Alguns experimentos sugeriam que a concorrência por água e nutrientes do solo levava plantas vizinhas a promoverem um maior crescimento de suas raízes. Outros indicavam que as plantas localizadas próximas umas às outras ge- ravam raízes que ocupavam menos espaço. Um novo modelo teórico, desenvolvido com auxílio do físi- co Ricardo Martínez-García, do Instituto Sul-americano para Pesquisa Fundamental (ICTP-SAIFR) e do Instituto de Física Teórica da Universidade Estadual Paulista (IFT-Unesp), leva em conta ambas observações. O modelo prevê que as raízes se espalham menos na presença de vizinhas, ao mesmo tempo que compensam a perda de território aumentando sua ramificação próxima do próprio caule. A previsão foi confirmada em um experimento com uma variedade de pimentão cultivada em estufa por 11 meses, mapeando a distribuição das raízes das plantas no solo (Science, 4 de dezembro). Especially during a public health emergency, health rumors may result in severe consequences for people’s health and risk governance. Insight into how these rumors form and harm people’s health behavior is critical for assisting people in establishing scientific health cognition and to enhance public health emergency responses. Using the case study with interview data of a salient purchase craze led by a health rumor during the COVID-19 outbreak in China, this article aimed to illustrate the process of how a piece of information becomes a health rumor. Furthermore, we identify factors that cause people to believe rumors and conduct behavior that leads to a purchase craze. Results show that a public misunderstanding of the unique psychology of uncertainty, cultural and social cognition, and conformity behavior jointly informs people’s beliefs in rumors and further causes purchase craze behavior. -

When this work was conducted, only 6 months had passed since the pandemic began, and only 4 months since the first events were recognized outside of China. It was too early to draw firm conclusions about the effectiveness of measures in each of the selected countries; however, the authors present some efforts to identify and classify response and containment measures, country-by-country, for future comparison and analysis. There is a significant variety of policy tools and response measures employed in different countries, and while it is still hard to directly compare the different approaches based on their efficacy, it will definitely provide many inputs for the future data analysis efforts. The virus initially emerged in Wuhan, China and spread across the globe. Genomic analysis disclosed that SARS-CoV-2 is phylogenetically related to severe acute respiratory syndrome-like (SARS-like) bat viruses, therefore bats could be the possible primary reservoir. Though point of origin and path of transmission is not clearly known, human to human transmission is confirmed through analysis. Due to spread of the disease in about 215 countries around the world, WHO has declared COVID-19 as public health emergency of international concern. Lawrence In Congress, multiple bills and resolutions have been introduced related to China’s Specialist in Asian Affairs handling of a novel coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China, that expanded to become the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic. This report provides a timeline of key developments in the early weeks of the pandemic, based on available public reporting. It also considers issues raised by the timeline, including the timeliness of China’s information sharing with the World Health Organization (WHO), gaps in early information China shared with the world, and episodes in which Chinese authorities sought to discipline those who publicly shared information about aspects of the epidemic. Prior to January 20, 2020—the day Chinese authorities acknowledged person-to-person transmission of the novel coronavirus—the public record provides little indication that China’s top leaders saw containment of the epidemic as a high priority. Thereafter, however, Chinese authorities appear to have taken aggressive measures to contain the virus. The Appendix includes a concise version of the timeline.
