STEVE O’SHAUGHNESSY Steve was born in Bury in 1961 and played 1st Class cricket for Lancashire and Worcestershire. He also played Minor Counties cricket for Cumberland. In his 1st class career he scored 3720 runs at an average of 24 with 5 centuries and took 114 wickets at an average of 36 with 4 for 66 his best bowling analysis. In one day cricket he scored 2999 runs and took 115 wickets. Prior to his 1st class career Steve represented Young England on tour in the West Indies and at home against India. Steve made his debut for Lancashire in 1980 in a John Player Sunday League match versus Warwickshire and three days later his 1st class debut at The Parks against Oxford University. Here he made 50 not out and took 2 catches in an emphatic win. From 1981 to 1987 he was a regular in the Lancashire side. In 1983 he made his first century – 100 not out versus Yorkshire – but 1984 was to be his most successful season with the bat. He passed 1000 runs for the season and scored three hundreds – the highest being 159 not out against Somerset at Bath. An unusual incident occurred on the last day of the 1983 season. Lancashire were playing Leicestershire and rain delayed the start by a day and a half. On the final day, facing David Gower (0‐102) and James Whittaker (0‐ 87), Steve and Graeme Fowler both scored centuries. Fowler in 46 mins but Steve’s was in 35 mins!! This won him the Walter Lawrence Trophy for the fastest century of the season and also was equal to Percy Fender’s all time record set in 1920. This contrived score was accepted by the organisers of the Trophy but Wisden decided to keep Fender’s record and include O’Shaughnessy’s score as a footnote! Steve received his cap in 1985 but over the next three seasons his career started to decline. Wickets became harder to get and runs harder to score. So in 1988 he moved to Worcester where he made a promising start but it was a false dawn although he did help the County to the Nat West final where they were defeated by Middlesex. By the end of 1989 he was playing 2nd XI cricket so he ended his first class career and moved on to eventually play Minor Counties cricket for Cumberland. Since retiring from playing he has become an umpire and was promoted in December 2010 to the 1st Class panel for the 2011 season. .

Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid no later than 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia for auction on its website no later than 3 weeks prior to the closing date of the auction. Bids will only be accepted from CMS members. Postal bids must be in writing or e-mail by the closing date and time shown above. Generally, no item will be sold below 10% of the lower estimate without reference to the vendor. Thus, an item with a £10-15 estimate can be sold for £9, but not £8, without approval. The incremental scale for the acceptance of bids is as follows: £2 increments up to £20, then £20/22/25/28/30 up to £50, then £5 increments to £100 and £10 increments above that. So, if there are two postal bids at £25 and £30, the item will go to the higher bidder at £28. Should there be two identical bids, the first received will win. Bids submitted between increments will be accepted, thus a £52 bid will not be rounded either up or down.

Or The FrustraEons of Paying for your 2021 by Bank Transfer As you may or may not know I have been oﬀering those of you interested in purchasing the 2021 to make payment by various ways - one of those ways being by bank transfer. Now, the banks have introduced a fantas4c, all-singing, all dancing system that checks the details of the person/ company you are paying before your money is sent - next thing you know they will be opening places where you can go in and talk to real people. Anyway, over half of you who have tried to send me your payment have had the message that either the account does not exist or that they have a ‘similar’ account and at your risk you can use that one. Well, this was becoming frustra4ng so I called my bank, I was only on hold for 34 hours, but then I managed to ask the Customer Service Advisor (cashier in my day or ‘Till Number 4’) why payers were having trouble, I was asked the following: “Are you sure you gave the payer your correct details?’ Followed by “Maybe they typed your details in incorrectly.” And then, aYer much frustra4on.. “We aren’t ﬁnding this to be a common problem.” At which point I escalated my query into a complaint and asked for a Manager - two days later I received a call from ‘said Manager’ who informed me quite quickly that this was an ongoing problem across the new system and the bank would like to apologise for any inconvenience.

ENGLAND On This Day JANUARY England On This Day SATURDAY 1st JANUARY 1910 The last top notch underarm lob bowler, George Simpson-Hayward, started his Test career against South Africa in Johannesburg. In the first innings the Worcestershire bowler took 6-43 with his underarm off-breaks. However he was not as effective in the second innings, only taking 2-59, as South Africa set a target which turned out to be 19 runs too much for England. THURSDAY 1st JANUARY 1925 Four different balls were used before lunch on the first day of the second Test at Melbourne before it was discovered that No. 3 grade balls had been supplied and not the better quality No. 1 grade balls. The two captains, Arthur Gilligan of England and Herby Collins of Australia, agreed to play both first innings with the inferior balls to ensure an even playing field. The balls were so inferior that 8 of them were used before 200 runs had been scored. WEDNESDAY 1st JANUARY 1997 The second one day international between Zimbabwe and England at the Harare Sports Club was the first match in which the Duckworth/ Lewis method, for calculating a revised target after a delay for rain, came into play. The recalculation set England 186 to win from 42 overs, but they were dismissed for just 179. The highly complex Duckworth/Lewis method was devised by two statisticians, Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis, as part of a final year project at the University of the West of England in Bristol. WEDNESDAY 2nd JANUARY 1879 England were on the receiving end of the first ever Test hat-trick at the hands of Australia’s Fred Spofforth in Melbourne.
