Fever Finalise 2013 Squad West Coast Fever are pleased to be the first ANZ Championship team to have finalised their squad for the upcoming 2013 season. The signing of former Perth Orioles shooter Lisa Millman (nee Wilkinson) completes Plummer’s squad of 12 and rewards the 31 year old local for years of tenacious athleticism. Whilst Millman was bought in as a replacement player and benched for the injured Sarah East in the 2012 season, this is her first contract to play in the ANZ Championships. “Excellent!” said Lisa today when asked how she was feeling about the news. “It’s an amazing surprise, especially following the opportunity to line up last year and train with the squad - I couldn’t be more excited.” Millman had a short break from netball following her Orioles career to recover from an ACL reconstruction, but has since been a regular feature in the Smarter than Smoking State Netball League with the West Coast Falcons (Premiers 2012), and the WA Australian Netball League Squad - Western Sting. She currently works as a Service Co-ordinator for a local car dealership whilst also being the Regional Development Officer for the West Coast Netball Region, and is an integral member of the Wanneroo Netball Association community. Speaking of the signing, Plummer is pleased to add another experienced player to the roster, “Lisa brings another level of maturity to the team, and is very adaptable at goal shooter, goal attack and wing attack. “She has had a great ANL campaign, and following what we saw of her when she joined us for a few weeks last season; I am looking forward to working with her and the team on a full time basis.” West Coast Fever 2013 memberships are on sale now, and with the whole squad now named and one of the seven home games to be held at the brand new Perth Arena; there is plenty to be excited about. The Foundation is a dream come true for me. I made my debut with the West Coast Eagles in Round 5 of the 1996 AFL Season, at the age of 16 years, and played in the 2006 premiership team. My first passion isn’t sport however, its community work in helping to improve the lives of young Indigenous Australians. But using sport as a magnet to attract our young Aboriginal people into positive activities to improve their education and wellbeing is an amazing tool that must be utilised. SCHOOL SPORT AUSTRALIA 12 & U and 15 & U NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY The championships had their origins in the Australian State Schools' Basketball Association developed originally for primary schools and played predominately on grass. Interstate carnivals commenced in 1923 and continued in 1924 when a number of exchanges between individual states occurred. In 1924 visiting teachers from Victoria, Queensland and South Australia to New South Wales made exhaustive inquiries into the question of girls’ games with the view to inaugurating interstate contests. In 1925 South Australia hosted New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland in both a junior and senior competition, one of the games attracted over 2000 spectators. South Australia was victorious in the junior section and South Australia and Victoria both finished in first place in the senior. This competition continued in 1926 in New South Wales and 1927 in Victoria. With the introduction of a perpetual trophy the first officially recognised Australian State Schoolgirls Basketball (Netball) Championship was played at the Practising School, Brisbane in 1928. The final, on the afternoon of the August 22nd, was before a large crowd. Victoria convincingly beat NSW 23 goals to 4 goals. Mr John Donald Howie donated the perpetual trophy following the win of Victoria. Mr Howie was a Victorian Councillor from 1922 – 1932 and Mayor of Camberwell in 1927 and 1928. Australian schoolgirls tournaments were organised to combine both a netball competition and an educational tour, When girls weren’t playing they attended lessons at the local school or made educational day trips. In Brisbane the girls visited Toowoomba, the Olympic Tyre and Rubber Works in Geebung and took a trip to the South Coast of Queensland.

SPECIALIST NETBALL PROGRAM Endorsed by the Department of Education. Develop your netball skills while at John Forrest Secondary College Students in the John Forrest Specialist Netball Program pursue their love of netball with the assistance of professional, accredited teachers and coaches. The program offers fantastic opportunities including intra-state and interstate tournaments and competitions as well as local competitions and matchplay. Students make outstanding progress building on basic skills and understanding of Netball through our coaching. The program is open to Year 8 to Year 10 students and in upper school students have the opportunity to further their passion for Netball by studying university and TAFE bound courses to meet their needs. All staff and students are affiliated with Netball WA and are involved in Netball as either a player, coach and/or umpire. The first Year 8 group of Specialist Netball students enrolled at John Forrest in July 1999 and since that time the program has evolved into a highly respected and successful Netball program producing players who have gone on to play State League. Specialist Netball Program students are expected to maintain a high level of achievement not only in Netball but all other learning areas and are expected to participate in the wider College community. COURSE DESCRIPTION In lower school students study four hours per week with highly qualified teachers and receive professional coaching. The course is affiliated with Netball WA and covers the development of netball skills (footwork, catching/throwing), goal shooting and attacking/defending (skills, strategies and positional play) and fitness training and testing. Students also study the history of Netball, diet and nutrition, sports medicine awareness, umpiring, including player’s exam, video game analysis (class, state league and national league teams), player and team psychology (goal setting and team building), and equipment and shoe technology.

West Coast Fever hopes all supporters will help break the record for a crowd at an ANZ Championship netball game when West Coast Fever meets the Melbourne Vixens at the state of the art Perth Arena this Saturday, April 27. They want to hear a loud and proud Fever crowd at the Arena as they try to break the current record of 8,478 fans at an ANZ Championship game. That record was set back in Round 12, 2010 at Hisense Arena when the Vixens took on the Adelaide Thunderbirds. They want to gather the biggest netball crowd in Perth since 2011 when the Australian Diamonds played an international fixture against arch-rivals New Zealand at Burswood Dome in 2011. That crowd was 6768 and they believe they can better that this Saturday.
