PUBLIC OPINION IN OLYMPIC CITIES: FROM Article BIDDING TO RESTROSPECTION Harry H. Hiller, Richard A. Wanner. In: Urban affairs review, 2017, pp. 1-32. Whereas traditionally hosting the Olympics was viewed as a top-down decision with little public input, public opinion is becoming more important in assessing and evaluating the merits of hosting the Games. HOW TO BID BETTER FOR THE OLYMPICS: A Article PARTICIPATORY MEGA-EVENT PLANNING STRATEGY FOR LOCAL LEGACIES Eva Kassens-Noor, John Lauermann. In: Journal of the American planning association, vol. 83, no. 4, 2017, pp. 335-345. Several cities have canceled their Olympic bids in recent years because of local protests and referenda. Bidding cities now face a new political reality as they debate whether a bid is in the best interests of local stakeholders. This paper presents a case study of Boston's ultimately unsuccessful bid to be the U.S. city selected to host the 2024 Olympic Games. The authors ask whether, how, and why Boston 2024 changed its planning approach from the 1st to the 2nd bid to respond to significant protests over its failure to meaningfully involve stakeholders, identify specific legacies, and provide accurate cost details.

MA 28465

EL ECOSISTEMA OLÍMPICO EN FACEBOOK Report DURANTE LOS JUEGOS OLÍMPICOS DE RÍO 2016 : ACTORES, CONTENIDOS Y PARTICIPACIÓN DE LOS USUARIOS José Manuel Pardo Gila. Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2017, 321 p. The IOC Olympic Studies Centre (OSC) supported a part of this project through the PhD Research Grant Programme 2017. This dissertation analyses the activity generated by the main Olympic actors and users' participation on Facebook during Rio 2016, through techniques and computational procedures based on big data. From the content analysis of 38,037 publications disseminated by sports organizations such as the International Olympic Committee, National Olympic Committees and International Federations, among others, this work reveals the particularities of Facebook as the engagement in relation to format, nature and typology of contents. The reconstruction of the dominant stories, based on the participation of the various publics, allowed inquiry into the ‘glocalisation’ of the Olympic Movement via the most popular social networking site in the world, and to discover if Facebook has capacity to create realities independently of the traditional mass media during a global event such as the Olympic Games. The methods developed are complemented by interviews with professionals from social media and the Olympic Movement. READ MORE

1.2.5 BEIJING 2008

CHINESE SUBJECTIVITIES AND THE BEIJING OLYMPICS Gladys Pak Lei Chong. Rowman & Littlefield, 2017, 283 p. Chinese Subjectivities and the Beijing Olympics develops the Foucauldian concept of productive power through examining the ways in which the Chinese government tried to mobilize the population to embrace its Olympic project through deploying various sets of strategies and tactics. It argues that the multifaceted strategies, tactics, and discourses deployed by the Chinese authorities sustain an order of things and values in such a way that drive individuals to commit themselves actively to the goals of the party-state. This book examines how these processes of subjectification are achieved by zooming in on five specific groups of the population:

athletes, young Olympic volunteers, taxi drivers, Chinese citizens targeted by place-making projects, and the population. In doing so it probes critically into the role of individuals and how they take on the governmental ideas to become responsible autonomous subjects. MA 28463

1.2.6 BARCELONA 1992 | BARCELONE 1992

THE GLOBAL CULTURAL CAPITAL: ADDRESSING THE CITIZEN AND PRODUCING THE CITY IN BARCELONA Mari Paz Balibera. Palgrave Macmillan, 2017, 311 p. This book argues the crucial role of culture and cultural policies in defining the notion of urban citizenship in Barcelona since 1979. Through analysis of official documents, municipal publicity campaigns, sport – including the Olympic Games and Barcelona F.C – and film, Balibrea makes sense of the city as a global cultural destination and reveals how such transformation impacts local inhabitants. Scrutinizing municipal discourses on culture from the late 1970s, this interdisciplinary work unveils how ideas of the function and nature of citizenship articulate changing definitions of

the city, from model to brand. Over the course of topics such as: tourism, social democracy and urban regeneration, Balibrea constructs an original argument for how the Barcelona image mobilizes neoliberal fantasies of subject transformation. A wide-ranging study, this book will be of great interest to scholars of urban geography, sociology and cultural studies. MA 28462

MA 28478

1.2.8 BERLIN 1936

HONOUR AND DIGNITY: THE PERU CASE AT THE Article 1936 OLYMPIC GAMES IN BERLIN Sérgio Settani Giglio. In: The international journal of the history of sport, Ahead of print, 1 November 2017, pp. 1-12. The 1936 Olympic Games are considered to be the explicit union of sports and politics. Many studies have analysed the accomplishments of at Hitler’s Olympics. However, football provides another collision between sports and politics at the same Olympic Games, which also impacts the debate regarding the relationship between sports and politics. That relationship is rarely studied. Football had been out of the Olympic programme of the 1932 Los Angeles Games and returned to the programme for the 1936 Berlin Games. However, on its return there was an incident in the match between Peru and in the second round of the tournament. It all started when a spectator invaded the field and kicked an Austrian athlete. The match was restarted and Peru won the game in overtime. After the game the Austrians formalized a protest and FIFA set up a European committee to review the case. Through historical analysis, from official documents and newspapers of that time, this episode showed two points: that FIFA was a Eurocentric entity; and that sports and politics go together, after all, since in the rescheduled new game, Peru, as a protest and in a demand for dignity, withdrew its entire delegation from the Olympic Games. OLYMPIC PRIDE - AMERICAN PREJUDICE Deborah Riley Draper… [et al.]. Coffee Bluff Pictures, 2016, 1 DVD-R (79 min.). In 1936, 18 African-American athletes- dubbed the "black auxiliary" by Hitler - participated in the Berlin Olympic Games, defying Nazi Aryan supremacy and Jim crow racism. Despite their achievements, winning hearts and medals in Berlin, the world forgot all of them except one, Jesse Owens. "Olympic Pride, American Prejudice" is the story of the other 17. The film follows the athletes from the attempted on the 1936 Olympics to their triumph at the Games and then to their unceremonious return to America. The film restores these mostly little known athletes who changed the course of sports and the fight for civil rights to their proper place in history. DA 273

BRAZILIAN ORGANIZATION FOR COMBATING Article TERRORISM DURING THE RIO 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES AND PARALYMPIC GAME Alessandro Visacro. In: Military review, September-October 2017, pp. 94-104. Major international public events, by their very nature, combine extreme vulnerability with extensive media exposure. These factors alone are enough to create favorable conditions for the convergence of a number of normally diffuse threats— primarily nonstate actors operating domestically and transnationally, ranging from what are known in Brazil as antisystemic movements to extremist organizations. In order to share some of the lessons learned and best practices, this article presents a brief analysis of security provisions during the 2016 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in , focusing primarily on combating terrorism—a topic that, due to its sensitive character and growing importance, has demanded increasing engagement by the military. OLYMPIC AGENDA 2020: MIDWAY REPORT International Olympic Committee. 2017, 91 p. The implementation of the 40 recommendations of Olympic Agenda 2020, the IOC’s strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic Movement, began in 2015, almost immediately after its unanimous approval at the 127th IOC Session in December 2014. This document, developed in keeping with Olympic Agenda 2020’s call for increased transparency and accountability, is a status report on the implementation since its adoption. It details action taken and action planned before 2020 to fully implement all the recommendations. The trajectory of progress is well established. As of 1 September 2017, the IOC had taken action on all 40 recommendations and more than half are implemented or close to completion. These accomplishments have been possible thanks to the active participation of all constituents, stakeholders and partners of the Olympic Movement, including the United Nations and a number of NGOs that support the mission and values of the Movement. THE EARLY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN UNESCO Article AND THE IOC: CONSIDERATIONS – CONTROVERSIES – COOPERATION Caroline Meier. In: Diagoras: International academic journal on Olympic studies, vol. 1, 2017, pp. 229-248. Today, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation is "the United Nations' lead agency for physical education and sport". It runs several projects and initiatives and it closely cooperates with various international organisations that are engaged in the field of sport and physical education. The questions as to how and why sport became part of UNESCO's programme and who were the involved participants, however, remain unanswered in academic literature. This article shows that after the introduction of the idea to include sport and physical education in its programme by individual sports officials, with members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) playing a key role, UNESCO had to overcome severe controversies, jealousies and power struggles when trying to position itself in the field. Particularly, the relationship between UNESCO and the IOC was difficult – the general problems of international sports, and consequently the IOC, were mirrored in the process of UNESCO's early involvement in sport.. CHARLES DE COUBERTIN'S 'SPORTS Article ALLEGORY/THE CROWNING OF THE ATHLETES: NEW INSIGHTS' Natalia Camps Y Wilant. In: Diagoras: International academic journal on Olympic studies, vol. 1, 2017, pp. 209-228. Charles de Coubertin, the father of the founder of the modern Olympic Games, was a successful painter in France in the second part of the nineteenth century. One of his paintings is exhibited in the Olympic Museum in Lausanne and appears often in Olympic history publications. In most of the published works, however, the authors did not include information about the painting; they only published the reproduction. Although the works do not explain the painting's content, the facts seem sufficient to consider the painting a well-known part of Olympic history. This paper explores the painting's contribution to Olympic history and applies the art historical method of iconological analysis (Panofsky, 1955) to relate the painting's content to different contexts, such as historic events or the artist's personal background. 4.1 GOVERNANCE OF THE OLYMPIC MOVEMENT | GOUVERNANCE DU MOUVEMENT OLYMPIQUE

FROM OLYMPIC ADMINISTRATION TO OLYMPIC GOVERNANCE Emmanuel Bayle... [et al.]. Routledge, 2018, 128 p. Lausanne, the Swiss city IOC (International Olympic Committee) President honoured with the title "Olympic capital" in 1994, is now the administrative capital of world sport. The past century has presented Olympism with many challenges and that continues to be the case today; the issues may have changed, but they are no less numerous. Controversies over phony amateurism, the two Chinas and the creation of a modern Olympia have been resolved, only to be replaced by questions of governance, compliance, strategy, responsible management, the size of the Games, the scarcity of bids and new forms of doping and corruption. All these themes are examined in the articles that make up this book published about 100 years after the establishment of the IOC’s headquarters in Lausanne. This book was originally published as a special edition of "Sport in society". MA 28469

This critique enables necessary conversation on the appropriateness of Olympism in contemporary times, the definitions of Olympism, Olympism praxis, and Olympic education and its pedagogies. This arguably, positions Olympism as one of the most controversial and debated topics within the human movement field. In “The athlete's dilemma: sacrificing health for wealth and fame”, John Weston

Parry examines the health-related transgressions and hot-topic issues in America’s top spectator sports, particularly in football, , hockey, soccer, cycling, tennis, and Olympic competitions. Parry delves into the unique health risks that pertain to each individual sport and scrutinizes how the various leagues and organizations have handled these issues. Controversies and scandals surrounding elite athletes are also included, highlighting the need for changes in how sports are governed and regulated in the United States and worldwide. From football and soccer players returning to the field too soon after concussions to Olympic athletes using performance-enhancing substances, “The athlete’s dilemma” provides a broad perspective on the health risks prevalent in sports and what can be done to reduce these risks in the future. Accessibly written yet carefully researched, this book will be of interest to athletes of all levels, sports fans, academics, and health professionals. MA 28459

7.1 GOVERNANCE | GOUVERNANCE

UNDERSTANDING AND REDEFINING THE ROLE OF Report MEN IN ACHIEVING GENDER EQUITY IN SPORT LEADERSHIP Popi Sotiriadou, Donna de Haan, Annelies Knoppers. Griffith University, 2017, 50 p. Advanced Olympic Research Grand Programme 2016-2017. A common approach to gender balance in governance has been through the creation of women’s groups/commissions and the use of gender targets/quotas. This approach may perpetuate the idea that gender equality is an issue that only affects women and does not explicitly encourage men to be involved in changing a male-dominated governance culture. The purpose of this study was to explore the role men have, and can play in working towards gender equity in sport governance. We focused on two sports and two countries that have announced their support for and engagement with gender balance in governance. We drew on organisational documents and semi-structured interviews with 22 men and 12 women from eight organisations involved in sport governance at the national or international level. Data suggests that male board members primarily focus on creating gender equality. They actively recruit women to fill positions but there is little evidence that they do much to change the context/culture in which that governance takes place. Women argued for more active involvement of men in enabling a transformation towards gender equity, that is, a gender responsive shift in governance culture. READ MORE

Such a risk-assessment will lead to recommendations aimed directly at EU MS or European authorities, but it will analyse betting as a global activity especially given its transnational nature. RAISING THE AMERICAN FLAG VIA OLYMPIC MEDIA Article CONSUMPTION: QUANTITATIVELY EXPLORING THE ETHICS OF U.S. NATIONALISM AND SPORT SPECTATORSHIP Andrew C. Billings, Kenon A. Brown, Natalie B. Devlin. In: Diagoras: International academic journal on Olympic studies, vol. 1, 2017, pp. 11-34. While the 2016 Summer Olympics was still the most watched program all 17 nights during NBC's coverage, the decline in overall television viewership could be a sign of audience migration to other platforms to consume Olympic content. Because understanding if motives for displaying national identity and motives for spectating sport could play a role in the consumption of Olympic media across televisual, print and digital platforms, a survey of 257 respondents was conducted, and structural equation modelling was used to determine the relationships among national identity motives, sport spectatorship motives and Olympic media consumption. The world of sports is a reflection of the world of politics. It is becoming increasingly multipolar with the emerging states hosting mega sporting events. Firstly, the article problematizes the concept of multipolarity and, secondly, globalisation by questioning whether the Olympic Games reinforce national identities and promote national interests by using Olympic diplomacy as a soft power tool. In doing so, the article explores the correlation between the changes in international affairs and the hosting of and participation at the Olympic Games by emerging states such as Brazil, and .
