Non-Stop Production presents UNCLENCHING THE FISTS a film by KIRA KOVALENKO 97 min - Russia – 2021 – Color - 2,35 - 5.1 INTL PR: INTL SALES: DDA Antoine Guilhem [email protected] [email protected] Photos and press kit can be downloaded from https://www.wildbunch.biz/movie/unclenching-the-fists/ SYNOPSIS In a former mining town in North Ossetia, a young woman struggles to escape the stifling hold of the family she loves as much as she rejects. THE FILM The small mining town of Mizur lies high in the mountains of North Ossetia between steep cliffs. Zaur has settled his family here. He keeps his sons and daughter on a short leash, blind to the line that separates fatherly concern from overprotectiveness. His eldest, Akim, has already run off to the nearest city, Rostov, to find work. Meanwhile, his youngest, Dakko, isn’t entirely sure yet what he wants out of life, while middle child, Ada, is actively planning her own escape. Although she’s already a young woman, her father still insists on treating her like a defenseless little girl. Freeing herself from his strong paternal embrace to finally embark on an independent adult life of her own is proving tougher than she anticipated. But just what is this father trying to protect his daughter from? Kira Kovalenko: The initial inspiration for the story came from a line in Faulkner’s Intruder in the Dust about how, while some people can endure slavery, nobody can stand freedom. The idea of freedom as a burden was the single most important theme for me while I was working on the film. -

Corruption as Shared Culpability: Religion, Family, and Society in Andrey Zvyagintsev's Leviathan (2014) Abstract This article engages in close analysis of how Andrey Zvyagintsev depicts corruption and its various manifestations: moral, familial, societal, and institutional, in Leviathan (Leviafan, 2014). While other post- Soviet films address the problem of prevalent corruption in Russia, Zvyagintsev’s work is the first ot provoke strong public reactions, not only from government and Russian Orthodox Church officials, but also from Orthodox and political activist groups. The film demonstrates that the instances of legal and moral failings in one aspect of existence are a sign of a much deeper and wider-ranging problem that affects all other spheres of human experience. -

ACTUAL RUSSIANS RUSSIAN TELEVISION AND THE DYNAMICS OF GLOBAL CULTURAL EXCHANGE Jeffrey Brassard University of Alberta [email protected] Abstract: Despite continual improvements in production and writing quality, live-action Russian series have fared poorly in the global market. While many deals have been struck, Western remakes of Russian series have failed to appear, and live-action programs have failed to find mainstream audiences outside of Russia. Russian animated series, on the other hand, have enjoyed global success. The success and failure of different types of Russian series in the global media market suggests that many of the central problems of cultural exchange remain. -
Press-Kit Presents a Film by Konstantin Lopushansky THROUGH THE
Press-kit presents A film by Konstantin Lopushansky THROUGH THE BLACK GLASS The drama titled Through the Black Glass is a modern interpretation of such famous classical plots as Cinderella and Scarlet Sails, with a touch of Chaplin`s City Lights. The main heroine is an 18-year-old blind girl from a provincial orphanage, who unexpectedly gets a chance of a lifetime. A wealthy man offers to pay for an expensive eye surgery on the condition that she agrees to marry him before the operation, without a single glance at the groom. Alas, fate hands out happy endings sparingly, and the vision, miraculously regained by the heroine, gives her an unpleasant insight into stark realities of life. The film directed by Konstantin Lopushansly, who also wrote the original script, is not just a new rendition of the classical plot; it is a deep glance at the ambiguous relationship between men and women in the present-day Russia. The author makes an emphasis on dynamics of editing, music, photography, and, obviously, the choice of actors. The director says, “You can analyze the film in view of several genres: tragic melodrama, a modern rendition of the classical Cinderella plot, and a religious drama loosely based on the conceptual conflict in Dostoevsky`s Gentle Creature. The story is centered at the tragic collision of two world outlooks: the religious belief and the atheistic view, set against the newest Russian history. The latter interpretation is the closest to me, and is in tune with my views as a film director. Yet, this still leaves space for detailed elaboration into the other two variants, melodrama being the priority. -
The Uses of Animation 1
The Uses of Animation 1 1 The Uses of Animation ANIMATION Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape, digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. THE MOST COMMON USES OF ANIMATION Cartoons The most common use of animation, and perhaps the origin of it, is cartoons. Cartoons appear all the time on television and the cinema and can be used for entertainment, advertising, 2 Aspects of Animation: Steps to Learn Animated Cartoons presentations and many more applications that are only limited by the imagination of the designer. The most important factor about making cartoons on a computer is reusability and flexibility. The system that will actually do the animation needs to be such that all the actions that are going to be performed can be repeated easily, without much fuss from the side of the animator. -

Russia's Kosovo: a Critical Geopolitics of the August 2008 War Over South
Toal.fm Page 670 Monday, December 22, 2008 10:20 AM Russia’s Kosovo: A Critical Geopolitics of the August 2008 War over South Ossetia Gearóid Ó Tuathail (Gerard Toal)1 Abstract: A noted political geographer presents an analysis of the August 2008 South Ossetian war. He analyzes the conflict from a critical geopolitical perspective sensitive to the importance of localized context and agency in world affairs and to the limitations of state- centric logics in capturing the connectivities, flows, and attachments that transcend state bor- ders and characterize specific locations. The paper traces the historical antecedents to the August 2008 conflict and identifies major factors that led to it, including legacies of past vio- lence, the Georgian president’s aggressive style of leadership, and renewed Russian “great power” aspirations under Putin. The Kosovo case created normative precedents available for opportunistic localization. The author then focuses on the events of August 2008 and the competing storylines promoted by the Georgian and Russian governments.
