    SBP celebrates seven decades of professional excellence Page No.01 Col No.01 RECORDER REPORT KARACHI: State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) celebrated its 70th anniversary on Sunday July 1, 2018 with a number of programs taking place simultaneously at the SBP in Karachi. These activities were aimed at sharing the history of SBP and bridging the information gap on various functions and achievements of SBP and its subsidiaries. The programs were attended by a cross section of society, particularly school children. The Bank (SBP) organized an insightful panel discussion on this historical occasion covering a wide variety of topics, including macroeconomic management, SBP’s conduct of monetary policy and its role in promotion of credit extension to priority areas and use of digital innovations and technology in providing banking services. In this discussion, current as well as previous SBP governors including Tariq Bajwa, caretaker Finance Minister w Dr. Shamshad Akhtar who also served as SBP governor, Dr. Ishrat Husain, Yaseen Anwar and Ashraf Mahmood Wathra, also participated. The participants shared their thoughts and candid views on their experiences and future vision for the Bank and congratulated executives and staff for achieving several milestones in its journey throughout past seven decades. SBP Governor Tariq Bajwa in his concluding remarks stated that the SBP had always strived to living up to expectations of Quaid-e-Azam (founder of Pakistan) pertaining to professionalism and forward-looking approach in discharging its mandate. A special documentary focusing on the history of the SBP was also screened during the seminar that portrayed challenges confronted by the Bank right after its inception, and its subsequent journey towards professional excellence.

    26th November, 2018 Initiatives to revive economy, fight poverty finalised ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday chaired a meeting of the Economic Advisory Council (EAC) and took important decisions to revive the crippling economy and overcome poverty. The meeting approved a grant of Rs5 billion for Prime Minister’s Naya Pakistan Housing Programme (NPHP). It also accorded approval to utilisation of $40 million for poverty alleviation. The money is already available under the International Fund for Agricultural Development’s (IFAD) 40-year zero per cent loan arrangement. IFAD is an international financial institution and a specialised agency of the United Nations. Talking to Dawn, a participant of the meeting said the prime minister had approved a grant of Rs5bn for the NPHP and it was decided that $40m loan, available under the last year’s IFAD programme, would be spent for overcoming poverty in the country. Economic Advisory Council okays utilisation of $40m IFAD fund The EAC meeting, held at the prime minister’s Banigala residence, approved policy recommendations for a medium-term structural reforms framework for the economy. It also approved a social protection framework for vulnerable segments of society. The framework is aimed at overcoming the challenges of poverty, health, stunted growth and education and enabling the youth to realise their potential and extricate themselves from generational poverty traps.     Tax amnesty date extended due to public demand: Shamshad Page NO.02 Col No.06 KARACHI: The caretaker Finance Minister Dr Shamshad Akhtar said the extension of the date to avail amnesty scheme is due to the rising demand from the public who want to file their undeclared foreign and domestic assets. “The economy is expected to benefit from the amnesty scheme. It will bring in macroeconomic and fiscal stability in the economy,” Akhtar said on the occasion of SBP’s 70 years’ anniversary on Sunday. She also said the interim government has no mandate to sign any new agreement with the International Monetary Fund for a bailout package. However, the next government could take such decision. The State Bank of Pakistan (BP) on Sunday celebrated its 70 th anniversary with a number of programs taking place simultaneously at the bank, a statement said. These activities were aimed to share the 70 years’ history of the central bank and bridging the information gap on various functions and achievements of the SBP and its subsidiaries. SBP’s senior most employee, 95-year old MW Farooqui, who has the distinction of attending the first inauguration by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah on July 1, 1948 inaugurated the Open House. The bank organised an insightful panel discussion covering a wide variety of topics including macroeconomic management, SBP’s conduct of monetary policy and role in promotion of credit extension to priority areas, and use of digital innovations and technology in providing banking services. The participants of the discussion included SBP Governor Tariq Bajwa, and former governors Dr Ishrat Husain, Yaseen Anwar, and Ashraf Mahmood Wathra. The participants shared their thoughts and candid views on their experiences and future vision for the bank and congratulated executives and staff of the State Bank of Pakistan for achieving several milestones in its 70 years’ journey. Governor Tariq Bajwa said the SBP had always strived to live up to the expectations of Quaid-e-Azam pertaining to professionalism and forward-looking approach in discharging its mandate. A special documentary was also screened during the seminar to portray the challenges confronted by the bank right after its inception, and its subsequent journey towards professional excellence.
