ABOUT THE CHARITY Roundabout is South Yorkshire’s local youth housing charity providing shelter, support and life skills to young people aged 16-25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Roundabout supports over 250 young people living in accommodation every day, either provided by or supported by our charity. We have a hostel, residential projects in Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster and provide key services delivering comprehensive programmes of training, involvement and empowerment which help to break the cycle of homelessness and develop long term independent living skills. Celebrating 22+ years of service and positive change April 2017 Volume 24, Issue 4 Stories of Our Lives Donald Silva and William Baillie Don and Bill met each other 50+ years ago and have been together since November of 1966. They bought their current house in East Oakland back in 1972. Not what many people would consider your "typical" couple, this long-term pair - finally married in 2008 before Prop. 8 was passed and subsequently thrown out by the Supreme Court - have spent many happy hours with Don dressed as a stunning woman and Bill his handsome male escort. Their lives started out in much more traditional ways, however. Don was born at Providence Hospital in Oakland on May 2nd, 1935, the youngest of three sons, to a working-class mechanic and his homemaker wife. Even as an infant, Don was frequently mistaken for a girl. "My Dad came from a very large family of 13 kids," Don explains, "so I was surrounded by family throughout my childhood. My grandfather had a ranch in DeCoto - which is now Union City - with a creek running through it. My brothers, cousins and I spent many happy days there working in the huge vegetable fields and playing at 'bare-ass beach'!" A member of the first class to graduate from San Lorenzo High School in 1953, Don half-heartedly dated a few girls, but knew at an early age that he was really more into boys. "I was mostly trying to cover my ass in high school, so people wouldn't know I was gay," Don recalls. -

Perplexing Federal Cases from Mississippi: Lessons for School Administrators

Ratliff Vol. 41, No. 3/4, 2010, pp. 198–209 PERPLEXING FEDERAL CASES FROM MISSISSIPPI: LESSONS FOR SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS Abstract Federal court cases are examined in an effort to view recent First Amendment rights infringements which have occurred in Mississippi. Case law reinforces students’ rights to wear same-sex outfits to school functions as well as to bring same-sex dates. Connection to a recent civil rights in- vestigation by the NAACP into a north Mississippi middle school demon- strates the strength of the organization inside Mississippi. Combined, the recent court cases and threats of litigation suggest that a stronger under- standing of homosexual rights, as protected by the First Amendment, is necessary for administrators. In the spring of 2010, the national spotlight was focused on a small rural school district in Mississippi. The political and legal firestorm which followed ultimately involved a federal judge, the ACLU, and an American Idol judge. The consequences of the case, along with the federal judge’s rul- ing, should be used as a tool to stress to all current and future school admin- istrators the importance of protecting a student’s first amendment rights. The First Amendment Rights Choice of Same Sex Date at a School Function School administrators must first make the distinction between dress codes and uniform policies. A dress code distinguishes what must not be worn and a uniform policy states what must be worn. Dress codes for the most part have been allowed by the federal courts, while uniform poli- cies and the limits of such an action have been challenged. -

For the purposes of this document, I will make use of the established term low male voice (LMV) while acknowledging that there is a push for the removal of gender from voice classification in the industry out of respect for our trans, non-binary and gender fluid populations. In addition to analysis and summation of musical concepts and content found within each selection, each repertoire selection will include discussions of style, vocal technique, vocalism, and character in an effort to establish routes towards authenticity in the field of musical theatre over the last twenty five years. The explosion of online streaming and online sheet music resources over the last decade enable analysis involving original cast recordings, specific noteworthy performances, and discussions on transposition as it relates to the honoring of character and capability of an individual singer. My experiences with challenges as a young low voice (waiting for upper notes to develop, struggling with resonance strategies above a D♭4) with significant musicianship prowess left me searching for a musically challenging outlet outside of the Bel Canto aesthetic.
