FR. LIPPMANN LATE KEEPER OF THE PRINT ROOM IN THE ROYAL MUSEUM, BERLIN TRANSLATED FROM THE THIRD GERMAN EDITION REVISED BY DR. MAX LEHRS BY MARTIN HARDIE NATIONAL ART LIBRARY, VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM WITH 131 ILLUSTRATIONS ^ „ ' Us NEW YORK: CHARLES SCRIBNER'S SONS^;.,j^, 153—157 FIFTH AVENUE 1907 S|0 PRINTED BY HAZELL, WATSON AND VINEY, LD. LONDON AND AYLESBURY, ENGLAND. PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION '' I ^HE following history of the art of engraving closes -*• approximately with the beginning of the nine- teenth century. The more recent developments of the art have not been included, for the advent of steel- engraving, of lithography, and of modern mechanical processes has caused so wide a revolution in the repro- ductive arts that nineteenth-century engraving appears to require a separate history of its own and an entirely different treatment. The illustrations are all made to the exact size of the originals, though in some cases a detail only of the original is reproduced. PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION FRIEDRICH LIPPMANN died on October 2nd, to 1903, and it fell to me, as his successor in office, undertake a fresh revision of the handbook in preparation for a third edition. It has been my object to retain as far as possible every word of the treatise as its compiler left it, unsurpassed for clearness and compactness ; and I have ventured only to remodel to some extent the history of German and Netherlandish engraving in the fifteenth century in accordance with the results of recent research. Dr. Elfried Bock, Assistant in the Print Collection at Berlin, has availed himself of the compiler's notes in making a series of additions and corrections. Max Lehrs. Berlin, May, 1905. TRANSLATOR'S NOTE Some additional references to English Engravers have been inserted in Chapters VI and VII, and a few books have been added to the Bibliography. References to the catalogue numbers of prints described by Bartsch in his " Peintre-Graveur " are inserted in the form : (B. 37). CONTENTS CHAP. PAGE Introduction, i. The Petite Commande of 1664: Burlesque in the Gardens of Versailles ThomasF. Hedin It was Pierre Francastel who christened the most famous the west (Figs. 1, 2, both showing the expanded zone four program of sculpture in the history of Versailles: the Grande years later). We know the northern end of the axis as the Commande of 1674.1 The program consisted of twenty-four Allee d'Eau. The upper half of the zone, which is divided into statues and was planned for the Parterre d'Eau, a square two identical halves, is known to us today as the Parterre du puzzle of basins that lay on the terrace in front of the main Nord (Fig. 2). The axis terminates in a round pool, known in western facade for about ten years. The puzzle itself was the sources as "le rondeau" and sometimes "le grand ron- designed by Andre Le N6tre or Charles Le Brun, or by the deau."2 The wall in back of it takes a series of ninety-degree two artists working together, but the two dozen statues were turns as it travels along, leaving two niches in the middle and designed by Le Brun alone. They break down into six quar- another to either side (Fig. 1). The woods on the pool's tets: the Elements, the Seasons, the Parts of the Day, the Parts of southern side have four right-angled niches of their own, the World, the Temperamentsof Man, and the Poems. The balancing those in the wall. On July 17, 1664, during the Grande Commande of 1674 was not the first program of construction of the wall, Le Notre informed the king by statues in the gardens of Versailles, although it certainly was memo that he was erecting an iron gate, some seventy feet the largest and most elaborate from an iconographic point of long, in the middle of it.3 Along with his text he sent a view.

OPUS Augsburg 2016 Peter Stoll Empire of Prints The Imperial City of Augsburg and the Printed Image in the 17th and 18th Centuries1 Detail from the frontispiece to David Langenmantel’s Historie des Regiments in des Heil. Röm. Reichs Stadt Augspurg (Augsburg 1734); engraving by Jakob Andreas Friedrich: Augsburg city hall; on top of the cartouche the pine cone from the city’s coat of arms; to the right the eagle signifying the Holy Roman Empire. 1 This text, in a Spanish translation, first served as one of the introductory essays in an exhibition catalogue dealing with Augsburg prints as modellos for baroque paintings in Quito, Ecuador (‘El imperio del grabado: La ciudad imperial de Augsburgo y la imagen impresa en los siglos XVII y XVIII’, in: Almerindo E. Ojeda, Alfonso Ortiz Crespo [ed.]: De Augsburgo a Quito: fuentes grabadas del arte jesuita quiteño del siglo XVIII, Quito 2015, pp. 17-66). For the present purpose, all passages of the text which only made sense in the context of the exhibition have been removed. Nonetheless, the 18th century bias of the text as well as the selection of artists which come under closer scrutiny still reflect the origins of the essay. As it was meant to address not only art historians, but also a general interest readership, it contains much basic information about print- making and the cultural history of Augsburg. TEST OF TIME 2 Abstract This paper deals with the process of canon formation for Flemish and Dutch painters from the seventeenth century onwards. We examine how the essential art-historical treatises and art encyclopedias since Houbraken’s Grote Schouburgh der Nederlandsche Konstschilders en Schilderessen ranked and evaluated the leading painters, based on the attention given to them in these volumes. Using standardized z-scores, we map the relative importance the selected artists received in these publications over the three centuries. In doing so, we emphasize the path-dependency and the dimension of time in explaining the endurance of certain artists in the long run. From our research it emanates that the canon of Netherlandish painters is much more volatile than previously assumed. TEST OF TIME 3 “When one does a thing, it appears good, otherwise one would not write it.

• From Artistic Engraving to Reproductive Engraving Through a Critical/Analytical Study of Abraham Bosse’S Treatise
International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 4, No. 7; May 2014 From Artistic Engraving to Reproductive Engraving through a Critical/analytical Study of Abraham Bosse’s Treatise Eva Figueras Ferrer University of Barcelona Faculty of Fine Arts Department of Painting Spain Abstract Such is the ideological disparity between Abraham Bosse’s first intaglio review (1645) and the extended revised edition by N. Ch Cochin (1745), that we can virtually speak of two different works: In order to understand the conceptual gap between the two, it is important to take into account, that when the Academy of Fine Arts of Paris was founded, in the second half of the XVII century, in France there was a fundamental shift of thought regarding art education and training, and art in general. Introduction In 1645 a treatise on chalcographic engraving entitled Traité des manières de graver en taille douce sur l'airin par le moyen des Eaux Fortes & des Vernis Durs & Mols (‘Treatise on the manners of intaglio on copper plates by means of Etching & Soft & Hard Grounds’)1 by Abraham Bosse was published in Paris. Bosse was a pioneer in theorizing on the art of engraving. His work was republished several times in less than a century, and it became a reference point and a source of inspiration for many subsequent European theoreticians, as the versions published in languages including German, English, Portuguese and Spanish can verify.2 In addition to the translations, references to Bosse’s treatise can be found in most engraving manuals published throughout history.

The Brilliant Line: Following the Early Modern Engraver, 1480-1650 September 18, 2009-January 3, 2010 When the first engravings appeared in southern Germany around 1430, the incision of metal was still the domain of goldsmiths and other metalworkers who used burins and punches to incise armor, liturgical objects, and jewelry with designs. As paper became widely available in Europe, some of these craftsmen recorded their designs by printing them with ink onto paper. Thus the art of engraving was born. An engraver drives a burin, a metal tool with a lozenge-shaped tip, into a prepared copperplate, creating recessed grooves that will capture ink. After the plate is inked and its flat surfaces wiped clean, the copperplate is forced through a press against dampened paper. The ink, pulled from inside the lines, transfers onto the paper, printing the incised image in reverse. Engraving has a wholly linear visual language. Its lines are distinguished by their precision, clarity, and completeness, qualities which, when printed, result in vigorous and distinctly brilliant patterns of marks. Because lines once incised are very difficult to remove, engraving promotes both a systematic approach to the copperplate and the repetition of proven formulas for creating tone, volume, texture, and light. The history of the medium is therefore defined by the rapid development of a shared technical knowledge passed among artists dispersed across Renaissance and Baroque (Early Modern) Europe—from the Rhine region of Germany to Florence, Nuremberg, Venice, Rome, Antwerp, and Paris. While engravers relied on systems of line passed down through generations, their craft was not mechanical.
