Materialism Construction: Keyword Analysis of Bruno Mars’ Song Lyrics Arisara Thongnopphakhun Wannapa Trakulkasemsuk Thanis Bunsom King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Bangkok, Thailand Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] Received 21 January 2019; revised 26 June 2019; accepted 31 July 2019; online 30 August 2019 Abstract Music has long been an effective way to communicate to the masses, and lyrics play an essential role in delivering this communication. Lyrics may contain an ideology and influence listeners. This study aims to conduct a keyword analysis to investigate the materialistic ideology connoted in Bruno Mars’ song lyrics. The corpus of Bruno Mars’ lyrics was compiled from lyrics of 30 Bruno Mars songs in three albums released between 2010 and 2016. The corpus was then compared against the British National Corpus (BNC) to obtain a keyword list. The top 100 keywords were selected based on their statistical values for further analysis. They were classified according to their part of speech, and concordance lines of each keyword were obtained so as to discuss the representation of Bruno Mars’ songs. Materialistic concepts found in the corpus include an emphasis on, or preference for, 49 Vol. 14 No. 2 (2019) luxury objects, brand-name items, a lavish lifestyle, parties, economic power, physical appearance, and objectifying women. Keywords: Aboutness, Bruno Mars lyrics, Keyword analysis, Materialism Introduction In this age of great technological advancement, popular culture (or pop culture) is widespread. As citizens of the globalised world, it is difficult for us to escape from the influence of mass media and popular culture (Monk, Winslade & Sinclair, 2008).

  • A Music Video Information Retrieval Approach to Artist Identification
A Music Video Information Retrieval Approach to Artist Identification Alexander Schindler1;2 and Andreas Rauber1 1 Department of Software Technology and Interactive Systems Vienna University of Technology fschindler,[email protected] 2 Intelligent Vision Systems, AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, Vienna, Austria Abstract. We propose a cross-modal approach based on separate au- dio and image data-sets to identify the artist of a given music video. The identification process is based on an ensemble of two separate clas- sifiers. Audio content classification is based on audio features derived from the Million Song Dataset (MSD). Face recognition is based on Lo- cal Binary Patterns (LBP) using a training-set of artist portrait images. The two modalities are combined using bootstrap aggregation (Bagging). Different versions of classifiers for each modality are generated from sub- samples of their according training-data-sets. Predictions upon the final artist labels are based on weighted majority voting. We show that the visual information provided by music videos improves the precision of music artist identification tasks. 1 Introduction To demonstrate the opportunities of a Music Video Information Retrieval ap- proach, we address the problem of music artist identification - the task of iden- tifying the performing musician of a given track. Music Video Information Re- trieval (MVIR) constitutes a cross-modal approach to Music Information Re- trieval (MIR) problems. Music videos like their underlying audio recordings are pieces of art and are used to accompany or augment the musical track. The visual part adds a second semantic layer to the song which may correlate with the other layers or contradict.

Biography Mark Ronson is an internationally renowned DJ and five-time-Grammy-Award-winning and Golden Globe-winning artist and producer. Ronson spent the first eight years of his life growing up in London, England. Having played guitar and drums from an early age, it wasn't until moving to New York City following his parents’ divorce, that he discovered DJ culture. At age 16, and already a fan of artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Run DMC and the Beastie Boys, Ronson began listening to mixtapes released by various hip hop DJs. Inspired, Ronson confiscated his step-father's vinyl collection and tried his hand at mixing. It was the first step in a career highlighted by work on a multi Grammy-winning album by Amy Winehouse, as well as his own Grammy-winning, global smash hit with Bruno Mars, "Uptown Funk." In the late 1990s into the early 2000s, the New York club scene was percolating with booming hip-hop and glitzy R&B. Ronson quickly earned himself a reputation through stints on the decks in downtown clubs before becoming the DJ of choice for many noteworthy parties. Hip-hop mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs hired Ronson to DJ his fabled 29th birthday bash. These and other high-profile gigs boosted Ronson's profile and connected him with other artists, many of whom were interested in collaborating. His first production gig came from British soul singer Nikka Costa and he found that his experience of working a club crowd informed his production skills. Fusing his eclectic turntable skills with his knowledge of musical instruments and songwriting, Ronson soon embarked on his first solo record.

  • LAMORINDA WEEKLY | 'Pitch Perfect 2'
LAMORINDA WEEKLY | 'Pitch Perfect 2' Published May 20th, 2015 'Pitch Perfect 2' By Derek Zemrak The pitch is in tune in "Pitch Perfect 2"! The Bella's are back in the sequel to the 2012 surprise hit, "Pitch Perfect," which was made on a $17 million production budget and grossed $65 million at the U. S. box office. Moviegoers knew a sequel would be in the works with those results. This time, everyone's favorite a capella group - the Barden University Bellas - must regain their glory after a humiliating wardrobe malfunction by Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) that was witnessed by the president of the United States while they performed at the prestigious Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. With nowhere else to turn, the Bellas enter an international competition that no American a cappella group has ever won. The solid ensemble cast from the original Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) steals the show in movie returns in "Pitch Perfect 2," which includes "Pitch Perfect 2," the follow-up to 2012's Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick (Beca), comedian surprise hit. Photo Richard Cartwright Rebel Wilson (Fat Amy), Brittany Snow (Chloe), Ester Dean (Cynthia), Hana Mae Lee (Lily) and Alexis Knapp (Stacie). Beca is a senior at Barden and working as an intern at a record label company when Chloe discovers that Beca is more interested in her career. The Bellas once again must pull it all together and find the "perfect pitch." Two-time Emmy Award nominee Elizabeth Banks ("30 Rock") takes the directing reins and keeps the movie going at a quick, witty pace.
