Volunteers Needed! I am reaching out to you to help with the 2018 California Festival of Speed taking place April 20 thru April 22, with set-up on Thursday April 19, 2018. Visit www.zone8.org/events/speedfestival.php to learn more! Or see us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/CaliforniaFestivalOfSpeed.

We need about 400 volunteers to make the California Festival of Speed a success again. If you are interested in helping please email me ASAP so I can get you on the schedule. Some jobs go very quickly! Without enough volunteers we can’t safety put on such a large event. This is Zone 8’s largest event and proceeds from it subsidize the cost of Zone activities such as the End of Year Awards Banquet. Also, by volunteering, a portion of the profits are returned to the Regions based upon the number of shifts you work…so the more the merrier!

Saturday, 21 April 2018, 55 Years of 911 Timeline at the 2018 California Festival of Speed On Saturday at this year's California Festival of Speed we will continue our tradition of displaying a timeline of exceptional Porsches for the public's viewing pleasure.

We invite you to submit your car for consideration to be a part of this fantastic display.

This year the timeline will consist of 911's -- hopefully one of each vintage for the 55 years that the 911 has been in production.

The timeline will be displayed in the center of all the action near vendor's row; where it will be the focus of all who attend.

This is your chance for you and your car to be famous! Come get your 15 minutes of fame!

Registration ends on 7 April 2018, 11:59 PM PDT at msreg.com/55Timeline 5

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will launch 10 satellites for the Iridium next mobile communications fleet.

The launch is planned for 15:08 UTC (8:08 AM PDT) which is 1 hour and 11 minutes after sunrise so it probably won’t be as spectacular as an after dusk launch. Delayed from December and March 18.

US Women Claim Historic Cross-Country Gold in Team Sprint From Olympic.org, 21 February 2018

THE USA WON THRILLING WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM SPRINT AT THE ALPENSIA CROSS COUNTRY CENTRE ON 21 FEBRUARY TO GIVE THEIR COUNTRY A FIRST EVER OLYMPIC GOLD IN THE DISCIPLINE, WHILE NORWAY’S MARIT BJORGEN CONFIRMED HER STATUS AS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL WINTER OLYMPIAN OF ALL TIME.

Going into the final leg, it was clear that Norway, Sweden and the USA would share the podium but the colour of medal for each was in doubt until the very last seconds.

The American duo of Jessica Diggins and Kikkan Randall produced the race of their lives, clocking 15.56.47 to leave their Scandinavian rivals battling it out for silver and bronze. In the decisive leg, Sweden’s Stina Nilsson crossed the line 19 hundredths of a second behind Diggins, leaving Norway’s

Maiken Caspersen Falla trailing almost three seconds behind, meaning pre-event favourites Norway had to settle for bronze.

“It feels unreal, I can't believe it just happened," said an ecstatic Diggins. “In the final stretch I was just thinking, 'Go, go, go, I'm giving it everything I had.”

She added that doing justice to her team-mate Randall provided her with the extra motivation to dig deep during the final surge for the line. “I've got someone who I really love and care about waiting for me at the finishing line and I just wanted to make her proud”.

Randall was equally effusive about her partner. “I had so much adrenaline as she was coming down, but if there's anybody I'd have 100 percent faith in coming down that finishing stretch as fast as possible, it's Jessie," said the 35-year-old Randall, for whom PyeongChang 2018 represents a fifth Winter Olympics.

The Americans had not won a medal in cross-country since Bill Koch took silver in the 30km race in Innsbruck more than 40 years ago, and they had never previously topped the podium in the discipline.

Traditional powerhouses Norway and Sweden were expected to do battle for the top two places and led the way for almost the entire race.

sgvr.pca.org 51 of 61 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 27 February 2018

With the racers taking turns to speed around the 1.176 km track, Randall and Diggins had to give everything in order to stay in touch with the Scandinavians.

FURIOUS PACE

Randall kept the Americans in the hunt on her last leg, before handing over to Diggins for the sixth and final lap which was raced at a furious pace as the lead changed hands several times.

Having moved past Norway’s Falla, Diggins set her sights on leader Nilsson, who had already taken gold in the individual sprint. As they rounded the final bend the pace was electrifying.

Diggins surged past and thrust her ski across the line less than a ski’s length ahead of the Swede.

"I am very proud of our performance, I was really digging deep today to get the power over the last 100 metres,” reflected Nilsson. “But today USA was too strong and I really think they deserve the gold medal.”

Norway won one semifinal with Switzerland second, The USA won the other semifinal with Sweden second.

Police on the hunt for £500,000 vintage Porsche 911 RS that vanished from underground car park

A classic Porsche worth almost half a million pounds has been snatched from a secure car park in central

POLICE are investigating the theft of one of the UK’s most desirable Porsches after it was taken from an underground car park.

The 1973 Porsche 911 2.7RS, which is worth an estimated £500,000 (US$ 699,1757), vanished from the Q-Park facility in Pimlico, London.

7 Hagerty gives a price range of $489,000 to $884,000 for the “Touring” version of the Carrera RS 2.7

The car’s owner, David Clark, had been parking the yellow Porsche there for around a year, but hadn’t moved the motor since December.

But when Clark went to the £25 per day car park on Saturday to take the motor for a spin he was shocked to see it had disappeared.

The theft has been reported to the Met Police, while the car park have been asked to track down CCTV footage.

Clark said: “It was a beautiful day on Saturday and I was going to see a friend. When I went to the car park it was gone. I couldn’t believe it.

“There are two floors on the car park and I thought when I couldn’t find the car that I had lost the plot.

“I am shocked and devastated about the theft. It is one of the iconic Porsches.

“Anyone who is a fan of Porsche wants a 911 RS and this model was in beautiful condition.

“I imagine it has been stolen to order which doesn’t bode well for me. I suppose they hide it for a while or ship it abroad.”

The Porsche 911 2.7 RS has become a favourite among collectors (stock image)

Originally going on sale in 1973, the 911 2.7 RS models were created by Porsche to allow them to compete in the Group 5 Motorsport series, which is reserved for production vehicles.

Fitted with a 2.7-litre engine located at the rear of the car, just over 1,000 of the RS models were made.

With the capacity of around 210bhp, the car can accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 150mph - making it one of the quickest road-legal sports cars of its time.

The 911 2.7 RS has always been one of the most desirable Porsches but in recent years values have started to shoot through the roof, and are now typically worth around £500,000.
