I’m Japanese and was in Winnipeg between October 2000 and January 2002 to study English. While I was in Canada I would pick up your magazines every month and enjoyed them. I still subscribe now. Also, have any movies ever shot in the city? I know Harrison 3/C Ford came to Gimli (it’s not Winnipeg, though) to do B some shots for K-19: The Widowmaker a year ago. Thanks for your help. G —Hiromi Oyama, Yamatotakada-City, Japan R Hmmm…there are lots of great musicians from Winnipeg — Neil Young, Burton Cummings. But movie stars? The most cur- rent would have to be Anna Paquin, who plays Rogue in the X-Men movies. A lot of people think the 20-year-old is a New Zealand native, since she moved there when she was four and her first movie, The Piano, was shot amongst the kiwis. But Paquin has always maintained close ties with the Peg and can switch between New Zealand and Canadian accents effort- lessly. Also, Nia Vardalos, who wrote and starred in last summer’s indie surprise My Big Fat Greek Wedding, grew up in Winnipeg.
