5Th and 8Th Grade Promotion Celebrations

June 2021

Congratulations to #WissNation!

Every student, staff member and family member in Wiss Nation deserves a round of applause for the successful completion of the 2020-2021 school year. Managing the school year within the constraints of the pandemic challenged us in ways we never imagined, but in true Wiss Nation style, our community persevered and we are proud. We hope the summer is relaxing and rejuvenating and look forward to seeing everyone in the 2021-2022 school year. Best wishes to our seniors on all of their future endeavors! We have a keepsake section for the Class of 2021 on pages 12-20.

May Mystery Madness at the Elementary Schools

This spring, our elementary teachers and students had the opportunity to participate in a "May Mystery Madness" tournament. In this friendly competition, classes of students played against each other via Teams in 20-question style games. In grades K-2, students had to use critical thinking, listening, communication and collaboration to guess each other's Mystery Animal. In grades 3-5, students used the same skills plus geography knowledge to guess each other's Mystery State. The tournament was set up via brackets, and classes competed against each other to determine the ultimate WSD grade level winner. Congrats to the winners!

Commemorative Section

Wiss Nation congratulates the Class of 2021 - a class of many firsts. You are the first graduating class to complete a full school year during a pandemic; the first class to have a combination of 100% virtual, hybrid and in-person instruction; the first class to have an outdoor senior prom and no junior prom; the first class to have a Seniors Only Day and cap decorating for commencement; the first class to conduct extracurriular activities via Zoom; the first class required to wear face masks and social distance the entire school year and the first class to have a commemorative newsletter section to highlight the challenges and successes of this unprecedented school year. We hope this is a reminder of everything you are capable of and that you will always be an important part of the Wiss Nation community. Best wishes on all of your future endeavors!

Scholarship Night and Senior Awards

On June 4th, WHS held its annual Scholarship Night recognizing the 145 scholarship recipients, followed by Senior Awards Night on June 7th - held in the WHS Stadium for the first time. We recognized more than 60 seniors for their achievements, including academic and scholastic accomplishments, community service work, athletic talents, and outstanding student leadership.

CLICK ON OUR ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT PROGRAM to view the full list of scholarship recipients, senior award winners and student listing for the Class of 2021. Seniors and families can watch all of the senior celebration ceremonies on the WSD YOUTUBE CHANNEL. First Outdoor Prom

The Class of 2021 was the first to enjoy an outdoor prom - a “Night Under the Stars!” Our 300 seniors gathered at the FUGE for an evening that included Senior Superlatives, dinner, ice cream and donut bars, a laser light show and music from a playlist compiled by the Senior Class Officers. Neon party sticks made the evening festive and Senior Class party cups capped off the evening as a token of remembrance for each senior. First Seniors Only Day and Senior Picnic

The Class of 2021 had an amazing Seniors Only Day - the first ever. They celebrated their future plans wearing their college gear, ate lunch with each other in the stadium, and enjoyed spending time with their friends, teachers and staff. The event kicked off Senior Spirit Week.

Following graduation rehearsal on June 9th, the Class also enjoyed a Senior Picnic with food trucks, games and yearbook signing.

Victory Laps

A major silver lining was being able to resume Victory Laps. Following graduation practice, all seniors did a lap through WMS, then traveled by bus to the elementary school they attended. Wiss Nation cheered them on with handmade signs, fist bumps and enthusiastic congratulations.

Lower Gwynedd Elementary Hats off to the Class of 2021: Commencement Highlights

Valedictorian Alex Yum gave an unforgettable speech comparing making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to the educational journey of our students. Bravo Alex!

“It sounds silly, but peanut butter and jelly sandwiches can teach us a little bit about ourselves. Just as we may approach the sandwich-making process differently from the person next to us, each of our journeys for the past 13 years has been different, reflecting our varying interests and personalities. And just as each PB&J irrefutably has peanut butter and jelly, as Wiss students, we have experiences that we all share. Our differences are what make us individuals, ready to face the world in our own separate ways. Our similarities are what make us Wissahickon Trojans, forever and always.” Olivia Welsh, Graduation Speaker, encouraged the class to focus on the future. Superintendent Dr. Crisfield reminded “This has been an especially students of how they embody the 3 Cs - tough year for us, but we Community, Compromise and Civility - and have a special opportunity. the 3 Ps - Perseverence, Piose and Pride. This dispirited world of Teams calls and air hugs, of “Community. If we’ve learned nothing else sickness and struggle, is ours during this global pandemic, we now know to bring back to life. Rather we need each other more than ever. We need than looking with nostalgia to be a community, not a conglomeration of upon a less than ideal year, look with hope upon our communities. You members of the Class of future. I have confidence in our ability to change the 2021 have modeled for us adults how to do trajectory of this world because I have watched you that. You support each other, you stand up all grow and achieve successes alongside me.” for each other, and you care about each other. That is community.” Accompanied by the WHS Camerata, Principal Dr. Blair told students “2020-2021 has been a lot – or extra, as you all say. We can choose to want to cancel or eliminate 2020 and 2021 from our lives, if we want. And that choice would make sense and would be easy to understand because you have not been short on challenges. But, let’s flip the script and look at 2020 and 2021 as the most important year of them all – the one where the real learning and real growing happened. The one when we banded together. The one when we saw ourselves and those around us differently. The one when we learned what really matters and what we want our priorities to be.”

The Class of 2021 enjoyed our first ever graduation cap decorating - a great idea suggested by our Senior Class officers to make commencement fun and memorable! NEXT STEPS: Class of 2021
