Baptism of Our Lord January 12, 2020 10:30 A.M Trinity Lutheran Church Marked with the Cross of Christ we are called to Love, Serve, and Celebrate Christ, the Community and One Another 16138 Molino Dr. Victorville, CA 92395 • www.trinityvictorville.org • 1-760-245-3225 • email: [email protected] Welcome! We are delighted to worship with you. Visitors can expect a warm welcome from your worshiping neighbor and others! Baptism of Our Lord January 12, 2020 10:30 a.m. Light to the World In the waters of the Jordan, Jesus is revealed as the be- loved Son of God. Through this great epiphany, Jesus fulfills all righteousness and becomes the servant of God who will bring forth justice and be a light to the na- tions. In the waters of baptism we too are washed by the Word, anointed by the Spirit, and named God’s be- loved children. Joined with Christ, we are then light to the world along with him, proclaiming good news to all who are oppressed or in need of God’s healing. Style: Worship in response to God’s grace with a variety of music, a gospel message in an informal style, Holy Communion, and special opportunities for children as nurtured in awakening faith. Children of all ages are always welcome in Worship! Activity Bags are available on the hooks below the nametags in the entryway. Also grab children’s bulletins from the ushers! Nursery care is also available for children 5 and under, through the Fellowship Hall door and to the right. Parents may also use the room di- rectly behind the Sanctuary, which has quiet toys and sound. Ushers will gladly assist you. All: Please indicate your presence using the tear-off form on the announcement insert and placing it in the offering plate when the offering is collected. Legend: Bold words are for all to speak. Please join in singing all the songs as printed in the bulletin. Music for songs noted ELW may be found in the red hymnal in the pew racks. After worship: Greet those around you, and join us for refreshments in the room directly behind the Sanctuary. ELCA: Trinity is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, with whom we partner to witness to God’s love, grace, and power throughout the globe. 1 G ATHERING + WORD + MEAL + SENDING At Trinity we use the simple four-fold order of worship that has been used by Chris- WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS tians around the world for many centuries. • Loving Well in the Face of Loss: Preparing Foster Families for When a Child Leaves
Loving Well in the Face of Loss: Preparing Foster Families for When a Child Leaves Our Story Jennifer and I met in Junior High in our church youth group. Early in high school we began dating. Although we didn’t attend the same high school, we learned to make our relationship work—which would be helpful when we decided to attend different colleges. We quickly learned that a long-distance relationship was much harder than it seemed, but with God’s grace, and Jennifer’s, we made it through and were married in 2001. Up to this point, everything had gone as planned, which reinforced my planning nature. As Jennifer began her teaching career, I started on a Master’s degree in Counseling while working in a psychiatric clinic. The plan was in full swing—and the plan included waiting until I was done with school to start a family. In 2004, as I approached graduation, we began trying to get pregnant. We were excited, but not overly- eager. However, we were “ahead” of most of our friends and it was quite a big deal to some. Early in 2005, I was hired into a position that would put my new Counseling degree into use training and evaluating foster and adoptive families. I found in this new position a way to put my calling to build strong families into practice and the satisfaction of protecting vulnerable children. Everything was right on track. In 2007, after 2 full years of trying to start a family, we finally decided to go and see a specialist.

In fact, the use of music with God’s people is encouraged throughout the pages of Scripture. In the Old Testament, the psalmist writes, “Sing to him a new song; play skillfully and shout for joy.”1 In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul writes to the Ephesians, “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.”2 Throughout Christian history, wherever there has been renewal, revival and restoration, fresh songs of praise and worship have followed and in many cases serve as cultural and historical indicators of what the Lord was doing in His people at that particular time in history.
