Mind to Meme: Uncovering the Origins of Shared Consciousness Between Judaism and Tibetan Buddhism Towards a Science of Consciousness Conference Tucson, Arizona April 8 – 12, 2004 Gilah Yelin Hirsch 2412 Oakwood Ave Venice, California, 90291 (310-821-6848) www.gilah.com © 2004, Gilah Yelin Hirsch 1 I was born in the mid 40’s and was brought up in an ethnocentric Jewish ghetto of 120,000 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. My first language was Yiddish, and my second was French, learned as I played with the French Canadian kids on the block. My third and fourth languages were English and Hebrew, studied simultaneously in the Jewish Peretz Day School, in which half the day’s work was in Yiddish and Hebrew and the other half in English and French. Non-Jews were referred to as gentiles, and I did not know any until high school. I never saw a black person until my first trip to New York City when I was 14. My milieu was entirely Jewish, hailing from deeply Jewish parents – father Ezra Yelin, atheist Talmudic scholar; his father, a rabbi and “Rosh Yeshiva” (head of the Yeshiva) in Bialystock, Poland. My paternal great-grandfather, Rabbi Aryeh Layb Yelin, wrote one of the commentaries on the Talmud, “Yafeh Aynayim” in the Bavli Talmud. My mother, renowned Canadian writer/poet, chronicled Jewish life in Montreal, founded the first Jewish kindergarten at the Jewish Peretz School, and later was a founding member of the first Reconstructionist synagogue, Dorshei Emet, in Montreal. I went to Jewish schools, and spent all my summers from 4 to 17 at Jewish summer camps conducted in Hebrew. -

Wu Assessing the benefits of practicing spirituality or religion while incarcerated: A study of formerly incarcerated men in Texas ABSTRACT This qualitative study explored former prisoners’ beliefs regarding the benefits of practicing spirituality or religion during their time of incarceration. The prison population is seldom included in mainstream research studies. Additionally, a personal relationship to religion and spirituality is a difficult phenomenon to quantify in a standardized and formulaic way. This research sought to explore if spirituality or religion can be considered a protective factor during a time of incarceration. This study was conducted with face-to-face interviews, using both demographic and narrative questions. A qualitative, flexible research method design was used to gather and analyze data from 13 former male inmates to allow them to fully express their interpretations of their faith practices during incarceration. There were a number of significant findings regarding the benefits of practicing spirituality or religion while incarcerated. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY The Choosing People: Constructing Jewish Buddhist Identity in America by Nicole Heather Libin A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES CALGARY, ALBERTA APRIL, 2009 © Nicole Heather Libin 2009 ISBN: 978-0-494-51194-7 Abstract Evidence suggests that Jews comprise an overwhelmingly disproportionate number of American Buddhist converts. This study examines this phenomenon, exploring the identity construction and lived experiences of Jewish individuals who identify with Buddhism. Through in-depth, unstructured interviews with fifteen individuals, supplemented by textual sources, the study investigates the ways self-identified Jewish Buddhists characterize their own identities, examining the nature of both their Buddhist and Jewish identities, and the relationships between the two. Using a journey motif, the research explores the roles these identities play in their lives, how they came about, and how they continue to evolve. The Jewish individuals in this study moved from processes of Seeking Meaning to Finding Something that Resonates to Creating Their Own Paths of Meaning. Unstructured interviews and constructivist grounded theory are key tools for understanding Jewish identity as it is lived and constructed by individuals today. Identities are multiple, evolving, and variable. Individuals are the arbiters of meaning. They seek, choose, and follow paths and traditions based on personal meaning and relevance. They choose how to connect to being Jewish, which parts of Buddhist teachings fit with what they are seeking and what makes sense for them, and how the two traditions fit into their lives and identities. -

Constructing Religious Modernities: Hybridity, Reinterpretation, and Adaptation in Thailand's International Meditation Centers by Brooke Schedneck A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved April 2012 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Juliane Schober, Chair Tracy Fessenden James Rush ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2012 ABSTRACT This dissertation project addresses one of the most critical problems in the study of religion: how new formations of religion are constructed and constituted. My work builds on the recent revisions of the secularization theory, which demonstrates the alternative and hybrid ways people seek out religion in modernity. To this end, my project examines the emerging popularity and phenomenon of international meditation centers in Thailand, focusing on encounters between international meditation center teachers and their international students. Through participant observation and in-depth interviews at these sites throughout Thailand, my project explores the social processes of religious change and adaptation, and the construction of religious meaning. I detail the historical conditions that led to the formation of persisting ideas of Buddhism by tracing the continuities between Orientalist interpretations and modern-day spiritual seekers. My work contributes to a greater understanding of the most recent articulation of this engagement and interaction between Buddhism and the international community and adds to the burgeoning scholarship that reconsiders -

Buddhism Ecumenical and Interfaith Buddhism: Coming Together in America Ecumenical and Interfaith Buddhism: Coming Together in America Summary: Since the 1970s, Buddhist leaders from various traditions have engaged together in ecumenical councils and organizations to address prevalent challenges for Buddhism in North America. These events have brought together Buddhist traditions that, in the past, have had limited contact with one another. In addition, these groups have become involved in interfaith partnerships, particularly with Christian and Jewish organizations. Every year the Buddhist leaders of Los Angeles come together for the springtime celebration of Vesak— the Birthday of the Buddha. While the ceremony of bathing the baby Buddha with sweetened tea is primarily observed by Buddhists in East Asia, the Theravada monks and laity from South Asia here in the United States, in Los Angeles for instance, participate with pleasure and reverence, each taking the wooden dipper in hand, with a bow to the newborn Buddha. The monks are all members of the Sangha Council of Southern California. Such a “sangha council” is something relatively new in the long history of Buddhism. The Sangha Council began in 1980 under the leadership of a monk originally from Sri Lanka, Venerable Havanpola Ratanasara. Among its founding leaders were Venerable Do Ahn Kim of the Kwan Um Sa Korean Temple, Venerable Thich Thien-an of the first Vietnamese Buddhist Temple, Venerable Walpola Piyananda of the Dharma Vijaya Buddhist Vihara, Lama Geshe Gyeltsen of the Thubten Dargye Ling Tibetan Temple, and Reverend Masao Kodani of the Jodo Shinshu Senshin Buddhist Temple. The council brings together representatives from every major branch and school of the Buddhist tradition—monks from the Theravada traditions of Southern Asia, from the Mahayana traditions of East Asia, from the Vajrayana traditions of Tibet, and ministers from the Jodo Shinshu tradition which does not have monks but, rather, married clergy.
