Due to the Covid 19 we have been unable to have our regular monthly Messy Church at Road Methodist since March. As the Methodist Church remains closed for the time being we have been emailing monthly packs of activities out to families, we know are interested.

In addition to these packs we have been joining with to hold a short (about 25 minutes) ‘Zoom’ celebration of all things Messy which is based on the same theme. We are starting to produce an even shorter (about 10 minutes) summary of this which is place on You Tube, however, these are ‘unlisted’ meaning you will not find them unless you have the actual web location detail, we can send you this on request, or you can find details on the circuit website and Facebook page.

Circuit website: pocklingtonandmarketweighton.church Facebook: www.facebook.com/PMWMethodistCircuit/ Contact: Graham and Suzanne Patrick, 01430 861774 [email protected] You will see some familiar faces on both the ‘Zoom’ sessions and the You Tube so come and join in the fun. We look forward to seeing you.

HAVE YOU ANY QUESTIONS, COMMENTS

PROBLEMS or CONCERNS

Please be aware that the parish clerk works part time:-

Working Hours: Mon 10am- 12pm, 1-5 pm, Tue/Wed 1-4pm

Anyone wishing to: receive notice of meetings; give notice to speak at a meeting; view current Planning Applications or any Parish Council document, please contact by email:- [email protected]

The PC minutes are displayed on the 3 village notice boards and in the parish council website www.hosmparishcouncil.co.uk

Other important local information is also included in the newsletter, please take notice. Parish Council minutes (after sign off) and agendas will be available on the following website, along with diary dates, village news and announcements: www.hosmparishcouncil.co.uk Minutes are no longer included in Grapevine.

There are always recurring issues and these are shown below – it is your responsibility to report issues – the PC cannot be everywhere all the time. If you don’t let them know don’t complain!

Street-light and Pot-hole Problems

If you notice a street-light not working please either phone the number on the lamp-post, report it in the first instance via the Council website or email Maggie [email protected] with the name of the road, the location and the number on the lamp-post. The East Riding of Yorkshire Council is responsible for our street-lights and will rectify all problems. Pot-holes are the bane of our lives and the East Riding of Yorkshire Council is again responsible for repairing them, it appears that in cold weather they only make a temporary repair which is then done properly once the road surface is warmer. To report problems ring 01482 887700 and ask for Highways or report via the East Riding of Yorkshire Council website with exact location and if possible a picture, the picture seems to help get the repair done more quickly!!

Doggie Bag Dispensers and Litter Bins

The village is now well covered with bins. Parish Councillors are alarmed at the number of bags having to be bought and therefore paid for out of public funds. Would dog owners please make their own arrangements for buying doggie bags (bags such as nappy bags are very inexpensive from many stores) and use the doggie bag dispensers as a backup. The Parish Council has set up a maximum budget for doggie bags and you may therefore find dispensers empty at certain times, please be a responsible dog owner and pick up your pets droppings.

Recording of PC meetings, legislation allows residents to record meetings

Child Protection

The main message from experts is to listen to vulnerable people and always report suspicions, they will always be investigated, Ward Councillor Victoria Aitken has given out a “Golden number” to report suspicions 01482 395500

External grants

If any voluntary groups in the village need help in sourcing external grants please contact the Parish Council Clerk Maggie Fuller

Defibrillators

We have two defibs available 24/7 with one attached to the outside wall at the Village Hall entrance plus one on Margaret’s DIY external wall. If you have a medical emergency phone 999, the operator will give you the code for the defib box if it is needed, defibs if used quickly can help keep people alive until the emergency services get there

Severe weather,

The Parish Council has updated the village severe weather plan to make sure we are as ready as possible for bad weather.

Burial grounds,

The Church Graveyard and Parish Council Cemetery have the grass cut by our Parish Council handyman Pete who does a great job for the village. Lots of people have said that they would be willing to volunteer some time, the Parish Council is aware that some people do look after their family graves and this is perfectly acceptable to the Church and Parish Council. This is an important part of village life and the more people that wish to get involved the better

Parish Council Meetings

Residents are able to see the Parish Council in action at monthly meetings due to current legislation these are held by using ZOOM and residents can only attend by emailing the parish clerk for details. Everyone is welcome and if you wish to speak in the public session, please contact Maggie Fuller, clerk to the parish council at least five days before the meeting so that the parish council are aware ahead of the meeting.

“Surgeries” are currently suspended whilst the COVID 19 virus is still with us.

Anyone wishing to: receive notice of meetings and/or a copy of the agenda by email; give notice to speak at a meeting; wishes to view current planning applications or any PC document they can contact Maggie Fuller, Clerk to the PC email [email protected] . If you have any questions, problems or concerns you can contact either Maggie or any Parish/Ward Councillor, the list is shown below

PARISH COUNCIL MINUTES

Parish Council minutes are no longer included in Grapevine but can only be made available to residents after they have been signed off by the council as a true reflection of what was discussed. For example, the meeting for January was signed off at the February meeting and has been included in the March / April Grapevine. To know in advance why not attend a council meeting. Minutes are now available on the PC website www.hosmparishcouncil.co.uk

POLITE NOTICE RE THE CHURCH GRAVEYARD

Many of the public who use the green wheelie bin in the church graveyard may not be aware that it is not the council who empty this bin but myself as a volunteer. I try to keep on top of emptying the bin as much as possible but sometimes this is difficult at busy times. Therefore, I would greatly appreciate your assistance in this matter by taking as much rubbish home with you as possible. Also, the compost heap is ONLY for real flowers and greenery, not plastic flowers and wire wreaths. Thank you in advance for your kind co-operation. Helen Williamson

Holme Rovers Football Club

Writing again for the Grapevine is another step in our club getting back to some sort of normality during these difficult and strange times with the Covid 19 pandemic and at this point I would like to thank those within Holme Rovers [especially Sharon Gant] who have put so much time and effort in to making sure we are meeting guidelines from the Government, FA, Selby and District Junior Football League and the East Riding County League.

Like all financial going concerns we are experiencing very hard times with our income dropping dramatically. As a result of the Pandemic we have lost income from missing out on bingo, race night, match day and training day fees and running a summer soccer school and all this has resulted in a cash flow problem.

As regards expenses we again have Chaffer Grub issues and so have to commit spending monies on trying to curtail the damage by weeding, feeding etc. and just in the last three months we have spent over £3000 but thanks to the Football Foundation we received a grant of £2500. One of our age groups now requires goals of a size that we have none of and as for our under 15’s and our seniors that the goals they use are that old they now present us with a health and safety issue. The cost of these goals amounts to £4,723.20 and we received a grant again from the Football Foundation for £3600. With the shortfall of £1123.20 the football club wrote to the Parochial Charity and within two days the club received a cheque for £1124 so I would like to thank the Parochial Charity and the Football Foundation.

On the football front our Junior section continues to grow we now currently have under 4’s, 5’s and 6’s who train every Saturday morning and we have in the Selby and Junior Football League under 7’s, 8’s, 9’s, 10’s, 11’s, 13’s and 15’s. As regards the seniors we now only have one team who will be competing in the East Riding County League in the Premier Division.

On the weekend just gone [12th September] was the start of the Junior League season and we had over 100 children playing and training and it was great to see the whole of the Playing Field in use and there must have been well over 200 adults watching which again gave us some sort of normality in our lives. Again at this point I would like to thank all those who have contributed to allow this BUT we are still looking for more volunteers to come forward to help us [one particular area is in maintenance of the Playing Field] so if you are interested please do not hesitate to contact:-

Holme on Spalding Moor was featured in a article 13th September 2020 https://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/whats-on/whats-on- news/walks-around-hull-to-do-4510796

(Photograph from Wikipedia)

The following is the article in the newspaper:-

For those looking for a solid but shortish walk could do worse than this stroll round the surrounding countryside with a bit of aerobic exercise up the hill. The 2.5-mile walk begins along a track on Old Road, opposite Old Tatham which quickly takes you through open fields. Keep on the track until you get to a bridleway which is wide and flat and sheltered by trees either side. Like some other good cycle and walking routes across East Yorkshire, the bridleway was once a rail line connecting Market Weighton with Selby and was once part of a wider network bringing holidaymakers from South Yorkshire to the beaches of and Scarborough. You only follow the bridleway for around less than a mile before turning down a narrow track along the edge of a field. At one point you have to bend down to negotiate an archway of trees and it eventually takes you to the A614. You then need to cross and head up a steep lane which is signposted to the church. Be careful crossing as it is a busy road. Marching up the lane will get the heart rate racing but it is mercifully a short walk up to the church which looms into sight round the corner. Unfortunately, much of the church is hidden behind trees otherwise it would be more impressive. Once at the top you can explore the grounds and walk round the peaceful graveyard which must be one of the best resting places in East Yorkshire. Unfortunately, I was unable to enter the church due to the current pandemic restrictions but there are some interesting features when you can get inside, including a Jacobean pulpit and an 18th century gallery containing a barrel organ. It began to rain just as I reached the top so it had a bleak feel but the views of the Wolds to the east and the Vale of to the west were lovely (by James Campbell, HDM)

Our collection box is now in Margaret’s DIY on Runner End and donations can be left during her usual opening hours. Things we really need at the moment are tinned meat, fruit and coffee. Other items that are always welcome include cleaning items of all sorts, shampoo, pasta/cooking sauce (not Indian style) breakfast cereals, fruit juice and sanitary products. If you are lucky enough to be in a position to help, please do so. Thank you.

HOLME W.I.

Well as you can imagine we haven’t been able to meet since March. That was our last meeting, and very enjoyable it was with members making their own earrings watched over and tutored by jewellery maker Hillary.

All of us are sincerely hoping that we can get together in December but we are not holding a collective breath unless the present rules are relaxed.

We did, however, manage to supply all of our members with a gift bag each on three occasions in lieu of the fact that meetings and speakers could not go ahead. The first was a hollyhock plant, seeds for which were kindly supplied by one of our members. The idea being that when it flowers next year it will be in remembrance of the dreaded lockdown when we couldn’t meet. I am supposing here that 2021 will see us meeting again! The second was a gift of handmade chocolates from Butterflies Chocolates of Pocklington, and thirdly, a gift bag containing amongst other things a beautiful handmade mask, all made by one of our committee members and a lovely herbal tablet of soap, also made by one of our committee.

If you would like any information regarding our WI group, you can ring me, Sue, on 01430 861082.

Calling all you Classic Car owners!

Owning a classic car myself I wondered if there was any interest in forming a Holme upon Spalding Moor Noggin & Natter Club for other classic car owners.

I have about five owners who are very interested at the moment, but I do know there are more than a dozen classic cars located within the village. It is nothing heavy, just to meet up once a month to chat about cars. However there isn’t a meeting place or date decided on yet.

I do seem to remember a few years back a couple of young ladies tried to form a club then but sadly didn’t have much success so maybe I’ll be lucky this time.

We also have skills that we could share – I’m happy with old car electrics, others with trim with or mechanical issues and let’s face it we all have tales to tell about ownership.

Have a think and let me know by texting me, Karl Sheridan on 07530 649224 or 01430 861636

Would afternoons or evenings be better? All ages and sexes welcome, but either owning or having an interest in classic cars is mandatory!

Best regards Karl Sheridan, Trefoil Cottage, 2 Old Lea, Holme upon Spalding Moor, YO43 4BL

Just a Thought

October 2020 It feels really good to be in contact again, even at a social distance! Due to our age and his health issues, Chris and I began to self-isolate/lock-down/shield in early March. For us as well as most people in the village, life changed dramatically. Walking along the centre of the road in Back Lane in the first couple of weeks was eerie, dystopian, to say the least. There were no cars, not a sign of people and, worst of all, no sound of any children. Happily, that first phase only lasted a short while. As with many, our first thought was how we were going to get supplies. We did not have an official shielding letter but Chris had been so poorly that we did not want to risk visiting shops. This was when we said a big ‘Thank you’ to God for directing us to move to this village over fourteen years ago. So many kind people volunteered to help those in circumstances like us. Kind neighbours called and added our weekly shop to their own list. Others helped by going to the Post Office and sending parcels and cards we had prepared for family occasions and birthdays. Others collected our prescriptions every month. The butcher and a shop in a nearby village started delivery services and the fish van came to our door each week. On behalf of everyone in the same position as us, we would like to say how much your kindness and care has meant to us. May God bless you? Initially, we wondered what would happen with Chris’s various treatments. All clinics stopped but the district nurses still came three times each week to dress his poorly legs. They were equipped with P.P.E. and still showed care and concern even though rushed off their feet. They showed me how to do the dressings and, now that his legs have improved, they only visit once a week. Everyone in the N.H.S. and care homes deserve a medal! We have always kept in contact with our family but this changed rapidly in March. Visits for the first few months were out and we can only still meet occasionally in the garden with a hosepipe along its length to remind the smaller ones of social distancing. We discovered zoom meetings and were able to see each other and chat on line. This helped us when it came to birthdays and our celebrating our Emerald wedding anniversary-55years. Zoom was especially appreciated when we were able to see our new-born second great-grandson, Harvey, on the computer screen. I am not a big fan of technology but it does have its uses. Zoom has made a huge difference to us and many Christians throughout the country as we have been able to continue to join in services and meetings on line. This is not the same as being together to seek God’s praises with relish and gusto but it has kept us going and has been a means of helping each other when times were tough. It would seem, in this moment of time, that we are not out of the woods yet but it has been our experience that, by living in Holme on Spalding Moor, we have been looked after. I do hope that you too have found help and kindness as and when you have needed it. Sandra

The following list shows some of the crimes that have occurred in the previous month in your area.

 A secure vehicle was stolen from a driveway in Holme On Spalding Moor.  There was an attempt to break into a secure vehicle parked at a property in Hotham.  A secure property in was broken into, searched and items stolen.

2. Community Priorities.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team meets regularly with partners to ensure we have a multi-agency approach to local issues, individuals and problem solving. These meetings are attended by local partners, including Fire and Rescue Service, Youth and Family Support, Housing Officers, Environmental Health and the East Riding Anti-Social Behaviour Team, among others. We share information and resources to deal with local neighbourhood issues, in particular, those identified as causing the most harm in the community. High Visibility Patrols We have been patrolling the Howdenshire areas during our shifts. We are aware that there are many vulnerable people that live within the community and we want to reassure them that we are still here for you. You have probably seen us posting on Social Media on a regular basis as a way of keeping you all updated

3. Crime Reduction Advice

Keep your keys and vehicles safe and don’t be a “2 in 1” Victim

The term “2 in 1 burglary” is used when there are two offences in one, for example when vehicle keys have been stolen in order for offenders to take a car/van from outside a property.

These crimes have usually been committed overnight and often the offenders have gained access to a house by forcing entry or by even using cat flaps and letter boxes to put an instrument into the house to unhook car keys from key hangers near to doors.

Here are some simple security measures that can be taken:

 Keep all keys safe and out of sight. Never hang them near to doors where they could be taken through a letterbox or near an open window.

 Never leave house or car keys in an obvious place like a handbag or key cupboard.

 If you’ve got a garage, use it rather than leaving your vehicle on the driveway or the roadside.

 Always keep your vehicle locked and secured. If your car doesn't have an alarm/immobilizer then consider getting one fitted.

 Consider extra security such as a steering wheel lock. (Steering locks and gear level locks are often all that is needed to deter a thief as they simply don't want the hassle of breaking in and trying to get them undone.)

 Never leave any property in your car or van when it is unattended. It takes criminals seconds to smash a window and grab something. Tools and stock items should always be removed from the vehicle overnight – displaying signage to say 'No Tools Left in Vehicle'

It is clear that offenders are looking at locations and vehicles prior to coming back to commit the crimes. This could simply be someone looking around an area during the day, someone pretending to do door to door sales, or someone coming to your home on another pretext.

So, if you get a “cold caller” ask yourself:

1. Is the caller coming to my home in any way suspicious? 2. Is the caller paying attention to my car or asking me questions about it?

If so, give a call on the Non Emergency number 101 to report your concerns.

Officers from across the East Riding of Yorkshire area continue to engage in the prevention and detection of wildlife offences and poaching across the ward area. Officers will be using intelligence, new equipment and volunteers in helping to identify offenders and obtaining evidence to form prosecution cases. If you see people with dogs in fields, and if safe to do so, please ring 101 and report the incident.

5. Surgeries

We encourage everyone to follow the Government guidance. For this reason we will not be holding any more engagement events with our communities for the foreseeable future. Whilst we love seeing you, these events are non-essential in the current circumstances.

You will still see us out and about as we continue to do our job and keep our communities safe. As always there are a number of ways you can get in touch with us if you need us.

It was a shame because a lot of groundwork had taken place to organise this event. However, not all is lost as we plan to hold it during 2021.

The purpose of the day is to inform residents about the clubs and associations within the village and surrounding areas, general information, and health and safety that affect you

If you agreed to attend we still have your contact details and once we have set a new date you will be contacted. If you didn’t request a space and now feel you would benefit attending please email me at [email protected]

Western Wolds Men in Sheds

ABOUT MEN IN SHEDS - We are pleased to announce that we have managed to open our Shed to all members, in full compliance with Covid-19 restrictions.

There have been many initiatives created to tackle the problem of male loneliness and isolation, including the Men in Sheds Project. It is a global initiative that saw the first ‘shed’ open in 1998 in Australia, with several variations on this theme dating back to the 1970’s. It recognised and expanded on the theory of men retreating to their shed to tackle small household jobs or pursue hobbies.

For some, the ‘shed’ could become a place of occupation following redundancy, a distraction from illness or bereavement, somewhere to share skills and knowledge with others or simply meet, make new friends and chat over a tea or coffee. It’s for men of all ages not just retirees.

PREMISES AND CONTACT DETAILS

Our shed, known as Western Wolds Men in Sheds, includes a cafeteria, meeting/IT room, fully fitted workshop and wood store and is located at Oakes Farm, off Bulmer Lane, HOSM. It has now been operating now successfully for a year and has become a regular place for local men to meet. We are open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00am until 4:00pm. New members are always welcome. Please arrange for a visit to our shed to see our facilities and talk to our members, using any of the following contacts: E-mail: [email protected] Tel: 07958 556 888 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/westernwoldsmisofficial/
