Seeing everyone there — my parents; my brothers and sisters; my cousins, whose own children are getting married — made me realize that my generation is now the one to continue the Muro tradition of putting family first. If you know me, you know that I love my family. I try to visit my parents as much as possible, but, when I’m not there, I feel guilty for missing time with them. I miss the little things, like early morning espresso, and long Italian lunches on Sundays. I miss sitting with them, catching them up on my work and hearing their stories. K RoseMcGowan The Dawn of Hollywood’s Next Great Director The accomplished actor channels her creative fire into Dawn, her bold and impressive directorial debut; gushes about her treasured memories of New Orleans; and uses her powerful voice to crusade for the voiceless animals of the Louisiana SPCA.

Rose McGowan has undoubtedly solidified her chops as an amazing, in-demand actor in Hollywood. She has taken the screen by a mighty storm in films such as Scream, Grindhouse and Conan the Barbarian, and in popular television shows and movies like Charmed, Nip/Tuck and Elvis. But after some reflection, McGowan decided to follow her heart by taking the leap into directing. With Dawn, a substantial and engrossing short dramatic thriller set in 1961 that explores young women in their formative years, McGowan satisfied her creative soul and truly unearthed her artistic passion. The accolades have been forthcoming since the film’s premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, and McGowan is proving herself a force to be reckoned with early in her new career as a director.

“For me, it’s all about disrupting the mind,” McGowan says. “In Dawn, there’s actually very little violence on screen; what you are imagining you’re seeing is more horrifying than what you actually see on screen. It is very tense after the initial soft sweetness gets through to the core of possibly something rotten. And this was such an interesting era for women, especially

ASK THE PHARMACIST

I was recently diagnosed with diabetes. What medications will my doctor Q prescribe to help me manage it? In Type 2 diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin, or the cells in your body are not reacting to the insulin as they should. Sometimes, your doctor may see if your diabetes can be controlled by diet and exercise. This is usually in cases where the blood sugar is not that elevated. If control of the disease is unattainable through diet and exercise, your physician will move on to prescription drugs. A Depending on factors such as blood sugar levels and current medications, your physician may choose oral medications before insulin injectables. In some cases, just one medication, like metformin, may control diabetes. However, in many cases, a combination of medications is prescribed to control the disease’s progression. There are many medications used for diabetes. Some of the actions of these drugs stimulate the release of insulin; some improve the sensitivity to insulin and inhibit the release of glucose from the liver. So, using a combination of these medications together can more effectively control diabetes. Along with these medications, it is always important to eat the proper foods and exercise regularly. The better you care for yourself, the slower diabetes will progress. As always, if you have any questions, please contact your local pharmacist.

Life is what you make it. Just ask Chris Pham, an entrepreneur whose hair-and-body product line is garnering enthusiastic responses from salon owners from New Orleans to Baton Rouge. Or, you could ask Margarita Bergen, who came to New Orleans from New York and soon became a beloved hostess, knowledgeable gallery owner and renowned social columnist. You could also ask Adolfo Garcia, a New Orleanian who followed his passion into the kitchen — and then into the ownership and oversight of popular restaurants throughout the city.

New Orleans Living asked all three of these successful locals where they’ve been, and where they see themselves going next!

ome entrepreneurs wait years for a great idea to strike. Chris Pham grew up with inspiration right under his nose — and it smelled Swonderful. Pham is the founder of Menkoi, a Baton Rouge-based hair-and-body product line made with natural ingredients. “The majority of these products, my grandma used to make,” he says. “Her hair was always so silky and smooth. She passed away, and I decided to turn it into a business.” In Jan. 2013, Pham launched the Menkoi line, which now includes a cooling shampoo; leave-in conditioner; styling wax and clay products; a scented hair mist; and a creamy, almond-scented body-milk moisturizer made with argan, camelina and jojoba oils. The process of converting his grandmother’s natural recipes involved some creativity. “I had to mix in a few new ingredients,” he says. “She didn’t use any preservatives, but my products can last two-plus years.” What’s in a name? “I just came up with it,” Pham says of the Menkoi moniker. “It means ‘free and untrammeled,’ or ‘untouched.’” Menkoi products are free of chemicals, parabens and artificial coloring, underscoring Pham’s commitment to his environmentally sound beauty Entrepreneurship business. The body milk in particular smells scrumptious enough to eat — is in everybody. but Pham doesn’t advise that. “It probably doesn’t taste good,” he laughs. “ A business degree from the University of New Orleans, and years of Anyone can experience in sales and food service, prepared Pham to move into his start a business. full-time career creating and selling Menkoi products. Now, he spends as much time as possible learning from his expert stylists. “I’m learning about different ingredients all the time,” he says. “I want to know what the next big thing is.” Though Pham spends a lot of time at the salon, he also enjoys representing his products in person. “I don’t have any sales reps yet, so I’m going out there and introducing my products to stores,” he says. “It’s tough, but once you go out there and do it a couple times, it’s like second nature.” Along with expanding the Menkoi brand, Pham aims to appeal to customers across cultures; he notes that his products work for all hair types. “I’m trying to make this brand a lifestyle movement,” he says. “We have a lot of multicultural clients.” Menkoi Hair Studio stylists regularly create video tutorials to teach customers how to use the line — and recently, the salon kicked off its in-person events calendar. On Nov. 3, Menkoi stylists will hold an airbrush makeup class, including equipment, plenty of practice opportunities and a portfolio- building photo shoot. Pham says that a major benefit of running his own business is getting to spend more time with his family. He moved to Baton Rouge to be closer to his fiancée, with whom he has a 1-year-old son. “I’m trying to be there as much as I can for him,” he says. “When I was working full-time as a salesman, I had to be at work from 8 am to 9 pm — so whenever I came home, he was always sleeping.” The young father sees himself setting an example for his son. “Entrepreneurship is in everybody,” he says. “Anyone can start a business.” menkoi.me —Lianna Patch 42 New Orleans Living l November 2014 MARGARITA BERGEN Social Butterfly

arling — if you haven’t met Margarita Bergen, you probably haven’t been to a New Orleans party in Dthe past 30 years. Known for her presence at soirées all over town, Bergen is legendary for her wild hats, irrepressible spirit and endless enthusiasm. Born in the Dominican Republic, Bergen moved to New York City as a teenager, where she earned a master’s degree in bilingual education at the City College of New York. She followed that degree with a post-master’s in administration and supervision of schools, working with public schools throughout the state of New York and consulting with the U.S. Department of Education. Bergen came to New Orleans for the first time in the late ’70s, after breaking up with her boyfriend in New York. “My mother was living here,” Bergen says. “She took me to this gallery, and I fell in love. I thought it would be fun to work in a gallery like that.” In 1983, she opened Bergen Galleries, a French Quarter art emporium, which she operated for nearly 20 years. She sold the business in 2000, moving from her apartment above the gallery to a space in the Marigny. Last fall, she bought Casell Gallery from artist Joachim Casell, and relocated the new Casell-Bergen Gallery to 1305 Decatur St. from its former Royal Street storefront. She’s been named one of New Orleans CityBusiness’ Women of the Year, and has reigned over several Carnival krewes, including Cork and Shangri-La. “I was the first local queen of the Carnaval Latino,” she says. Along with toting Chiquita, she often carries a camera to snap photos of party guests having a good time. “I’m very fortunate, because I take nice photographs,” she says. “They may not be the best-quality photographs, but the expressions on people’s faces — they are so happy to be photographed.” Bergen has taken advantage of the advent of social media to share her enthusiasm and nightly itinerary with more fans and friends. “New Orleans has so much to offer,” she says. “Before, there were not too many places that knew what was going on. Now, because of social media, it’s so much easier for me to share.” Her weekly blog offers a roundup of her adventures; it’s punctuated with adjectives like “fabulous,” “lovely” and of course, “darling.” “I like writing blogs,” Bergen says. “I’m not a fiction person. As a teenager, he worked in restaurants, making his way up the service-industry ladder, while studying political science, history and Latin American studies at the University of Texas, Austin. “I was on a career path to be a lawyer, and the closer I got to that goal, the less I was convinced that was what I wanted to do,” he says. After graduating from college, Garcia returned to New Orleans to work. He applied to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York — and when he was accepted, he started a “whole new life,” he says. “I got a suitcase. I didn’t even know where I was going. I’d never been north of Slidell.” Garcia stayed in New York for nine years, getting married and starting a family. “The whole time, I was working in big restaurants as I honed my craft,” he says. “‘Craft’ is a very important word for me. I think what we do is a craft, not an art. So many people want to go to culinary school, and they think of it as an art — but you have to know how to use your tools.” During his tenure in New York, the chef continued to visit New Orleans. “I saw the culinary scene in the city really moving forward,” he says. “It was kind of like a game of jump rope. I was waiting to jump in.” When he saw Susan Spicer, John Neal and other chefs exploring new takes on New Orleans dishes, Garcia knew it was time to join the game. “I said, ‘I’m ‘Craft’ is a very going to take advantage of the fact that I’m Latino, and important word for my cultural background,’” “ he recalls. “‘I’m going to pin me. I think what we my success on that unique do is a craft, not an heritage.’” art. A string of eateries with lyrical names followed: La Boca, a Mano, Gusto — and in 2012, Garcia and multiple partners opened High Hat Café and Ancora Pizzeria & Salumeria next door to each other on Freret Street. “I’m never alone,” he says. “I have more partners than you can shake a stick at. That’s my formula — teaming up with people I respect and have faith in, and using my experience and resources to be successful.” This month, Garcia will receive the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s Galvez Cup to honor his support of the organization over the years. “I’m definitely humbled by my selection,” he says. “To me, it will be a bookmark in my career, where I can feel like the work that we do … has an impact on the younger generation.” The award presentation takes place at the foundation’s Azúcar Ball, an annual celebration of Latin culture; this year’s theme, La Bamba, pays homage to Mexican food, art and dance. “Their growth has been incredible,” Garcia says of the foundation. “Azúcar is the premier Latin social event, and now everybody wants to be there.” Though his restaurant concepts surpass continental borders, Garcia is happy right here. “I think I decided a long time ago that when I leave New Orleans, it’ll be in a box — if I leave,” he says. “I feel 100 percent New Orleanian, but I also feel 100 percent Latin. I consider myself bicultural.” —Lianna Patch

SCORPIO October 24–November 22 On Nov. 6, when the full moon enters Taurus, Venus will also be in Scorpio conjunct Saturn, and Mars in Capricorn conjunct Pluto. With Mars also square Uranus, you may feel like breaking free from a romantic relationship or a business association. However, the former energies compel a partner or an employer to want you to stay. On Nov. 8, when the moon is in the flexible sign of Gemini, announcing your exit may be easier. SAGITTARIUS November 23–December 21 A new moon enters your adventurous sign at 6:32 am on Nov. 22. With the new moon conjunct Venus square Neptune, you may begin a relationship with a woman whom you perceive as glamorous. You and your buddies will feel courageous and discuss hopping on a ship. Mars in the pragmatic sign of Capricorn will help you to ensure that finances are secure before embarking upon that exciting journey. The pragmatic Mars position will also help you to view that new relationship with a woman in a more realistic manner. CAPRICORN December 22–January 20 With Mars conjunct Pluto in your sign, you may feel especially stringent — or some may accuse you of acting controlling. At best, you can use the astrological energy to focus and to reach your objectives, or to organize a business or project. The angles are especially auspicious for overseeing estate issues or financial-management responsibilities. AQUARIUS January 21–February 19 Aquarius gets along well with its adventurous and visionary buddy Sagittarius. On Nov. 22, when the new moon enters Sagittarius and conjuncts Venus, the discussion between you and pals may center on international travel and adventure. If you embark on a hiking trip, you may each sleep in a separate tent — as both Aquarius and Sagittarius need a lot of autonomous space. PISCES February 20–March 20 The Nov. 6 full moon in Taurus gets along well with Pisces. The energies can be combined to create a wonderful photography project or to put together the greatest of culinary meals. Your culinary creation will possibly include vegetables and herbs grown in your own garden. ARIES March 21–April 20 The new moon, Venus and the sun falling into your ninth astrological house on Nov. 22 may have you thinking about UFOs and philosophical subjects or heading to a Zen retreat. If nothing else, the energy will give you a boost of optimism and help to renew your faith. TAURUS April 21–May 21 The new moon on Nov. 22 is considered exalted when it enters your sensual sign. You will feel like the ultimate earth goddess as the moon forms a great aspect to Mars conjunct Pluto in Capricorn. You may use the energy to complete an overdue project at home. You may also use the astrological aspects to delve deeply into an endeavor that requires research. GEMINI May 22–June 21 When the new moon enters Sagittarius on Nov. 22, and lights up the partnership sector of your chart, you and your companion may take a language class together. You may apply the knowledge of that language and journey to an exotic locale. Since Gemini and Sagittarius are both signs that have to do with speaking, you may communicate more effectively with each other on this upbeat day. CANCER June 22–July 21 The exalted new moon in Taurus will light up your astrological house of groups and friends. You and your companions may volunteer for the food drive. On a personal level, you and pals may dine at a place like Satsuma Cafe in the Bywater. Fresh greens and farm eggs are delivered daily to this hip eatery, and the food items are made from scratch. LEO July 22–August 23 On the day of the full moon in Taurus on Nov. 6, a standoff could occur. Because of an astrological fixed T-square, you may desire one objective and a friend or lover may steadfastly desire another. On Nov. 8, when the moon moves into the flexible and communicative sign of Gemini, a discussion with others may prove more amicable. VIRGO August 24–September 23 Virgo gets along well with Mercury in Scorpio for combining analysis with intuition. Virgo also likes Mars in Capricorn conjunct Pluto for accomplishing tasks and reaching objectives. With Mars also squaring Uranus, you sometimes feel like stopping one project to embark upon another. However, the aforementioned astrological aspects should keep you focused on the task at hand. LIBRA September 24–October 23 Uranus is retrograde in the partnership sector of your chart, and your partner may be holding in emotions. Asking him to participate in an athletic activity may help to ensure that he does not become self-destructive. A competitive game of tennis or swimming laps may help to ensure that the aggressiveness is dealt with in a healthy way. Carolyn Bufkin (504) 888-8863 carolynbufkin.com Hello Lakeview!
