  • The Original Joe Jackson Band—Lead Vocalist/Songwr
A Conversation with Joe Jackson by Barry Gutman (Puremusic.com 5/2003) The original Joe Jackson band—lead vocalist/songwriter/keyboard player Jackson, bassist Graham Maby, guitarist Gary Sanford, and drummer Dave Houghton—rode the musical New Wave out of England to international success in 1979 on a pair of classic albums on A&M Records, Look Sharp! and I’m the Man, and tireless touring. The world fell hard for the band’s spare-yet-full sound, featuring Sanford’s stuttering, insistent rhythm guitar chords, Houghton’s swift, precise and solid drumming, and, especially, Maby’s amazingly intricate bass—the band’s true lead instrument. And then, of course, there were Jackson’s infrequent piano and melodica solos that, along with his rich musical vocabulary which, at that time, emphasized not only powerful rock but also bouncy ska, melodic pop, and lyrics that were alternately scathing and vulnerable. The Joe Jackson Band worked relentlessly throughout 1980, coming off the road just long enough to record their most experimental and least warmly received album, Beat Crazy. By the end of that year, they’d called it a day. Over the next 20 years, Jackson recorded several more albums that were cast in various shades of rock, pop, jazz, blues, and even classical music, as the muse and mood struck him. The results of his eclectic efforts ranged from 1982’s Night and Day, Jackson’s pop commercial peak, featuring adult contemporary standbys “Stepping Out” and “Breaking Us in Two,” to, for Sony Classical, 1997’s Heaven and Hell, a somewhat challenging interpretation of the seven deadly sins that’s best described, on Jackson’s own Web site, as “not quite classical, not quite jazz, and not quite rock.” Some of Jackson’s other albums featured big band covers (1981’s extremely enjoyable Jumpin’ Jive), instrumental orchestral music (1987’s Willpower), and various film soundtracks, including 1983’s Mike Murder, which contained several fine songs and a score wasted on an indifferently edited and marketed movie.

  • Joe Jackson „Live at Rockpalast“
Joe Jackson „Live At Rockpalast“ Elisabeth Richter Hildesheimer Straße 83 30169 Hannover GERMANY Tel.: 0049‐511‐806916‐16 Fax: 0049‐511‐806916‐29 Cell: 0049‐177‐7218403 elisabeth.richter@mig‐music.de Release : 24.02.2012 Cat. No.: MIG 90447 Barcode: 885513904478 Format: 2 DVD Digipack Genre: Rock There are very few documents on film that present rock artists at the zenith of their career – and even fewer that cast a light on the beginning. In the run-up to DVD there were merely promotion videos, clips of concerts and video recordings. Of all things it was the much maligned television that captured these unique moments – with the WDR “Rockpalast” leading the way. Apart from only BBC’s "Old Grey Whistle Test" this series established during the seventies a forum for contemporary artists some of which are forgotten today, others obscure – and several legendary. Joe Jackson is one of these legends but a highly industrious one. He continues to record albums, surprises with concerts in shifting line-ups, is living some time in Berlin, another time on the Isle of Wight and one suitcase he left in New York. He already had a career before 1979 when his debut album "Look Sharp!" was released: In his retrospective book "A Cure for Gravity" you can read how Jackson and his band travelled through England and played in pubs to indifferent audiences songs by David Bowie. Glam and punk went by and now Joe Jackson‘s time had finally come: Within a few days he penned a dozen songs for his trio, borrowed the snotty attitude from the hip New Wave geezers and fed the press with slogans like “I hate the crappy trees”.

  • The PAMS Bible
The Bible by Welcome to the official set of PAMS lyrics, for the first time presented in useful data form. There were no lyric sheets created back then for Series 1-13, so we compiled them by listening to the demos and typing them out. In the 1960s and ‘70s, PAMS used a typewriter to create each lyric sheet (with one exception). We have reproduced them here with a font very similar in style and size to the originals so that they have the appearance of a vintage lyric sheet…without all the smudges. And through the miracle of computers, you can execute a word search and a number of other fun things. I painstakingly preserved the inconsistent punctuation and style to keep the authentic feeling of the originals. Where I decided to add comments, there is a footnote that can be clicked to take you directly to the comment for that line. This CD-ROM was implemented by our Web master, Norman Barrington. If you desire any sort of Web service, he’s your guy! Contact him at [email protected]. Ken R. January, 2004 Jingle Lyrics: The Odd Facts The shortest jingle packages? Series 6B, “Color Radio,” only had three jingles. Series 6C, also called “Color Radio,” had just three cuts as well. Series 7 is a strange one. The demo is sung by a black vocal group and the whole concept really should be put in a time capsule. Definitely politically incorrect! Some of these instrumental tracks were re-used in later series, sung in a less ethnic fashion.

  • Joe Jackson I'm the Man Album Download I'm the Man
joe jackson i'm the man album download I'm the Man. "I'm the Man" picks up where Joe Jackson's very successful debut, Look Sharp!, left off. In fact, the sessions were completed with the same bandmembers and the very same producer (David Kershenbaum), and released a mere nine months after the debut album, perhaps under the philosophy that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. To be fair, the group does expand its musical territory in places on its sophomore effort, trying its hand at more serious ballads such as "Amateur Hour" and "It's Different for Girls," but the title track follows squarely in the footprints of "Got the Time" and "Throw It Away" from the first record. Driven by the propulsive bass playing of Graham Maby and supported by the spot-on drumming of Dave Houghton, "I'm the Man" is a taught ball of nervy new wave pop, tumbling straight ahead at breakneck speeds, while Jackson plays the role of media-savvy flimflam man, willing to promote any latest fad for a buck, like the shady street vendor of trinkets he portrays on the front cover. His caustic vitriol flows in waves against the percolating groove of the music as the guitar lays back for each verse, "Right now/I think I'm gonna plan a new trend/Because the line on the graph's getting low/And we can't have that/And you think that you're immune/But I can sell you anything/Anything from a thin safety pin to a porkpie hat/'Cause I got the trash and you've got the cash/So baby we should get along fine.
