CALIFORNIA TABLE GRAPES, 1979 SEASON

Light of California table grapes started in the Coachella Valley during the last week of May, All shippers were working the following week and as supplies increased prices declined. During the second week of June a shortage of trucks developed that continued through most of June, delaying movement. Harvest of Thompson Seedless started in late June and most shippers in the district were finished on all varieties by mid-July. In the Southern and Central San Joaquin Valley very light harvest started around mid-July. Harvest continued active in the San Joaquin Valley until the completion of Emperors in late October. Unseasonally warm weather in October tended to delay harvest. Tokay harvest in the Lodi area extended from around mid-August to mid-October.

In the Coachella Valley prices declined during the Season, closing at their low point» Kern District and Central San Joaquin Valley prices were lowest in September and October except on Thompson Seedless which advanced as their season closed. Prices advanced slightly in November and December and held relatively steady through the remainder of fhe marketing season. Lodi District Tokays showed little change during the season.

Cold storage holdings peaked in late October at 6,701,000 packages, up nearly 1 million from 1978 but 1,8 million below the peak on the corresponding date in 1977. Emperor holdings peaked at over 5 million packages, up nearly 1 million from a year earlier. Thompson Seedless holdings during the season were generally above the corresponding period a year earlier. The final storage report in mid-March showed nearly 1/3 million packages of Emperors still in storage compared with virtually no holdings after mid- February a year earlier.

13 CALIFORNIA RAISIN GRAPES - 1978-79 SEASON

General

The 1979 California raisin season was featured by nearly ideal weather during the drying period, record production, larger dry away ratio than normal, and smaller returns to producers«

Production and Marketing Conditions

Nearly ideal weather conditions prevailed during the 1979 raisin lay season« This was in sharp contrast to the extremely adverse weather of 1978. In 1979, temperatures for drying were generally good, mostly in the high 80s and low 90s, accompanied by light drying winds« Humidity was generally on the low side. Grape maturity was slightly above normal in many , allowing for a more rapid harvest and a shorter drying season. Bunch size and quality were good, although bunches were looser than usual.

Harvest for raisin production started in the Kern District around mid-August. Raisin lay activity expanded rapidly to the Central San Joaquin Valley, reaching peak by late August and was nearly 80% complete by the first week of September, Many growers had finished turning and rolling their natural Thompson Seedless by the second week of Septembero Deliveries to handlers were in peak volume in late September and early Octobero Quantities delivered to handlers during this period ran well ahead of the past two seasons. Some shortage of labor for harvesting was reported in late September but was not considered critícale

Fresh production of raisin type grapes was estimated at 2,320,000 short tons in 1979, up sharply from the 1,670,000 tons a year earlier. Although demand by wineries for raisin type grapes was slightly less active than in recent seasons, utilization still equaled 700,000 tons compared with 702,000 a year earlier» Utilization of raisin varieties for drying totaled 1,376,000 tonSo

The first asking prices for 1979 crop natural Thompson Seedless and Zante currant raisins were announced by the Raisin Bargaining Association on September 21, 1979« The initial price for Thompson Seedless was $1,150 and for Zante currants $1,100 per sweat box ton. This offer was given consideration by handlers and accepted by early the following week« The negotiated prices were for the free tonnage of natural seedless and all tonnages of Zante currants o Prices for Thompson Seedless were $450 per ton below and for Zante currants $500 below 1978 respectively« During the same period prices for dipped seedless and golden bleach seedless were established at the same level as natural seedless, or $1,150 per sweat box ton« However, occasional lots of golden bleach were purchased earlier in the season at slightly lower prices but were not reported specifi- cally by the Market News Service« Trading of Muscats was insufficient to quote since the supply was extremely light.

Deliveries of 1979 crop raisins through May 3, 1980, according to Raisin Adminis- trative Committee reports, totaled 262,941 tons of natural seedless, 1,606 tons of loose Muscats, 464 tons of Sultanas, 19,464 tons of golden seedless, 13,998 tons of dipped seedless, 3,354 tons of Zante currants and 1,089 tons of Monukka, all sweat box weight. Deliveries totaled a record 302,918 tons of all types compared with 92,375 tons to the corresponding date a year earlier when production was severely damaged by rain»

Shipments of California raisins during the first nine months (August-April) of the 1979-80 marketing season totaled 174,456 tons, including 7,477 reserve raisins, accord- ing to RAC reports. A year earlier shipments through April totaled 110,220 tons, in- cluding 2,370 tons of reserve raisins. U.S. exports of raisins from July 1979 through April 1980 totaled 51,950 short tons of free tonnage raisins, well above the 20,205 tons

14 for the previous season (August-July). 18 CALIFORNIA WINE GRAPES, 1979-80 MARKETING SEASON

Increased bearing acreage and above normal yields by wine grape varieties were the major contributors to a new record high production of 1.82 million tons of wine type varieties3 and 4.558 million tons total for all grapes« From this large production wineries crushed a record 2,516,203 tons of which 1,732,281 tons were wine type varieties; 184,036 table types and 699,886 raisin type varieties. Of the 1,7 million wine t3rpe grapes crushed 592,981 were white varieties and 1,139,300 black varieties. The largest single variety crushed was Thompson Seedless at 650,397 tons, followed by French Colombard at 225,371 tons. Generally, overall quality was good and sugar, acid and pH were well balanced. The growing-harvesting season, however, was subjected to many adverse conditions ranging from: 1« a lengthy heat wave which produced some shatterj raisining, and ambering of white varieties, and at the same time accelerating maturity on normally late producing varieties to the extent of creating gluts in the wineries and disrupting their scheduling; 2. cool, intermittent, rainy weather was responsible for excessive mildew and rot; 3. and the increase of nematodes and the Western Grapeleaf Skeletonizer were becoming a serious problem, particularly in the San Joaquin Valley. In addition, each year labor shortages seem to appear with more regularity, and during the 1979 harvesting period most areas felt the economic impact of rising costSo

During the period 1975 through 1977 wine grape prices advanced rather sharply, nearly 50% higher on black varieties and better than 99% on varieties« In 1978, however, signs of a reversal of this pattern began to take shape and by 1979 prices had declined rather sharply on certain of the black varieties, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, down 30o37o, but prices for most blacks averaged around TL lower. White wine varieties on the other hand managed to maintain a nearly 20% overall gain, although it should be pointed out that from 1978 to 1979 Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and White Riesling actually declined by 5o6%, lo7%> and 5.9%, respectively. Certain varieties appear to be in fairly heavy supply, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignane, Barbera, Ruby Cabernet, Rubired, and possibly Merlot and Napa Camay. Although certain white varieties appear heavily planted such as Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, French Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc and White Riesling, so far only Chardonnay and White Riesling have shown any indication of a price decline.

WINE MARKETING

The exciting growth in white wine sales and the slowdown of movement has stimulated new plantings of white wine varieties and the grafting over of some black wine varieties to whites« The new plantings will have no appreciable effect on supplies for another five years while removals could have an almost immediate effect on the 1980 crop. Graftings, depending on the degree of take, will have very little impact on production for the next two to three years«

Wine continues to be one of the fastest growing agricultural industries. From an industry typified by small family oriented wineries it has developed into a large sophisticated enterprise« During the past 20 years or so wine sales have increased at an unbelievable rate« For example, shipments of California into all markets in 1947 were 86 million gallons compared to a little over 314 million gallons in 1979, 250 million gallons or 80% of which were table types« During the period 1960-79 gross wine production in California soared from 143 million gallons to around 373 million gallons.
