VII. CIRCULATION OF WEEKLIES AND OTHER PERIODICALS 7.1.1. The Indian Press, especially comprising weeklies, monthlies and other periodicals, has shown significant growth in recent years, which has been reflected elaborately in different statistical tables from 7.1 to 7.9 in this Chapter. The periodicals other than dailies & tri-biweekly formed the important part of circulation in Print Media. It highlights and covers diverse topics such as finance, religion and philosophy, medicine, current affairs, fiction, art and science, sports, women power and children in different languages. For the current financial year 2013-14, a total number of 12,744 annual statements were submitted by the publishers online in respect of their other periodicals and their claimed circulation figure rose to 18,54,03,183 copies per publishing day (Table 7.2). Although a nil growth rate was recorded in online e-filing of annual statements by weeklies and other periodicals, yet a growth of 3.28% was recorded in their claimed circulation compared to the year of 2012-13. 7.1.2. Among the periodicals, Weeklies dominated the scene by bagging a total number of 7,033 publications out of 12,744 publications which filed online annual statements for 2013- 14 and in circulation also remained at the top by claiming 11,20,05,740 out of 18,54,03,183 copies per publishing day, followed by Monthlies 3,425 with circulation of 4,58,85,746 copies, Fortnightlies 1,855 with circulation of 2,27,59,091 copies, Quarterlies 201 with circulation of 18,07,667 copies and Annuals 55 with 15,67,610 copies. The remaining 175 publications were of other periodicities with a claimed circulation of 13,77,329 copies per publishing day. (Table 7.2) LANGUAGE WISE 7.2.1. While going through Annual Statements online filed for the year 2013-14, it has been observed that periodicals were brought out in all principal languages of the country. Language wise analysis states that Hindi periodicals have maintained a lead with 7,968 publications followed by English (1,183), Gujarati (752), Urdu (514), Telugu (399), Marathi (320), Bengali (117), Malayalam (114) and Tamil (113). (Table 7.3) 7.2.2. In circulation also, Hindi periodicals maintains its lead with 9,98,66,264 copies per publishing day followed by English (3,11,22,333), Gujarati (72,67,826), Urdu (72,97,150), Malayalam (63,89,553) and Odia (49,23,712). (Table 7.3) STATE/UT WISE 7.3.1. Uttar Pradesh continued to maintain the lead with 3,138 periodicals; Delhi came second with 1,743 followed by Uttaranchal with 1,547, Madhya Pradesh with 1,497, Rajasthan with 1,075, Gujarat with 815 and Maharashtra with 673. Uttar Pradesh remained on top position in circulation terms also with a claim of 4,91,33,651 copies per publishing day followed by Delhi with 3,68,58,886 copies, Maharashtra with 1,13,31,891 copies, Madhya Pradesh with 1,32,81,317 copies and Uttrakhand with 1,06,81,747 copies per publishing day. (Table 7.4) CONTENTS 7.4.1. The periodicals have been classified into 38 categories according to their contents as per total number of annual statements received for the year 2013-14. 7.4.2. The periodicals which cover major topics fall under the category of NCA (News and Current Affairs 12,364), followed by AOC (71), EDU (61), CHI (13), SCI (11), FAL (11), WOM (9), FIL (8) etc. (Table 7.5) 7.4.3. Weeklies and Monthlies maintained the leading trend in terms of coverage on matters pertaining to News and Current Affairs with 7,033 and 3,424 publications in numbers respectively. (Table 7.5) 7.4.4. Periodicals published in all major Indian languages except Santhali and Konkani covering topics on news and current affairs. 7.4.5. Hindi periodicals continued to dominate the scene in the category of News and Current Affairs with 7857 publications followed by English with 1022 publications. They continued to remain on top leaving aside rest of other categories such as topic on social welfare, religion and philosophy, literary and culture, etc. (Table 7.6) GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS 7.5.1. There were 43 Government Publications, which filed annual statements for the year 2013-14, out of which 29 belonged to the Central and 14 to the State Governments. (Table 7.7) 7.5.2. Out of the 43 Government Publications, monthlies dominated the scene having 20 in number followed by weeklies, dailies, fortnightlies and quarterlies having 09, 04, 07, and 01 publication respectively. Remaining 02 were of other periodicities. (Table 7.7) 7.5.3. Language wise, the largest number of government publications reported to be published in Hindi (12), followed by English (08), Urdu (05), Bi-lingual (05), Telugu (04), Bengali (02), Gujarati (02) and Malayalam (01). (Table 7.8) Circulation of Weeklies and Other Periodicals 233 CENTRAL GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS 7.6.1. There were 29 Central Government Publications; 08 in English, 09 in Hindi, 03 in Urdu, 03 in Bilingual, 02 in Telugu, and 01 each in Kannada, Gujarati, Odia and Marathi. (Table 7.8) 7.6.2. Out of the 29 Central Government Publications; 21 were published from Delhi followed by 02 each from A.P. and Uttrakhand and 01 each from Maharashtra, Gujarat,, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. (Table 7.9) STATE GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS 7.7.1. There were 14 State Government Publications. Out of them 03 were in Hindi, 02 each were in Bengali, Bi-Lingual, Urdu and Telugu, 01 each in Gujarati, Malayalam, and Tamil. (Table 7.8) 7.7.2. State-wise study shows that, 02 publications each from A.P., Delhi, Tamil Nadu, U.P. and West Bengal filed their annual statement for 2013-2014.
