Due to its prominent position on Moorabool Street there is a great opportunity to provide connection between the Stadium, Plaza and public interface. As the existing North Entry Plaza will be demolished the activation of the plaza and stadium facade are key to addressing this opportunity. Access There is to be one primary entrance to general admission ticket holders located to the north with a members entrance located 02 further around to the west. Opportunities The Stage 5 redevelopment continues to connect the venue with Kardinia Park year-round, enhancing its link to the city and rail through the new North Entry Plaza. This plaza has the ability to become the front ‘face’ of the precinct; welcoming fans of AFL, cricket, soccer, rugby or music artists alike. It will also create flexible spaces for the local community to enjoy week in and out, from pop-up markets and festivals, to school and community events, to recreation and picnics. 01 03 GENERAL ADMISSION 01. As such, Populous has approached this design to respond to the evolving city of Geelong. creating a stand for the city as opposed to a sport. Creating an enduring piece of public architecture that welcomes all to not just the stadium, but to Kardinia Park and the city of Geelong. Throughout the schematic design process, Populous have always reverted back to a series of ideals, driving the design through all stages. These include: • A stand for the city of Geelong • Harmony between the facade, roof & cricket hub • Responsive to the various programmatic requirements • Intriguing & revealing, yet simple • A dynamic evolution from the previous stages 01 02 03 01. Orientkaj Station, Denmark 9 GMHBA Stadium Stage 5 Redevelopment - Urban Context Report 1.5 Design Narrative Description The design responds directly to its environment and context in a multitude of ways. It’s base reflects the rich industrial history which Geelong is built from; the core builds upon the evolving and maturing urban context; while the bowl and roof sail over the top connecting the design with the stadium and previous redevelopment stages. 01 01 02 03 02 01. Stadium Context 02. Urban Context 03 03. Heritage Context 1.6 Heritage Materiality Description The base of the proposed stand evokes the industrial heritage of Geelong. This is eventualised through the use of solid masonry, found within many of the historic woolstores and factories that once dominated the city, many now re-purposed with contemporary programmes. The brickwork will evoke the solidity of the material, yet also be refined in a contemporary way; connecting the past of Geelong with the urban regeneration. 01 02 03 01. Brickwork precedent DESTINATION NSW 11 GMHBA Stadium Stage 5 Redevelopment - Urban Context Report 1.7 Urban Materiality Description As noted diagrammatically, the central band of the proposed scheme is meant to represent the urban renewal of Geelong. Rather than creating an imposing fortress of a facade, here we play with the sense of light, shadow and activity to create a playful and intriguing expression, with the ultimate aim of creating an enduring piece of contemporary, public architecture that can be enjoyed by all. The facade features a pleated expression that draws inspiration from the iconic roof of the stadium, but strategically adjusts based on the programmatic requirements behind. This allows it to ventilate the spaces within, providing light and views through to the concourses and stairways, yet solid where necessary, allowing the northern light to play across the facade. Adjacent are a series of precedent images that evoke these expressions we’re looking to create.
