We serve the largest community food network in the province to alleviate hunger, promote access to nutritious foods, and help support healthier living for Manitobans in need. Harvest Manitoba (“Harvest”) is a charitable organization dedicated to nourishing our Mission communities and our sense of community so that no Manitoban goes hungry. ABOUT THE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER POSITION Reporting to a community-based Board of Directors, the President and Chief Executive Officer leads the implementation of the strategic directions of the organization and oversees all operations, including a complex distribution network. As the face of Harvest Manitoba, the President and Chief Executive Officer will passionately share the mission and vision of the organization, maintain the organization’s positive reputation as a trusted and valuable contributor to the community and encourage the ongoing contributions of time, money and food products. The President and Chief Executive Officer will foster and build on positive relationships with partner agencies, funders, donors, volunteers, clients and the general public and will pro- actively advocate for policies and practices that establish food security. The President and Chief Executive Officer will work with the Board to develop and maintain sound financial, human resource and operational policies aligned with Harvest Manitoba values and strategic directions. They will maintain an environment and culture that promotes compassion, continuous improvement and achievement of results. KEY LEADERSHIP ACCOUNTABILITIES Accountability 1: Strategic Management and Policy and Position Development • Assess organizational and system capacity to deliver on its mission and achieve its vision • Lead the development of the Harvest Manitoba strategic plan • Translate the strategic plan into specific actions and communicate objectives to employees, partners and volunteers • Work with staff in the development of an operational plan and departmental / functional plans aligned with the strategic plan and including objectives, actions and key and operational performance indicators - 2 - Harvest Manitoba President & Chief Executive Officer • Provide advice and guidance to the Board on the development / revision of financial, human resource and operational policies and ensure implementation of and compliance to these policies • Maintain an awareness of changes in local, national, and international contexts that may impact Harvest Manitoba and communicate and/or interpret these effects at both a strategic and operational level • Oversee the development / modification of programs and services and develop a process of reporting progress and results • Identify within a risk management framework, all risks to the organization and develop and implement plans to mitigate these risks Accountability 2: Advocacy and Stakeholder Relationship Management • Work with community agencies, donors, businesses, volunteers and the general public to maximize their financial and volunteer support for Harvest Manitoba programs and services • Develop and implement a pro-active and results-oriented, multi-faceted donation strategy to maximize financial, food and volunteer time commitments • Work closely with the partner agencies to ensure a current and shared understanding of their client needs and to ensure the most efficient and effective distribution systems and processes • Develop and maintain relevant relationships, partners and networks to ensure Harvest Manitoba is a key and highly visible advocate for food security • Ensure the development and implementation of a comprehensive communications plan, including tools, such as the website, social media, and audiovisual and printed material, so that all stakeholders can be aware of and access information about the work of Harvest Manitoba • Direct the efforts of the organization so that goodwill and a positive public image are maintained • Serve as the primary spokesperson for Harvest Manitoba, responding to media and communications needs as required Accountability 3: Organizational Management • Support and maintain a strong, efficient and effective food distribution network • Guide and oversee the large functional warehouse, food acquisition and hamper delivery operations • Lead the development of the organizational operational and financial plan, including the development and monitoring of annual operating budgets • Guide, mentor and coach the senior leadership team to ensure achievement of identified outcomes • Ensure the development, implementation and monitoring of an effective organizational structure that supports: o Short and long-term workforce development and succession plans o Volunteer recruitment, development and succession • Ensure regular review of performance against the goals of the organization are completed and provide ad hoc reports to the Board and stakeholders - 3 - Harvest Manitoba President & Chief Executive Officer Accountability 4: Board of Directors Support • Working with the Board Chair, identify key issues for Board deliberations and develop agendas and materials for Board meetings • Ensure formal written documentation including reports, background information and briefing materials are prepared and presented to the Board of Directors and its committees as required to support decisions and the development of policy and direction as well as to ensure the Board is appropriately informed of progress and all stakeholders are kept well-informed. • As the official link between the Board and the employees of the organization, ensure effective formal communication and the appropriate sharing of information between the Board and the organization’s employees • Support the development of individual directors as board members ABOUT THE EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS The President and CEO is responsible for ensuring the overall success of the Harvest Manitoba organization and requires strong leadership skills and the ability to develop and maintain an environment aligned with the organization’s key values. The Board of Directors relies on the knowledge, skills and abilities of the individual in the role. Candidates must meet the experience requirements and be able to demonstrate several leadership and technical competencies. The successful candidate will bring to this role a post secondary degree in a relevant discipline complemented with a minimum of seven years senior leadership experience, preferably in non-profit organizations. As Harvest Manitoba is a unique organization, experience in establishing and operating effective logistics and distribution networks would be a definite asset. A demonstrated successful track record advocating for policy changes in addition to securing donations of funding, products and/or volunteer time is necessary. An in-depth understanding of how poverty and food insecurity impacts local communities is required. Extensive experience leading a combination of staff and volunteers is desired. Cam Elliott Superintendent, Wapusk National Park & Manitoba North National Historic Sites Usually people don’t view the implementation of new rules and regulations as a reason to rejoice, but in the case of the Wapusk National Park Use Regulations, which came into effect on March 26, 2010, there is reason to celebrate. The Wapusk regulations are unique in Canada’s national park system. By allowing certain activities customarily prohibited in other national parks, they reflect and respect the unique history and traditional local use of the Wapusk National Park (NP) lands. The commitment to the distinct local use of Wapusk NP was made by the Government of Canada in the Federal- Provincial Agreement to Establish Wapusk National Park, an agreement that grew out of public consultations in the Churchill area. Certain activities are generally prohibited in national parks: hunting, trapping, gathering natural products from the land, using all terrain vehicles to access park lands, and using cabins to support these activities. However, the Wapusk Park Establishment Agreement (1996) recognizes these as traditional user activities for the longtime residents of Churchill at the time the agreement was signed. (SWI) was flooded with public interest and media attention from across Canada by people who have a love and fascination with wolves. Initially, SWI was © Volker Beckmann © Volker puzzled by the interest, but quickly realized there was an opportunity here for tourism and economic development, as well as a further cause: to protect a much maligned species. Thompson is surrounded by wilderness boreal forest and an unknown number of wolves. Thompson residents and homeowners living along lakes in the area are generally not bothered by wolves and have a tolerant attitude. After the wolf mural was completed, SWI created over 50 beauti- fully painted 7.5 ft-tall concrete wolf statues and situated them throughout Manitoba. A large rock-face sculpture of howling wolves was also carved in Thompson. The wolf theme is now clearly evident in the community.
