Keywords: Pola lantai, transformasi geometri, tarian. 1. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. Signature: Date: 1 Acknowledgements My sincere gratitude is expressed to: Professor Graham Welch, for his continuous guidance, support, encouragement and inspiration throughout my research journey and thesis writing. Professor Adam Ockelford and Angela Voyajolu, for their insightful discussions with me on the SoI-EY framework which was applied in this study. The participant families in this study, for their generous commitment and precious contribution to this study. My family, for their continuous support in every respect of my life. My friends in the UK, Taiwan, and other parts of the world, for their encouragement and companionship throughout my studies. The Taiwanese government, for the award of scholarship that financially supported my studies in the UK. The Buddha, for his blessings and spiritual inspiration in my life. 2 Abstract The thesis investigates the musical behaviour and development of young, pre-school children of the Chinese diaspora in London. There has been rapid growth in the Chinese population in the UK over the last three decades, yet little is known about of the nature and significance of the diaspora in young children’s musical development. Two theoretical frameworks were used to frame the nature of the research. Firstly, pre- school musical behaviour in the home was investigated through the Sounds of Intent in the Early Years framework (Ockelford, 2015; Voyajolu & Ockelford, 2016).

  • Mass Media Technologies and Popular Music Genres: K-Pop and Youtube*
Korea Journal, vol. 53, no. 4 (winter 2013): 34-58. 34 ©Korean NationalKOREA Commission JOURNAL for / UNESCO, WINTER 2013 Mass Media Technologies and Popular Music Genres: K-pop and YouTube* Ingyu OH and Hyo-Jung LEE Abstract Sociological studies of the music industry emphasize the importance of mass media technologies in the birth of a new popular music genre. However, these studies have not fully explained the business structure of new media and new popular music. They also failed to predict K-pop’s global success via YouTube and iTunes. The emergence of Internet-based music stores and music video streaming sites, particularly YouTube, has a strong connection to Korean content as it allows Korean artists to bypass convention- al music distributors who control business-to-customer music distribution channels in the United States and Europe. The emergence of the digital economy powered by PCs and smartphones, ushered in a new era of business-to-business music distribution, thus minimizing transaction costs of the global music business for Korean entertainment firms. This article argues that K-pop producers, with no alternative channels for dis- tributing their music to global audiences for profit, actively chose YouTube for its free music distribution despite its low-profit margins from royalty fees. J-pop and American pop music distributors, however, avoided YouTube because the profit margin from YouTube was far lower than from traditional media, such as CDs and iTunes, giving K-pop primary standing in the niche market. Keywords: K-pop, music industry, technology, media, YouTube, iTunes, SNS * This work was supported by the National Research Foundation Grant funded by the Korean Government (MEST) (NRF-2007-361-AL0013).

  • 1 Uncles' Generation: Adult Male Fans and Alternative
1 Uncles’ Generation: Adult Male Fans and Alternative Masculinities in South Korean Popular Music Jarryn Ha (Case Western Reserve University) Abstract This article discusses the recent emergence of adult male fans of Korean pop (K-pop) music who openly engage themselves in fan activities typically associated with teenagers (particularly teenage girls) and the significance of their adoration of young female celebrities. The recent appearance of the “samchon (uncle) fans” in the Korean pop culture discourse marks the first instance since the early 1990s, when teenagers became the primary target audience of South Korea’s entertainment industry, in which male adults reclaimed a significant position as a demographic group of fans. The samchon fans differ from the traditional ajossi (middle-aged, patriarchal men) listeners of adult contemporary music in numerous ways, not only in what singers and musical genres they listen to, but also in their self-identification as fans, participation in fan activities and mass media portrayals. In this article, I investigate the implications of the men’s consumption pattern and their representation in South Korean mass media within the contexts of the history of the construction of hegemonic masculinity in South Korea and of recent developments in East Asian popular culture; explore possible ways to apply, complicate and question existing theoretical and conceptual frameworks to explain the phenomenon; and argue for the possibility of politically potent, alternative masculinities constructed and manifested through the men’s conspicuous consumption of cultural commodities. 2 Introduction During most of the 1990s and the first decade of the twenty-first century, the consumer- fan base for South Korean popular music consisted largely of teenagers.

Speaking on stage, Geummi, Ellin, Choa, Way and Soyul expressed their support for the 7% Project campaign and said they wanted to help raise awareness around the issue by making helmet wearing popular. “We wear helmets all the time and we can dance, sing and do almost everything without the helmet being an obsticle so we want to help promote that especially to children,” said the five member girl group. Thai stars, Gail Sophicha, dance crew ‘SaCrew’, internet sensation KruNoklek and Bangmod school teachers helped make the event an evening to remember. “This marks the official launch of ‘The 7% Project’ and our campaign to make roads a safer place for children begins here today.
