History - Introduction Video games have been an important concept in the advancement of technology for over 40 years now. Since 1975, they have not only become one of the most popular sources of entertainment, they have also played a major role in globalization, allowing people from all over the world to communicate amongst each other. The “First” Video Game In 1962 Steve Russell invents SpaceWar!, a game that was developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It wasn’t the first actual video game developed, however it was the first intended to be played on computers Game was developed for a computer that cost over $150,000 making it unmarketable and unknown to the general public. Arcades In 1971, Nolan Bushnell along with Ted Dabney (whom later founded Atari together in 1975) programmed the SpaceWars! game to play on a television screen Together they created the first Arcade Machine, Computer Space, which operated at 25 cents per 90 seconds. Video Games Become Popular In 1975, Atari released Pong as a home video game on their first console. Pong becomes a huge success among a teenage market. The sales of video game entertainment systems also begin to skyrocket. Arcade Games From 1977 to the late 1980’s, video games became extremely popular as coin-operated machines in arcades. Games such as Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Space Invaders became extremely successful. Early Consoles In 1972, Ralph Baer created the Magnavox Odyssey. It was the first video game console playable on home televisions Magnavox mass-produced these consoles which featured 5 diskettes that generated different code already located in the machine and 2 huge controllers that used 6-C batteries apiece HAL (A.I.) first introduced Atari releases 2600 in 1975, these entertainment systems are referred to as the 1st generation of consoles 2nd & 3rd Generation Consoles (8-Bit) Atari 2600 Nintendo Entertainment System(NES - 1985) 4th Generation (16-Bit) Super Nintendo (SNES) Sega Genesis Turbografx-16 5th Generation (32-64 bit) Atari Jaguar(32 Bit) This era began what would later be known as “the Console Wars”. The art production is usually overseen by an art director or art lead, making sure their vision is followed. •Programmer: A game programmer is a software engineer who primarily develops video games or related software (such as game development tools). The game's codebase development is handled by programmers. Rules Definitions •Sound engineers: are technical professionals responsible for sound effects and sound positioning. They sometimes oversee voice acting and other sound asset creation. Composers who create a game's musical score also comprise a game's sound team, though often this work is outsourced. •Tester: The quality assurance is carried out by game testers. A game tester analyzes video games to document software defects as part of a quality control. Box 217, 7500AE Enschede The Netherlands ABSTRACT Purpose/ Gap – With the shift from goods- to service-dominant logic, it is crucial to effectively enable value co-creation through suitable value propositions. Formulating value propositions includes insights on the customer’s preferences, capabilities, and expectations, which can be obtained through the customer’s co- creation experiences, since they are the foundation of value. However, there is a limited amount of research in this area, especially from the customer’s perspective. In order to close this knowledge gap and successfully facilitate value co-creation, the aim of this study is to explore the nature of value co-creation through the customers’ co-creation experiences and their implied determinants. This is done through a case study on the online video game Minecraft, due to its open innovation-friendly environment, allowing for a wide range of co-creation options. Methodology – Data was obtained through a netnographic approach in community forums and video platform. A total of 84 threads and 169 posts within 6 forums, as well as 23 videos have been selected and analyzed. Findings – Four distinct areas of value co-creation have been identified in the game, which enable personalized experiences and values. The game’s technological and connective environment, the customer’s role readiness, and the nature of interaction shape co-creation experiences. Additionally, evidence indicates that co-created value is not only generated through a developer-to-gamer relationship, but also between gamer- to-gamer relationships with the developer as facilitator.

    THE REVOLUTIONARY POTENTIAL OF INDEPENDENT VIDEO GAMES Delaney McCallum Art, Literature, and Contemporary European Thought Professors Isabelle Alfandary, Marc Crépon, and Michael Loriaux 10 December 2019 1 Introduction The definition of ‘video games’ has been hotly debated and contested since their creation - in this way, they are no different from any other human art form. In his book The Art of Video ​ Games, media scholar Grant Tevinor characterizes video games as “interactive fictions.”1 There ​ are two facets of this definition which require specific understanding. First, the word ‘interactive:’ this means that the audience or player of a video game communicates with a fictive scenario, whether it be a narrative or a form of physical simulation. This could take the form of clicking through web pages with a computer mouse. It could also mean performing a series of actions by pressing buttons on a controller in a certain order. In video games, some sort of transaction or communion with the player and the environment of the game takes place. The second crucial point of this definition is the word ‘fictions.’ Although this word is often used interchangeably with the word ‘narrative’ in modern game literature, there is an important distinction between the two that must be clarified. ‘Fictions’ as a category may include narratives, but this includes other constructions, from flight simulators to the landscapes created with virtual reality technology. For the purposes of this paper, I will be utilizing Tevinor’s definition of video games when I refer to specific examples and the medium as a whole. Another crucial contextualization of ensuing analysis is the interpretation of the difference between what is deemed ‘mainstream’ video games and ‘independent’ video games.

    1. The “real” Inventors of Arcade Videogames? As more and more of the early history of videogames comes to light, perceptions of who did what and when keep changing. For example: In a recent paper written by Professor Henry Lowood (Curator for History of Science & Technology Collections; Germanic Collections; Film & Media Collections, Stanford University) entitled “Meditations about Pong from different perspectives”, he reminds us of the story of the summer project of a “recently” (1970) graduated SAIL (Stanford University) student, Bill Pitts, and his friend, Hugh Tuck, as follows: “ The Galaxy Game was a coin-operated computer game for the newly released PDP 11/20, DEC's first 16-bit computer. DEC had fit the PDP 11 into a relatively small box and listed it for a mere $20,000, hoping thereby to open "new markets and new applications." Pitts and Tuck formed a company called Computer Recreations, bought the low-end version of the PDP-11 for only $13,000 and converted the PDP-10 version Spacewar! for this machine, including a Hewlett-Packard vector display, wooden cabinet, and other parts, their expenses came to roughly $20,000. In September 1971, they installed it in Stanford’s student union, where a later version that supported up to four monitors (eight players) could be found until 1979. The Galaxy Game was faithful not only to Spacewar!, but also to the player community (university students and computer engineers) and technical configuration (software code, vector displays, timesharing, etc.) that produced it” Is this not still another story describing the invention of the arcade videogame?
