E-mail of corresponding author: [email protected]. Abstract A torsion bar passive suspension is a general term for any vehicle suspension that uses a torsion bar as its main weight bearing spring. The main advantages of a torsion bar passive suspension system are durability, easy adjustability of ride height, and small profile along the width of the vehicle. It takes up less of the vehicle's interior volume than coil springs. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the ride height of a vehicle which adjusted by the torsion bar on the vehicle body vibration in torsion bar passive suspension system. In this work the study, a front suspension of double-wishbone type suspension with upper torsion bar is assigned as quarter car model and is considered for the performance index study. Tire speed, sprung mass weight and presence of the hump are taken into consideration as the operation parameters. The results show the change of the torsion bar bolt position has sufficient effect on the sprung mass acceleration Keywords: vehicle suspension systems, torsion bar, ride comfort. 1. Issue 91 – June, 2010 THE ACHILLES HEEL THAT WASN’T The Silver Shadow as most of us know was the Factory’s first real sortie into the Brave New World. Sales of the staid but beautiful Cloud and ‘S’ series cars were falling through competition from much less expensive vehicles who through the impetus of technical development that was burgeoned by the Second World War were able to offer everything that Rolls-Royce could fit to their cars. The American market was finally recognized as the Company’s salvation. No longer could they rely on beautiful tasteful finishes quiet engines and sumptuous rides to keep the bottom line healthy. The vee eight engine that was jammed into the Cloud chassis greatly improved performance but then they had to have noisier clocks! By then the ancient ‘Jerkomatic’ transmission as it is fondly known in other circles, was retired after some 15 years service to be replaced by the pan-automotive transmission the GM400 a three speed that enjoyed production numbers in the millions; but providing a means of communicating with the unit was a challenge. The transition from a floor mounted change lever for the last of a long line of manual gearboxes to a lever on the steering column was indeed a quantum leak. By then millions of vehicles around the world had, for over half a century got by with a central 1230 change speed lever that was stuffed through the lid of the box and worked very well. One drawback was engaging low gear with a reserved lady in the centre of the front seat which could present some embarrassing situations but they were not a major consideration. -

Incorrect trim heights can cause bottoming out over bumps, damage to the suspension components and symptoms similar to wheel alignment problems. Check the trim heights when diagnosing suspension concerns and before checking the wheel alignment. Perform the following before measuring the trim heights: Make sure the vehicle is on a level surface, such as an alignment rack. Remove the alignment rack floating pins. Set the tire pressures to the pressure shown on the certification label. Refer to Vehicle Certification Label in General Information. Check the fuel level. Add additional weight if necessary to simulate a full tank. To ensure proper weight distribution make sure the rear storage compartment is empty. Close the doors and hood. Z Height Measurement Important: K models only the Z height must be adjusted before the alignment. The Z height dimension measurement determines the proper ride height for the front end of the vehicle. Vehicles equipped with torsion bars use a adjusting arm in order to adjust the Z height dimension. Vehicles without torsion bars have no adjustment and could require replacement of suspension components. Important: All dimensions are measured vertical to ground. Cross vehicle Z heights should be within 12 mm (0.47 in) to be considered correct. 1. Place hand on the front bumper and jounce the front of the vehicle. -

This article will discuss umpire coverage responsibilities at third base in the NYSSO two umpire system. For whatever reason, it seems as if this bit of field coverage produces more problems than any other coverage area. The base umpire provides coverage in certain circumstances, while the plate umpire provides coverage in other circumstances. Initial and Second Play When the ball is hit in the infield the initial play at any base (1st, 2nd, 3rd) is always covered by the base umpire. Example: runners R1 at 1st base and R3 at 3rd base. Ground ball to the second baseman. The base umpire is responsible for the initial play, no matter if the second baseman chooses to throw to 1st, to 2nd, or to 3rd. If, in the above scenario, if R1 proceeds to 3rd, it becomes the plate umpire’s responsibility to cover 3rd: The plate umpire moves up the third base line (in anticipation of a possible play at 3rd). If there is no play then no call. But, if there is a play, the plate umpire should move into fair territory, let his partner know he is there, get into good calling position (at the action edge at 3rd), and make the call. (If the plate umpire does not get up to 3rd, it will be the base umpire’s call, however this should be very rare indeed.) When there are runners R1 on 1st and R2 on 2nd, coverage is very similar. When the initial throw goes to 1st, 2nd, or 3rd it is the base umpire’s call. -
