Bei der Suche nach der je eigenen Iden - tität spielen Musik und Sprache eine herausragende Rolle. Ein kleiner Ausschnitt dieses breiten Themenfeldes findet sich in diesem Musikforum. Die Kraft der Sprache und die Kraft der Musik werden in ihren Wirkungen oft unter- schätzt. Nicht bei denen, die diese Kräfte bewusst aktivieren oder instrumentalisieren, sondern bei jenen, die mit diesem Kulturgut unbekümmert bis achtlos umgehen. Im digitalen Zeitalter der Ausdifferenzierung und der Echokammern geht nicht nur mehr und mehr der Blick für Zusammenhänge verloren, sondern auch zunehmend die indi- viduelle wie gesellschaftliche Wertzumessung für diese grundlegenden Elemente menschlichen Zusammenlebens. Der Koalitionsvertrag der vielleicht künftigen Bundesregierung weist für die Bereiche „Bildung und Kultur“ – innen- wie außenpolitisch – erfreulicherweise Eindeutigkeit auf die Wechselbeziehungen von innen und außen und die zentrale Rolle von Bildung und Kultur für den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt auf. Die Gefäße für diesen Kom- munikationsprozess, wie die zivilgesellschaftlichen Einrichtungen oder die Deutsche Welle, werden für die kommenden Herausforderungen im Hinblick auf ihre Rahmen- bedingungen gut aufgestellt sein. Entscheidend wird sein, Herzen und Köpfe vor Ort zu erreichen, Haltungen zu zeigen und zu prägen für den Wert kreativen Schaffens – als Ausdruck der Freiheit der Künste wie des Individuums in der Verantwortung für das Gemeinwohl. Musik und Sprache als lebendiger Ausdruck dessen, was uns ausmacht und bewegt. Musik und Sprache als wertvolles Kulturgut, das mit dazu beitragen kann, die Kom- passnadel gesellschaftlichen Wandels immer wieder neu zu justieren. One of the main things that makes hip hop unique from other genres is the emphasis on the lyricist. While many other genres will have a drummer, guitarist, bassist, or keyboardist, hip hop is different because most songs are not crafted in the traditional way of a band putting music together. Because of this, the genre tends to focus on the lyrics.

Lawsuits over sampling in rap music forced producers to rethink the ways they made music while crack cocaine and the War on Drugs wreaked havoc in urban communities across the nation, as it did in the Clan’s home borough of Staten Island, New York. Before the formation of the group, Gary “GZA” Grice, had managed to land a recording contract as a solo artist, but his marketing was mismanaged and his career stagnated. He returned in 1992 as one of the nine member collective, who billed themselves as kung fu movie buffs melding low-fi, eerie productions with realistic raps about ghetto life. His love of his father’s records and fascination with electronics would lead him down the road to the hip hop movement. He would later become a key innovator. Flash’s involvement in hip hop affected not only him, but also the sound of hip hop. Grandmaster Flash, also known as Joseph Saddler, was born January 1, 1958. In 20 years time he would become one of the most influential hip hop pioneers: one of the “three kings” of hip hop (Chang, 2005; 90). According to Grandmaster Flash’s official website, Flash is “responsible for inventing the musical genre called Hip Hop.” While not all would claim Flash to be the creator of hip hop, many consider him the first to really use the turntable as an instrument. Flash used the turntable for more than playing breaks, he manipulated the music: he used the turntable as his tool for creating music. Early on, Flash was interested in electronics. He would take apart anything from a hair dryer to old car stereos, and then attempt to reassemble the pieces. In a Billboard interview with Rashaun Hall, Grandmaster Flash tells of his parents reaction to his fiddling was that they “decided to send me to school so I could begin to identify what these internal parts all did.” While going to school in the day, Flash was going to the local block parties at night to see Kool Herc performe.

    WHAT IS HIP HOP? The Four Elements of Hip Hop Hip hop is music — and a culture, encompassing speech, styles of dress, art, poetry and dancing, as well as "rapping." Purists have narrowed the major components of the culture into four loosely defined categories: deejaying, emceeing, breaking and graffiti art. Deejaying Jamaican immigrant Kool Herc, inspired by the “dubbing” and “toasting” from his native home, is credited with introducing deejaying to New York. Early New York DJs improvised, using a pair of turntables as a makeshift instrument when funding for school music programs were cut. Later Afrika Bambataa evolved the art of deejaying. MCing, or Emceeing MCs have become a centralized figure in hip hop. Commercially, MCs are known as rappers. During hip hop’s early days, MCs played a supporting role, accompanying the deejay and carrying crates of records. They used a microphone to talk over breakbeats and publicize their own neighborhoods while the deejay spun records. As competition for this position increased, MCs engaged in one-upmanship, boasting of their greatness in the face of inner city economic despair. Breaking Also known as b-boying, the dances that accompany the music have many influences. Kids in diverse New York neighborhoods were exposed to Eastern martial arts, tap dancing, gymnastics, salsa, Afro-Cuban and Native American dances. In the late ‘90’s b-boys and b- girls integrated moves from capoeira, a 16th century fighting dance developed by Brazilian slaves preparing for resistance. Graffiti Urban graffiti, using spray cans to create stylized murals and “tags” to create art in public spaces, gave kids a means of self-expression and a chance to spread political messages.

In this series of paintings and collages, Jay “One” Ramier retrieves and reinterprets the first hip hop song that was also a work of social criticism. “The Message” performed by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, feat. Melle Mel and Duke Bootee, describes social disarray, violence, decadence, alienation and self-harm. Released in 1982, it was widely recognized as one of the most iconic songs of late 20th century, and still speaks to the social reality of today. In “The Message,” hip hop’s tone, formerly celebratory, becomes one of desperate urgency: “Don’t push me ‘cause I’m close to the edge I’m trying not to lose my head It’s like a jungle sometimes It makes me wonder how I keep from goin’ under” By crystallizing elements of the song and its video into still images, Jay Ramier invites us to pause and consider in detail the harsh realities and evocative expressions of urban life. In this moment, hip hop’s mission changes. Jay Ramier has always stated his love for music, which he considers inspirational and the mightiest of all art forms: “I like the way music, like the holy spirit, can take possession of one’s soul, either by the power of the lyrics or the enchantment of hypnotic melodies or sounds.” The video cuts between frenetic New York City streets, South Bronx residents strolling or playing, elderly people lying in the streets, and abandoned lots of rubble.
