    THE MIDDLE AGES: THE CRUSADES Toward the end of the 11th century (1000’s A.D), the Catholic Church began to authorize military expeditions, or Crusades, to expel Muslim “infidels” from the Holy Land!!! Crusaders, who wore red crosses on their coats to advertise their status, believed that their service would guarantee the remission of their sins and ensure that they could ​ ​ spend all eternity in Heaven. (They also received more worldly rewards, such as papal protection of their property and forgiveness of some kinds of loan payments.) ‘Papal’ = Relating to The Catholic Pope (Catholic Pope Pictured Left <<<) The Crusades began in 1095, when Pope Urban summoned a Christian army to fight its way to Jerusalem, and continued on and off until the end of the 15th century (1400’s A.D). No one “won” the Crusades; in fact, many thousands of people from both sides lost their lives. They did make ordinary Catholics across Christendom feel like they had a common purpose, and they inspired waves of religious enthusiasm among people who might otherwise have felt alienated from the official Church.   • Salah Al-Din
    Salah al-Din Salah al-Din (Saladin) was born in 1138 to a powerful Kurdish Muslim family in Syria. He was a schoolboy in Damascus when the Christians attacked the city during the Second Crusade. He observed firsthand how important it was for Muslims to defend their religion and themselves from the Christian crusaders. When Salah al-Din was a teenager, he served in the army of Nur al-Din, the powerful Syrian-Mesopotamian leader. As a soldier, Salah al-Din was respected and successful. In 1156, at the age of 18, he was put in charge of the Muslim security forces in Damascus. He became the personal assistant to Nur al- Din and relayed messages between Nur al-Din and his military commanders. Salah al-Din gained valuable experience in military and political organization and effective communication. He fought successfully with the Syrian Muslim troops in Egypt against the crusaders.     Actions and Receptions of the Knights Templar from 1118-1192 By Neil Wu A thesis submitted to the Department of History for honors Duke University Durham, North Carolina Under the advisement of Dr. Mary J. Morrow April 15, 2019 Wu i Abstract In 1118, a quasi-monastic military order known as the Knights Templar was founded in the crusader kingdom of Jerusalem. Church leaders saw this organization as an opportunity to inspire the religiosity of the crusading movement. In 1129, their aspirations were expressed through the Latin Rule of the Knights Templar, a document that regulated the Templars’ conduct. The Latin Rule’s rigid guidelines prescribed a lifestyle that combined elements of monasticism and knighthood. The Church hoped that under the influence of this mandate, the Templars would promote an agenda of piety, religious duty, camaraderie with peers, and ferocity against the enemy. However, the Templars were quick to form their own interpretations of purpose. Previous scholarship has primarily focused on the late thirteenth century actions of the Knights Templar in order to determine what factors led to their eventual downfall in 1307. However, this thesis argues that even without considering these later actions of the Knights Templar, there is significant evidence from 1118-1192 alone that demonstrates how the order began forming their own interpretations of their purpose. Rather than living under strict adherence to the original mandates of the Latin Rule, what resulted was an organization that excelled in battle and utilized its military abilities to pursue their own financial and political agendas in the Holy Land. Many contemporaries took note of the Templars’ choice of actions and of their apparent priorities.

    Defend Your Coast: Network Analysis of Crusader Fortifications and Settlements in the Kyrenia Region of Cyprus By Tyler Martin Caldwell March 2019 Director of Thesis: Dr. David Stewart Major Department: Program in Maritime Studies, Department of History The Mediterranean island of Cyprus is situated at the crossroads of the Near East and the Aegean Civilizations. During the Middle Ages, Cyprus experienced raids that would devastate the coastal landscape. Coastal towns and villages were destroyed, and many of them never rebuilt. Fortifications were constructed to defend the coastline from raiders and potential invaders. Scholars believe that during times of heavy raiding coastal settlements are abandoned in favor of inland settlements. This theory has not been tested using Geographic Information System (GIS). This study used GIS to test the area of influence raiders could exert inland during a raid. Based on past research the extent of influence was determined to be 3000 m inland. The Network Analyst tool was used to determine the shortest routes raiders and defenders took to reach undefended villages and churches. The time needed for defenders and attackers to reach sites was determined using a hiking calculator. Based on the results of the test the majority of sites are situated outside the range of raiders influence. Here and There, Now and Then: Portrayals of the Third Crusade in Film and How their Inaccuracies Encompass Contemporary Movements by Steven Anthony Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between films dealing with historical events and how they encompass events of the time the film was made. This work uses two film representations of the Third Crusade, from 1187 – 1192; the first is Youssef Chahines’ 1963 film Al Nasser Salah Ad-Din and the second is Ridley Scotts’ 2005 film, Kingdom of Heaven. Between the films’ narrations of events and the actual history, parallels are created between past and present, dealing with ideas such as tolerance and peaceful dialogue, as well as movements such as national, ethnic, or religious unity and inclusiveness.
