I urge you to study the above in an effort to determine what you might like to submi t to supplement and augment the scope of research material published. Please call me on any article, doctønent, etc. which you would like to submi t. As you can see, The Quarterly carries material not only on Dal las and Dal las County but research done of a national interest. We do hope that we may have more research submitted this year on Dallas and Dallas County.

Because of the response to the June, 1976 Revolutionary War Ancestry i ssue of the The Quarterly The Society Board and the Editor have plans to publish those ancestors listed in the June, 1975 Bicentennial lssue in the same format which will include the lineages and information from the Revolutionary War Ancestor to the present-day person. This data will be that submitted to Mrs. Horris and now on file at the Dallas Public Library.

If you intended to send in your fonn and did not do so, you may forward it to me until October 1, 1976. This will be a definite deadline with no extension. Fonns are available from me or the Library.

SEPT, !976 115 ANNUAL REPORT 1975-1976

This has been an educational and informative year for the 1975-1976 Board of Directors. Many of us have learned about the activities and the needs of our Society with the help of experienced board members. The Officers have been so cooperative and helpful. Each ene has worked very hard and gi ven so much of their time. Truly, it has been an excellent team to work with. Dave Arant, along with his committee, has done a beautiful job publishing the Yearbook. I am sure you will want this project repeated. It really helps us to know about ane another ·and if we are researching the same ancestors. Also, Dave took on the chairmanship of the workshop. I am sorry that I missed it; all reports are that it was tremendous and very well put together. Thanks to each member on the committee. Dave tells me it was a great team effort. The quarterlies have been outstanding. Thanks to Minnie Champ and her publi cation conunittee for the best quarterlies I have seen. "The Revolutionary War Ancestry lssue11 will be an ass et to any library. Collins Radio Print Shop has done a most professional j ob. We have over 400 memberships -- if spouses are counted, membership would be over 500. This is an increase of 50 members over the same period last year. The average attendance at each meeting has been over 100. Thanks to Mike Farmer for all the letters mailed to prospective members and all the new members. This is great . Also, thanks to Sea Brown and her committee for all the telephone calls each month reminding us about the meetings. Thanks to Rosemarie Snell for sending out annual notices to each of us reminding us about. our dues. We have had very interesting programs this year, thanks to Nancy Smith and all her work. Six of our eight programs were given by our members to whom we are grate ful. It is great to have such capable people within our Society. If you have sug gestions for prograrns, or know of someone, please let Dave Arant, or Mrs. Opal Hollis, know by a note. OUr current project is .the reprinting of The Biographical History ~Dallas County. We are grateful to Frances Hardin and Pauline Morris for all the typ ing on the index to this book. Thanks to Bob Swann for handling the orders. It will be going to press very soon, since we have reached our quota of orders. Thanks to each member of the Board for

Extracts from the HISTORY OF OAK CLIFF published in the Oak Cliff Edition, 'Dispatch Journal' between March 6 and June 22, 1939 by Don Dreesen. The second annual session of the Oak Cliff institute opened on Sept. 3 1 1888. This early Oak Cliff private school was headed by J. C. Roberts, principal. T. L. Mars alis this year offered to Rev. Joseph Martiniere, Roman Catholic cleric of Dallas, a site of land in Oak Cliff for a charitable institution. This gift was approved by Bishop N.A. Gallagher of Galveston. On this site the first Catholic unit established in Oak Cliff was an orphan age located at what is new Adams and Page streets. The building was erected under the direction of Bishop Gallagher and was completed in 1891, at a cost of $5,000, on the eight acre site. The orphanage was first conducted by the Sisters of Mercy and later by the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, who new con duct St. Paul' s Hospital. Cochran Chapel Cemetery, located by the Cochran Chapel United Methodist Church. Dallas, Texas, had its beginning when Sarah Jane Cochran, the infant dau ghter of William M. and Nancy Jane Hughes Cochran, died on April 7, 1853. Her parents looked over the farm to choose a right and proper place for a family graveyard in which to place the body of their darling baby girl. They chose a beautiful wooded spot on the southeast side of the branch that ran in front of their house a short distance away. It was the custom in those days to lay to rest your loved enes on yo~r own property not far from the house. as death to the early pioneers was no stranger and it was a comfort to know the graves were nearby. Cochran Chapel Methodist Church, the first deeded church in the County, and Cochran Chapel Cemetery were named for Mrs . Cochran and her husband . Nancy Jane died Oct. 15, 1877 and rests near her beloved husband William M. Cochran and her son George Washington Cochran. Two other sons, William P. and James M. Cochran, their wives, some of their children and grandchildren are buried nearby as is their only daughter, Martha AliceCochran Harris, her husband and some of their family. SEPT. 19?6 132 COCHRAN CHAPEL - Continued and John B. and Margaret Hughes Bachman. These family names live on in Record Crossing, Knight Street, Bachman Lake and Bachman Boulevard. There is an Obadiah Knight Elementary School--Mr. Knight was the first to deed three acres of land for school purposes in the County; also there is a Nancy Jane Cochran Elementary School in Oak Cliff. Descendants of these sisters by other names--Taylors, Fields, Browns, Harrisons, Laws, Jacobys--lie in family groupings in the cemetery as do some children and grandchildren of a Hughes brother. Nannie Cochran Brown, dau ghter of W.P. and Amanda Cochran, with her husband Ernest and two of their child ren are buried in the Brown family plot. Nannie was baptized in Cochran Chapels' first church building, married in the second church, and buried from the third church. There are family plots of Harveys, Wrights, Howells---neighbors and friends of the Cochrans. Joshua Wright ("Mr . Pete") who is bur i ed among the Wrights was always telling amusing incidents that happened when he was young. "One Sunday, 11 he said, "the wife of ene of the early ministers of the church was not only pious hut over ly zealous. She took him as ide and talked to him about dying. This of course frightened him. He didn"t want to die and be buried in the nearby cemetery. Then she asked him if he were a Christian? He sa id he didn''t know . He was more frightened than ever. She proceeded to lecture him for not being certain whether he was a Christian or not. By this time he was almost in tears, and as she continued on and on he finally replied, 1 If I have to die, I 1 d just as soon go to Hell as any place. " ' In a lone grave in the southwest corner of the cemetery rests the remains of a stranger. He came to the Cochran Gin and Corn Mill seeking work. Nancy Jane hi red him and about a month later he died suddenly without revealing anything about himself hut his firs t nam e . Mrs. Cochran buried him in the family cemetery to awai t the coming of the Lord. During the Civil War when most of the men were gene the women were afraid to put a light in the church at night. Prayer meetings where held in the northwest corner of the graveyard not far from the Cochran house. It was a farniliar sight to see the women and children kneeling in prayer taking their problems to the Lord. Several of those buried in the cemetery di ed in def ense of their country~ - the most recent being Daniel Jacoby in the Korean War. Virginius Howell (accord ing to John H. Cochran's Dallas County: .!_!! Pioneers and Progress, p. 27) "was shot in the forehead and killed in battle with the Creek Inidans--on Dec. 25, 1861 and was brought back home and buried in the graveyard at Cochran Chapel." An interesting gravestone with the American Flag on its top reads "In memory of Knight W. Field (1876-1918) Ist Lieutenant Medical Corps-Buried in France Romagane Cemetery-He gave his life for his country. " William A. Knight, a Confederate sol dier, died in Des Are, Arkansas. A wagon was sent for his body to be brought back for burial in Cochran Chapel Cemetery. George W. Newman of Pleasant Valley drove the wagon. On the Knight gravestone is inscribed this poem:

"He has gone 6n the last leng march To the land where nevermore Shall the bugle sound reveille Or the dreadful cannon roar He who for his country dies Dies not Sut liveth evennore."

There are other gravestones on which we find poetry. On the M.M. and John B. Bachman stene we read:

The John and Kate Knight Field stone quotes from the Psalms:

"Faithful his trust even unto death" "The Lord preserveth the fai thful."

John D. Cochran and Charles C. Patterson were members of Woodmen of the World and their stanes have the W 0 W emblem; Laura Jacoby, an active member of Daughters of American Revolution, the DAR insignia. The stane of George Hughes is inscribed with the emblem of the Southern Cross of Honor and that of James M. Cochran with the emblem of Commander of the Confederate Veterans. James was quite young when he en li sted in the Confederate Army. He was seriously wounded in the war and there was a possibility that he would lose his arm if he didn't get home where he could obtain proper medical attention. He and a fellow soldier walked home-all the way from Arkansas. But his arm was saved. Many stones have the open Bible,

SEPT, 1976 139 CARROLLTON STREET RENAMED FOR LARNER ANCESTOR

Mr. Wi l liam Larner personified the spirit of pioneer determination in 1842 when he sold his f arm in Carrollton, Illinois, and brought his wife, Mary Jennings Larner, and their three small children (John Wesley, Mary Ann and Patrick Marion) to Peters Col ony, Texas . They established a new home on the 640-acre tract of land which is in the heart of the present City of Carrollton, TX. During the next 8 years befare his untimely death at the age of 36 or 38 in 1850 , he established himself as an esteemed member of the growi ng corranuni ty. Mary had two more children in Texas, Mary Jane & William Franklin, bef are she d.ied, and William married Elizabeth Masters Pearson , young widow whose husband had di ed enroute to Texas from Missouri. Their daughter, Clarinda, was barn short ly bef ore Wi l liam d i ed from pneumonia. The lim1tea records from that period indicate that h e was a Justice of the Pe ace and taxpayer on the f irst recorde d Tax List i n 1846. Isaac Webb's d i ary refers to him seve ral times as "Wi lliam Larner, Esq." Wi lliam Larner was buried in a holl ow log because there was no convenient wood from which to make a coffin. The City Council of Carrollton, as a Bicentennial ernphasis, resolved to honor the memoey of thi s early settler by renaming a street wi thin the geographical boun dary of the original survey of his land. School Road between Belt Line and Crosby was o f ficiall y changed to Larner Road on May 20, 1976, in a cerernony with Mayor War d Steenson; e i ty Manager Clonis Luallen, and 4 generations of Wi l liam Larner descendants attending: Ray Larner, a great grand.son; Marilyn Larner Hicks, great g r eat grandda ughter; Ms. Parn Hicks, great- great-great granddaughter; and, Trae Hi eks, a g r eat- great- great- great grandson. The street will carry a double sign for ane year in order to faci l i tate the change of names.

SEPT. 1976 155 'WHAT TO DO JF THE COURTHOUSE HAS BURNED'

By William Lusk Crawford

In my several years of family research, I have reached the point where I am told, "The courthouse burned." or "Sherman went through here." Every workshop I attend you hear the question from the floor, "What do you do when the courthouse has burned?" The answer given to this question may be "look several years beyond the date you need and see if your trans action has been re-recorded at a later date." Or, "You may find something from the local ti tle company." While trying to determine the members of the Crawford family that came to Den ton Co., Texas, from Monroe Co., KY and when they settled in this county, I found that the original migration from Kentucky to Texas was made by William Crawford and his wife, Elizabeth Howard Craw ford. He

Before me the undersigned authority on this day personally appeared S. H. Crawford who is to me well and personally known to be a resident credable citizen of said countr and state and who after being by me duly sworn deposes and says that he is now 71 years of age and that he has resided in Denton Co. since the year of 1856. That he was well and per sonally acquainted with one William Crawford and his wife, Elizabeth Crawford, both now deceased. That the said William Crawford

This illustrates that there is sometimes "gold" in "those title offices." Later, I accidently found the deed for the property purchased 20 May 1856 when they arrived from Monroe Co., KY and filed in Deed Book B the same date in the Altan Courthouse. The deed had been re f i led for the record thirty-two years later in Deed Book 36, pg. 388, 8 May 1888 at 1: 00 PM by J. R. McCormick, Co. Clerk. He gives the Deed Book and page with date filed by Co. Clerk Lloyd at Alten Court house in 1856. The deed gives Mr. William Kelly and wife, Marthaan, as Grantors and Wm. Crawford of Monroe Co., KY as Grantee. The land is described as being on Hickory Creek and a part of Willis Hammond Survey. This information along wi th the ti tle company information told me that great grandfather William came to Texas in 1854 and settled on Hickory Creek where it empties into Lake Dallas. Members of his family, and most of their descendants, lived, or are living, their lives in Denten Co., many in the same vicini ty of Lewis ville, TX. The older members are buried in the Old Hall and Flower Mound Cemeteries.
