has to offer. This walk offers a diverse range of flora ranging from open eucalypt woodland and shrub land to coastal heathland. The coastal stretch on our return has the most spectacular panoramic views with coastal breezes.

We will start by walking the 1.2km stretch from Sunshine Beach and onto Alexandria Bay. The challenge for the day will be 212 steps up to the Headland with spectacular ocean views. A morning tea stop is planned at the northern end of Alexandria Bay and an optional swim.

From Alexandria Bay a short track connects with the Tanglewood Track and onto Noosa Hill.

The views from Noosa Hill are limited but still worth it for the diversity of flora passed along the way.

From here it is a short stroll back to the Coastal Track and onto Tea Tree Bay for a lunch stop and optional swim. We will now follow the Coastal Track.

There are several photo opportunities along the way, and we might even spot a koala.

January 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 15

The walk is relatively easy with gentle slopes and should be attainable by most. There are a couple of seats along the way to take in the spectacular views. All up it is expected that we will walk about 12 – 14 kms.

Be sure to pack the usual day gear as well as your swimmers.

EUROPEAN MASTERPIECES From The Metropolitan Museum Of Art, New York Goma | Gallery 1.1 The Fairfax Gallery, Gallery 1.2, Gallery 1.3 Eric & Marion Taylor Gallery | Ticketed

Spanning 500 years, ‘European Masterpieces from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York’ offers a breath-taking journey from the 1420s and emerging Renaissance to conclude at the height of early twentieth century post-impressionism.

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity allows visitors to experience works by painters such as Fra Angelico, Titian, Raphael, Rembrandt, Turner, Van Gogh and Monet, direct from The Met’s collection – one of the finest collections of European painting in the world, the majority of which rarely leave permanent display in New York.

Highlights of the exhibition include Fra Angelico’s finely painted altarpiece The Crucifixion of ca. 1420–23; Titian’s poetic Venus and Adonis of the 1550s; the immediacy and drama of Caravaggio’s The Musicians 1597; Rembrandt’s painterly Flora of c.1654; Vermeer’s beautifully observed Allegory of the Catholic Faith c.1670-72, and van Gogh’s idyllic The Flowering Orchard 1888.

‘European Masterpieces’ includes portraiture, still-life, landscape and figure studies and will be a must-see for audiences of all ages, art-lovers and anyone with an interest in history, society, beauty, religious iconography, mythology and symbolism.

This Australian-exclusive exhibition is organised by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in collaboration with the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art and Art Exhibitions Australia.

This will be a very popular exhibition, so you should book earlier rather than closer to the date. This is the last day of the Exhibition – so all the latecomers will be trying to get is at the last moment. Better if you book soon at: https://qagoma.qtix.com.au/eventseatblockprices.aspx

See you there in October with us.

ELECTION TIME

We will be having our AGM in February, and part of this is THE Elections. You all should start thinking of nominating for Committee, and to nominate someone else for a position. It takes a little bit of time to come to the realisation you can make a difference to the Club by being part of the management team.

The forms are in this Jilalan, the January Edition – they are already on the Club website.

SUBS ARE DUE

Your 2021 Membership Subscription were due on 1 st January. There is a discount for early payment.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Despite the disruption caused by Covid-19 throughout 2020, the Club has continued to thrive, with good numbers of members and visitors attending walks, strolls and socials. To ensure the continued viability of the Club, it is essential that the Committee positions be filled. Over the last two years less than 50% of the positions have been filled. Some of those who have been serving on Committee have advised they will not be standing for re-election at the Annual General Meeting in February.

Please give serious consideration to nominating for a position on Committee. Our constitution provides nine positions on the Committee, namely President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Outings Secretary, Social Secretary, Editor, Safety & Training Officer and Membership Officer. For the Club to be effective in the future, we need people to volunteer to the leadership function of the Club. Which Committee role will you nominate to undertake? Russ Nelson.

Leader’s Needed for Walks in 2020 Sun 22 Mar Club Hut Daywalk

Wet weather blast & Storm Damage Last month I commented on the very hot November weather and then the following month we had a huge amount of rain with lots of track damage up at Lamington and Springbrook. Gold Coast had 300 mm of rain whereas the long term average is 129 mm. Cairns and Townsville are about to be hit by ex- tropical cyclone Imogen and hopefully the flooding rains are not as bad as the media are predicting. The one good thing about the rain was that the serious fires on Fraser Island have been extinguished. Of note is that the Warrie Circuit on 2 Jan walk was changed to the Daves Creek walk up at Binna Burra. The initial forecast for the Daves creek walk was for showers but the trip was completed without any January 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 18 rain. There is still plenty of rain about but the mere forecast of rain or showers shouldn’t prevent a trip going out.

Planning for 2021 The program for 2021 is finalised, sort of, as soon as we publish the program things happen; for example the storm damage to the tracks up at Lamington and Springbrook required several amendments. The Outings program is basically settled but of course there will be a few minor changes to cater for weather and leaders becoming unavailable. There is also of course the potential problem of Covid which may require we make alterations but hopefully the new vaccine will put a lid on any future surges in number of cases. Keen eyed observers will notice that there is a trip scheduled to Cape Byron (NSW) in late March and hopefully the border restrictions will be lifted by then.

Wollangambe Canyon. Usually Wollanngambe is a very placid place but the recent news of a tragedy where 2 people were killed in the water flow is a reminder that we will need to be ever vigilant when bushwalking and doing lilo trips. Our sympathies are extended to the families of the 2 walkers. An update is on the ABC website – https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-01-03/nsw-police-resume-search-for-missing-canyoners-blue- mountains/13028364

By way of background over the last 30 years I have done about 30 bushwalks with the Sydney Catholic Bushwalking Club and about 8 of them have been lilo trips to Wollangambe Canyon. This canyon is located about 30 kilometres north of Katoomba as the crow flies. The Wollangambe canyon is a series of box canyons carved into the sandstone plateau with a series of long pools with short portages. It is a must do experience for any self-respecting bushwalker.

The above photo of a lilo trip on the Wollangambe is from the David Noble Blog. http://www.david- noble.net/blog/?p=702 Of note is the link between David Noble and the Wollemi pine. In particular, the Wollemi Pine was discovered by David Noble in 1994 and he was given special recognition in the scientific name of the species as Wollemia nobilis (to state the obvious nobilis is the latin form of noble).

Go on a throughwalk in 2021 Last year the Club had no throughwalks go out due to the problems caused by Covid. It used to be said that the real spirit of bushwalking can best be found on multi day trips (or throughwalks as they are called in our Club and other Clubs in but the term is not used in Sydney or Melbourne). Hopefully in 2021 we can inspire old and new members to join us on a throughwalk at least once in 2021. The walks aren’t easy but always very memorable and what bushwalking is about. Throughwalks in cricket parlance are like test matches and daywalks are equivalent to 20/20 games.

The throughwalks planned for 2021 are as follows. DATE DESCRIPTION LEADER 22-23 May Rat-a-Tat TW Khaleel Petrus 25 26 27 June Glen Rock Iain Renton 24-25 July Mt Ballow area Matthew P 28- 29-Aug Blue Mountains TW Phil Murray 30 Oct to 2 Nov Vic Alps Mt Feathertop, Mt Bogong & others Phil Murray

Do yourself a favour and savour the delights of a throughwalk in 2021.

Next month a quick update on the basecamps and overnighters for 2021. January 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 19

“Walking Quotes” for the month

“Chasing angels or fleeing demons, go to the mountains.” Jeffrey Rasley

“It’s always further than it looks. It’s always taller than it looks. And it’s always harder than it looks.” (the three rules of mountaineering)

“Never measure the height of a mountain until you have reached the top.” Dag Hammarskjold

I hope to see you on the track, soon. Phil, Outings Secretary

PAST EVENTS

CHRISTMAS PARTY SATURDAY 19 th DECEMBER SOCIAL

A new Christmas Party format was tried in this pandemic year – at the Indooroopilly Hotel. We ended up having our own little private area adjacent to the Bistro, with three large tables to accommodate the 23 members who attended – and we were given a bar tab to make up for not having the original reception room we’d booked; that was excellent compensation, which we all enjoyed throughout the evening! January 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 20

There were three dinner options – beef, pork and fish – and all three were delicious. There was no loud background music, so we were able to talk to each other throughout the evening and share our plans for Christmas.

Russ once again tested our knowledge with a fun, but challenging, quiz that he’d prepared and printed off for us; and the victors were Jan and friends, who kindly shared their chocolate Favourites prize with us all. Thanks, ladies – and thanks, Russ, for being our quizmaster once again.

Thanks to Andrea T and Michele J for taking the nominations and doing the original negotiations with the pub re: our menu. Those who supported this new-style Christmas Party were: Sofia R; Sue W; Graham G; Lorraine N; John B; Antonia S; Susan T; Liz L; Paddy T; Kahlil P; Maria K; Janet G; Terri E; Russ & Jan N; Wayne & Jenny B; Rusty & Louise J; Benno & Michelle G; and Greg & Michele E.

ANNUAL PHOTO COMP

After our December meeting, we held the Annual Photo Competition.

The rules are too long to list here: they are in your last Jilalan.

The categories of the competition were –

1. Landscape - this includes all the landscapes, waterscapes, mountains, 2. Moods of nature - sunrises, sunsets, storm and rain or misty days, 3. Nature Close up - plants, animals, birds, rocks, leaf litter etc., 4. People and faces - portraiture & club character, 5. Miscellaneous - any photos that do not fit into any other category, 6. Best overall - awarded to the print deemed to be best overall by the invited judge, 7. People’s choice - the best photo selected by the members.

I must begin by saying that we had the greatest number of entrants and of entries for a great number of years. The competition was fierce. This year, the display tables were covered in photos – very encouraging to see this. It will entice more members to submit entries at the end of this year when we hole the next competition.

I know you are waiting with bated breath to hear who the winners are. 1. Landscape – Nippers in Beauty by Paulette Schmidt 2. Moods of Nature – Pat’s Bluff by Liz Little 3. Nature Close-Up – White Rock by Louise Jones 4. People & Faces – Pat and Her New Friend by Sue Walsh 5. Miscellaneous – Glasshouse Mountains by Liz Little 6. Judge’s Choice – Glasshouse Mountains by Liz Little 7. People’s Choice – Pat’s Bluff by Liz Little.

Congratulations to the winners and thank-you to all who submitted entries.

Keep taking those photos on Club events – I hear a rumour that entries this year will be allowed from any Club event – not just Outings. Keep those fingers on the shutter release to capture those exceptional views of us, nature, our beautiful countryside for our viewing pleasure. Bring your shots along to the meetings to share your joy of our pastime. Greg.

COORPAROO FINGER PARKS TO THE CITY SUNDAY 27 th DECEMBER DAYWALK

You will be surprised how much natural bush there still is out in the burbs. We found a lot on this walk. Perhaps, in the old days, some land was too steep or the gully too deep to build on – not today though.

We were surprised by the thickness of the forest and the size of the trees. When we left one of the parks, turn the corner and there is the beginning of the next. Why “finger parks” – they were laid out like the fingers on the palm of your hand – long & narrow and almost parallel.

Some of us arrived in the “Christmas Bus” – the Sherwood Depot’s entry in the Council Decorations Comp. Boy, was it decorated – not a square mm of space left.

January 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 21

The waking commenced when we walked down a few blocks along Cavendish Rs, turning into View Rd. At the end, our first park – caused some dismay with the bank to be descended. All happy at the bottom. Then the party crossed the next road to enter another of the parks – this time more natural than the first. The grass underfoot quickly turned into leaves and mulch. These parks are long, but thin, with the houses backing onto them – not too closely in most places.

Flowers are still out in full bloom – especially the poinciana. We enjoyed seeing the flowering trees and shrubs throughout the day. We zig-zagged our way down and up and down again through these parks.

After doing four of these parks, we finally got into a long forgotten (and piped underground) watercourse which took us through the back areas of Coorparoo to Bridgewater Creek down near Leicester St. Here we found Bowies Flat Wetland on Old Cleveland Rd – a surprise series of ponds full of bird life. We followed this creek all the way to Norman Creek with its brackish water, mangroves and flood plains. Talking of planes, the flight path was right over us for most of the day and they were coming in low – what a great site. Norman Creek was followed downstream to the Norman Park Bowls Club and here we crossed over the new footbridge to East Brisbane for lunch. Time was spent in the shade catching our breath, discussing the meaning of life amongst ourselves and eating a well-earned lunch. After a quick inspection of the Creek, we crossed over Lytton Rd to Mowbray Park for our longest part of the day in suburbia and roads.

Around to Dockside, a walk along the River to check out the parked boats and up to the , Captain Burke Park and around the actual point of Kangaroo Point to the Holman Street Ferry. Crossing the River on a KittyCat, we had an early afternoon tea at the Coffee Club.

The weather was fine and hot, a cool breeze in places and not a sign of rain. Thanks to my fellow Boxing walkers: Michele E, Louise & Rusty Jones, Sofia Ramsay, Jeanette Chew, Terry Silk, Jan & Russ and Benno G. Greg.

DAVES CREEK CIRCUIT SATURDAY 2 nd JANUARY DAYWALK

First walk of the year proved to be a very nice walk, through rainforest and open heathlands with the sound of running water again after a few dry months. With other tracks closed in the Binna Burra section, it was a crowded track with heaps of fallen trees from storm damage.

After leaving the Trailhead, we set off at a good pace to the Coomera Seat before the paths became muddy and we had to walk slower. It was great to hear the creeks flowing again and seeing more waterfalls. We branched off the Border Track to Dave’s Creek Circuit and Shipstern before we arrived at Nagarigoon Falls and then proceeded on to Nagarigoon Clearing for morning tea.

We went back to Dave’s Creek Circuit passing by Nebani Rock and then Surprise Rock, where the tracks were dry once again and the sun was shining. The group climbed up both sides of Surprise Rock to get good photos before we headed to Numinbah Lookout. You could hear the buzz of crickets along the way. We then headed via the ridge passing Picnic Creek to Molongolee Cave, where we had lunch and were rewarded with a beautiful breeze and more water dripping from the rocks above the cave. The view across to the Woggunba Valley provided us with another waterfall in the distance.

It was just after the middle of the day and quite hot and humid when we finished lunch and headed back to the Trailhead at Binna Burra. One visitor in the group spotted a paddy melon and another walker on the track pointed out a small snake to us, but we didn’t see any Lamington Crayfish. A big thank you to Jarrod Sefton, Benno Giuliani, Katrina and Neale Halls for joining me on this walk.

COFFEE NIGHT WEDNESDAY 6 th JANUARY SOCIAL

Twelve members attended this event at Kafe Meze, a cosy Eastern Mediterranean / Greek café. It also turned out to be a train spotters delight as the café overlooked the main western line. This day was very hot and, as sunset approached, so did early evening storms. The storms were late enough to arrive so that all of us arrived in dry weather plus the temperatures had begun to drop dramatically. After glancing at the menu people were asking what all the non-English words meant. Fortunately, the Wait January 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 22 staff came to our assistance. In the end we all enjoyed a taste of eastern Mediterranean food so much that we plan to revisit in 2022. Those enjoying the food were Rusty and Louise Jones, Russ and Jan Nelson, Graham Glasse, Liz Little, Maria Kerruish, Susan Wear, Pat Lawton, Jonas Bernotas, Paddy Taylor and Janet Galos.

NOTICE OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Monday 15 th February 2021 Contact: Russ Nelson 0427 743 534. Location: St Michael’s Hall, 250 Banks St, Dorrington. Time: 7:30pm

We need a quorum for the AGM to be held. A quorum is 11 members – so come along and help make up the quorum and ensure that the AGM can proceed.

The business conducted will include: • Receive the Committee’s Report, • and Statement of Income & Expenditure, Assets & Liabilities, for the year 2020; • Receive the Auditor’s Report; • Election of Committee for 2021; • The appointment of the 2021 Auditor; • Voting of Honorary Members;

All persons are welcome to attend – Do NOT be put off – you are getting 2 meetings for the price of one.

See you all there, Graham Glasse, Club Secretary

If only one person stands for a position by having the fully completed form in the hands of The Secretary by the required date, that person is automatically elected to that position. 16. In recent years, if a position has been left vacant due to no one nominating for it, the Club has allowed any member, regardless of category, to act in the position unofficially without being formally elected. Being in the position unofficially means the person is not actually in the position, thus cannot vote at committee when a vote is necessary.

HOW WE ORGANISE OURSELVES OUTINGS (a) Always read the Jilalan article to check the departure point, date and time. (b) Walk departures are usually from Red Hill Parish Hall, 78 Musgrave Rd. Check “Jilalan” to determine the location to be sure. (c) The Club will usually organise transport for each outing, but you must nominate in advance to the leader. Contacting someone else may lead to your nomination becoming “lost”. Nominations should preferably be made by the Wednesday night prior to the activity so that transport etc. can be arranged. Note that nominations for some walks may close well in advance of this. Late nominations may not be accepted. (d) Walkers are responsible for their own transport to and from the departure point. (e) Walks are rarely cancelled – if they are, all nominees will be notified. Do not presume that outings are cancelled – ie, because of bad weather. (f) Should you change your mind and decide not to come to a Club event, please notify the leader as soon as possible. (g) If you are running late for the departure point, ring the Emergency Officer, or if the leader shows a mobile phone number, phone the leader. All visitors must sign an Assumption of Risk form for insurance purposes.

EMERGENCY OFFICER : If you have not returned from an outing by 9:00pm, your family may ring the Emergency Officer (Or “EO” or “Emerg Off”) for that outing – but please they are not to panic.
