The methods illustrated in the video and described in this report sup- port the methods published in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Methods for Measuring the Acute Toxicity of Effluents to Freshwater and Marine Organisms, Fifth Edition (2002a) and Short-term Methods for Estimating the Chronic Toxicity of Effluents and Receiving Waters to Freshwater Organisms, Fourth Edition (2002b), referred to as the Acute and Chronic Methods Manuals, respectively. The video and this report provide details on setting up and maintaining cultures based on the expertise of the personnel at the EPA’s Mid-Continent Ecology Division (MED) in Duluth, Minnesota (EPA-Duluth). More information can also be found in Guidelines for the Culture of Fathead Minnows (Pimephales promelas) for Use in Toxicity Tests (EPA, 1987). This report and its accompanying video are part of a series of training videos produced by EPA’s Office of Wastewater Management. -

(19) In Part C, the following Chapters are added: "C.47 Fish, Early-life Stage Toxicity Test INTRODUCTION 1. This test method is equivalent to OECD test guideline (TG) 210 (2013). Tests with the early-life stages of fish are intended to define the lethal and sub-lethal effects of chemicals on the stages and species tested. They yield information of value for the estimation of the chronic lethal and sub-lethal effects of the chemical on other fish species. 2. Test guideline 210 is based on a proposal from the United Kingdom which was discussed at a meeting of OECD experts convened at Medmenham (United Kingdom) in November 1988 and further updated in 2013 to reflect experience in using the test and recommendations from an OECD workshop on fish toxicity testing, held in September 2010 (1). PRINCIPLE OF THE TEST 3. The early-life stages of fish are exposed to a range of concentrations of the test chemical dissolved in water. Flow-through conditions are preferred; however, if it is not possible semi-static conditions are acceptable. For details the OECD guidance document on aquatic toxicity testing of difficult substances and mixtures should be consulted (2). The test is initiated by placing fertilised eggs in test chambers and is continued for a species-specific time period that is necessary for the control fish to reach a juvenile life-stage. Lethal and sub-lethal effects are assessed and compared with control values to determine the lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC) in order to determine the (i) no observed effect concentration (NOEC) and/or (ii) ECx (e.g. -

MADAGASCAR: the Wonders of the “8Th Continent” a Tropical Birding Set Departure
MADAGASCAR: The Wonders of the “8th Continent” A Tropical Birding Set Departure November 3—28, 2013 Guide: Ken Behrens All photos taken during this trip. TOUR SUMMARY Madagascar has long been a core destination for Tropical Birding, and with last year’s opening of a satellite office in the country, we have further solidified our expertise in the “Eighth Continent.” This was another highly successful set-departure tour to this special island. It included both the Northwestern Endemics Pre-Trip at the start and the Helmet Vanga extension to the Masoala Peninsula at the end. Although Madagascar poses some logistical challenges, especially in the form of the national airline Air Madagascar, we had no problems on this tour, not even a single delayed flight! The birding was great, with 196 species recorded, including almost all of the island’s endemic birds. As usual, the highlight was seeing all five of the incredible ground-rollers, from the roadrunner-like Long-tailed of the spiny forest to the wonderful rainforest-dwelling Scaly. There was a strong cast of vangas, including Helmet, Bernier’s, and Sickle-billed. In fact, we saw every member of the family save the mysterious Red-tailed Newtonia which is only regularly seen in the far south. As normal, the couas were also a favorite. From the shy and beautiful Red-breasted of Madagascar Set Departure Tour Nov. 3-28, 2013 the eastern rainforest to the huge Giant Coua of the dry western forest, we were looking for and at couas virtually every day! The bizarre mesites form a Malagasy endemic family, and we had superb extended views of all three members of the family. -

Long-tailed Ground Roller (tour participant Rienk Nieuwland) ULTIMATE MADAGASCAR 9 – 26/30 OCTOBER 2018 LEADER: CHRIS KEHOE Our recent tour to the remarkable island of Madagascar saw us explore the rainforests of the east, the dry forests and wetlands of the north and the amazing spiny forests and coastlines of the west. Members of all of Madagascar’s endemic bird families were seen, including all five fabulous Ground Rollers, all three Mesites, three species of Asity, the spectacular Cuckoo Roller and a host of Vangas, not least the incredible Helmet Vanga, and Malagasy Warblers. In addition, we saw all of the extant Coua species and many other wonderful birds such as Crab Plovers, Red-tailed Tropicbirds, Madagascan Ibises and Malagasy Sacred Ibises, Madagascan Harriers, White-browed and Madagascan Owls, Madagascan and Collared Nightjars and Madagascan Fish Eagles. Lemurs also features strongly on the tour and we had multiple encounters with the incomparable Indri, great to see and hear, plus the likes of Coquerel’s and Verreaux’s Sifakas, Brown lemurs, Woolly Lemurs, Bamboo Lemurs, dazzling Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs, noisy Sportive Lemurs and diminutive Mouse and Dwarf Lemurs – not to mention the most iconic of them all, the delightful Ring-tailed Lemur.
