Create an Apple ID with no credit card (iTunes Account) (recommended method)

An Apple ID is a username for all things Apple. This ID will allow us to push out iPad apps to student devices and enable iCloud data storage for each student. In order to receive and activate an iPad the first week of school each student must have access to an Apple ID. The student will be responsible for knowing the user name/email and password associated with the account, and will share it with the school in order to receive and activate the iPad. Apple ID’s are not owned by the school, so it will be the responsibility of the parent with student to set up and maintain the ID. Students under the age of 13 are not allowed to set up an Apple ID on their own. According to Apples terms of service this account must be set up with a parent and shared to the student. Please follow the steps below to create and record a shared Apple ID.

Before starting ● Access or create an email account to activate an Apple ID. This email can’t be associated with a current Apple ID. The email account can be changed later, but must be an email account student and parent can access to verify the Apple ID. This email can also be used to reset a forgotten password in the future. ● Important - Students under the age of 13 must have their parent create this ID. It is important to enter the parent’s information, including birth date, or the account will not be created. This account will technically be a shared account between parent and student so a parent can help monitor and assist their child with an Apple ID until they reach the age of 13. ● Create the account with no credit card. All school related items will be issued by the school so there is no need for a credit card to be entered. *Following the instructions below will set up an account that does not require a credit card. ● Make sure the computer you are using to set up this account has iTunes installed, as you will be creating your Apple ID through iTunes. (If you need to download iTunes, visit http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ ).

1. Open iTunes, and log out of any open accounts (you should see Sign In in the top right corner to be sure you are not logged in to a previous account) Click iTunes Store (on the left side of the iTunes window.)

2. If the Store does not automatically open, click iTunes Store (on the left side of the iTunes window) and pick your country by clicking the appropriate country flag located in the bottom-right corner of the main iTunes Store page.

3. Navigate to the by clicking on App Store from the top navigation bar.

4. Important: Before proceeding to the step, you must download and install a free app. (This allows you to opt-out of linking a credit card to your account.) To find a free app, navigate to the Top Apps column on the right hand side of the App Store window. Scroll down until you can see the list of Free Apps, and click View All. Select any app by clicking on it, then click Free next to the app icon. (The free iBooks app is a good one to start with.)

5. In the pop-up window, click Create Apple ID.

6. From there you’ll be directed to the "Welcome to the iTunes Store" screen. Click Continue.

7. You'll need to read and agree to the iTunes Store Terms & Conditions. Make sure you check the box next to where it says "I have read and agree to the iTunes Terms and Conditions”, and then click Agree.

8. Enter the iTunes email address and password you’d like to use for this account, taking care to create a password that both the student and parent(s) will remember. Enter your security questions and an optional rescue email address (recommend for those that frequently change email addresses). Enter your birthdate - according to Apple terms of service this information must come from a person over 13. Please enter a parent’s information and birthdate.

9. Once you are satisfied with the information entered, click Continue.

10. Select None as the payment type.

11. Continue to fill out the required name and address fields.

12. You'll then see a screen that says 'Verify your Account'. Click Done and then check your email for a verification email from iTunes Store. (Be sure and check your junk mail if it doesn’t show up in your inbox.)

13. Open the email and click the Verify Now link enclosed in the email to activate your account.

14. Once you click on the link, iTunes should then prompt you to sign in with your account name and password.

15. You'll then see the "Congratulations" screen. Click Done to be taken to the App Store home page.

Students are expected to use all 5 gigabytes of storage for school work. Students will be shown how to manage this storage, but if you feel your child needs more storage you can purchase it at any time by following the directions on this link. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4874
