The book demonstrates that teaching and learning are not generic, homogeneous activities that transcend time, space, and culture. Each chapter-long narrative in the book follows a classroom community through a unit of study geared to that community's unique social and cultural context--with its own distinct set of values and with learners who bring these values to class. The book thus reveals the "situatedness" of both teaching and learning. It helps illustrate how every classroom teacher can adapt standards into a learner-centered pedagogy that capitalizes on students' strengths. Contains a glossary.(Each chapter contains resources.) The idea for this series grew out of requests from many teachers around the country who participated in the development of the NCTE/IRA standards and who asked if we could publish a book or a series of books that would illustrate whatthe stan- dards might look like in actual classrooms at different grade levels. This request was both inviting and challenging. Because one of the main goals of NCTE is to support classroom teachers, providing a series of books that would help define the standards seemed like the sort of thing we should do and it is the type of thing, we like to think we do quite well. At Me same time, there were many challenges in developing these books. We wondered: Could we do it? What might these books look like? What standards would we use? How important would uniformity and consistency be among the books in the series? The four authors and I spent rime exploring these questions and it soon became evident that the development of this series was, perhaps, both simpler and even more important than we had originally thought. We decided that if we asked English language arts teachers who were doing interesting and challenging work in their classrooms to reflect in writing on their practices and to tell us their stories, the standards would be there, already at work in students' learning. After all, the English language arts standards did emerge from those practices that our membership and the IRA membership said they valued most. The stan- dards do not stand above and apart from the practices of actual classroom teachers, or dictate to themrather they represent what those teachers and the many others involved in English language arts education agree is the best and most productive current thinking about teaching and learning. We also decided that each book in the series did not have to follow the same generic format. What each book should do instead is tell its own story and use the format that best fits and supports the story or stories being told. All of us agreed that we wanted the books in this series to be stories or rich illustrations of classroom practice. Stories, we thought, would allow the writers to capture the rich and complex activities of teaching and learning and, in addition, would illustrate the interconnectedness of the English language arts and of the 7 standards themselves. We also wanted our readers tosee how teachers create contexts as well as learning experiences. We thought it was important for the readers to experience both the struggles and thesuccesses teachers and stu- dents encounter. And we hoped that the stories would make explicit the impor- tance of the teacher as researcher: We believe the standards are dynamic in nature and will change and improve only if teachers actively and deliberately . interrogate their own practicelearning and growing from their professional and classroom experiences. In these four books we meet caring teachers who meet allour most chal- lenging criteria for teaching and learning. Theyare women and men who think deeply about the quality of life and intellectual growth they provide for theirstu- dents. Some of the teachers we meet in the series arenew to the profession and are trying out ideas for the first time. Others have been teaching for many years but, as always, are reflecting on and questioningsome of their practices, and in their stories we see them making changes. All of them, whether theyare teach- ing five-year-olds or eighteen-year-olds, whether they themselves have been teaching for five or for eighteen or more years, put students' learningat the cen- ter of their curricula and engage their students in challenging, authentic experi- ences. By presenting an array of classroom portraits, these volumes clearly show that standards are always present in good practice and that there isno one way for the standards to be realized. I want to commend the teachers and students whoare featured in this series and the writers who told their stories. They have opened their classroomsto us and let us look in, and, in so doing, they have enrichedour understandings of what matters most in the English language arts. Coming to America 92 Glossary 126 Author 133 9 N.E/I STANA S FOR T E --ENGLISH NGUAGE The vision guiding these standards is that all students must have the oppor- tunities and resources to develop the language skills they need to pursue life's goals and to participate fully as informed, productive members of society. These standards assume that literacy growth begins before children enter school as they experience and experiment with literacy activities-reading and writing, and associating spoken words with their graphic representations. Recognizing this fact, these standards encourage the development of curriculum and instruction that makes productive use of the emerging literacy abilities that children bring to school. Furthermore, the standards provide ample room for the innovation and creativity essential to teaching and learning.

For background he currently serves as an at-large member on City of Eugene’s Sustainability Commission. He is a retired environmental professional. He and Merlyn Hough were on the International Board of Directors for Air & Waste Management Association. He is not speaking on behalf of the commission. They also have public comments during their meetings and there has been a lot of increased interest on air quality issues by the public, especially on particulate matter and air toxics. The commission formed a committee and we are in the process of getting ourselves educated on local issues. We are an advisory committee to the City Council and City Manager. As an outcome, we may have some recommendations to present to the City Council that would be forwarded to LRAPA. Saxion is particularly concerned about LRAPA’s budget and he knows local government is always strapped for money.

Reagan Professor David Roediger, University of Kansas ABSTRACT “Intercourse with them will be dangerous,” warned the Deputy Surgeon General to all U.S. soldiers bound for the Philippines. In his 1899 pamphlet on sanitation, Colonel Henry Lippincott alerted troops to the consequences of becoming too friendly with the native population of the islands. From the beginning of the U.S. occupation of the Philippines, interracial sexual contact between Americans and Filipinos was a threatening prospect, informing everything from how social intercourse and diplomacy was structured, to how the built environment of Manila was organized. This project utilizes a transnational approach to examine a wide range of interracial sexual relationships -from the casual and economic to the formal and long term- between Americans and Filipinos in the overseas colony from1898–1946. My dissertation explores the ways that such relations impacted the U.S. imperial project in the islands, one that relied on a degree of social proximity with Filipinos on the one hand, while maintaining a hard line of racial and civilizational hierarchy on the other.

He founded the brokerage in 2001 and sold it in 2012, but still keeps an office there for the 25 employees of Terry Paranych Group. Paranych has invited me here to go “Driving for Dollars” with him; that’s when he prowls Edmonton for properties to buy and sell.

    News for Union College parents and families. Students perform in "Twelve," a play based on "Twelve Angry Men" by Reginald Rose. Dear Parents and Families: A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN OF STUDENTS Winter term has been busier than ever, featuring scores of events, from guest lectures, art exhibits and a student theater production of “Twelve” to celebrations of culture, gender and race. Guest lecturer David Clarke spoke about the intersection between religious studies and politics. Students discussed perceptions of time with the Philosophy Club and shared their words at the International Poetry Fest. In addition, a group of students hosted a week of inspiring events to raise awareness of human trafficking, featuring guest speakers from the FBI and Safe Inc., and Corbin Addison, author of A Walk Across the Sun. The College hosted a dozen events commemorating February as Black History Month. During Hijabi for a Day, the campus community learned about the Islamic tradition of Hijab. In addition, the entire campus is busy with Recyclemania, an eight-week recycling competition that pits Union against 400 other schools in the U.S. and Canada. And for the fourth straight year, our students took part in Random Acts of Kindness Week, planned by the Kenney Community Center, with activities and community service on- and off-campus. This has become a welcome Union tradition, turning the coldest month on the calendar into one of the warmest on campus. Please read further for other news from campus. Stephen C.
