However, financial support is only one way we contribute to the charities’ development. We know that the 10x10 experience also provides the charities with credibility and exposure to an entirely new network of young professionals. This exposure facilitates new learnings, connections and opportunities with supporters, mentors, donors and corporates.     AFRICAN AUSTRALIAN COMMUNITIES Mapping HIV health AND HIV: promotion programs and resources INTRODUCTION HIV is an emerging issue for African communities in Australia. As with other migrants from regions with a high prevalence of HIV, African Australian communities can experience higher rates of HIV than the Australian population as a whole. While the actual number of African-born people in Australia who have been diagnosed with HIV is low, they may face a number of challenges that affect their quality of life, such as late and unexpected diagnosis; immigration issues; and difficulty accessing treatment while on temporary visas. African Australian communities are also adversely affected by the stigmatisation of HIV and the racist association of HIV with their communities. People in African communities may be more vulnerable to HIV due to myths and misconceptions around HIV transmission and illness, gender inequity, cultural sensitivities around talking about sex, and issues related to settlement in a culture very different to those of their countries of origin. WHY THE MAPPING? A range of programs and resources have been developed by NGOs and government agencies to address these issues - both for African communities and for other culturally and linguistically diverse CALD communities facing similar challenges. However because most of this work has been done at state/territory level, many service providers and health promotion agencies are not aware of valuable programs that have been implemented in jurisdictions other than their own.     CORPORATE VOLUNTEER - 2014 NSW Corporate Volunteer of the Year Kate Boyle Employer: National Australia Bank (MLC) Kate volunteers with: Life Changing Experiences Foundation Inc Kate is the Chair of Life Changing Experiences Foundation, a service which helps Australia’s most marginalised girls grow into successful women. Kate originally started as a volunteer Big Sister for the SiSTER2sister program, which is the Foundation’s core initiative. The majority of girls needing mentors have suffered abuse or neglect and need a positive role model in their lives to help stop their downward spiral. She has been extremely dedicated to her Little Sister for the past 7 years despite many obstacles. Kate’s unwavering involvement has literally saved her Little Sister’s life and helped provide a safe environment for her Little Sister’s children to live. With Kate’s help, her Little sister is now studying and her two little girls are happily in Day Care. Kate’s Little Sister will be the first person in her family to study and work so this is a phenomenal result. Kate’s work did not stop at being a Big Sister, In 2008, Kate secured the pro bono services of Logicca to audit the organisations financial results, saving them $70,000. Kate is now leading the roll out of the charity to Victoria in 2015 and plans to take the highly successful SISTER2sister program to New Zealand. Kate has raised almost $100,000 for the Foundation over the past 7 years. She has been a key player in organising charity balls more than 500 guests.

Understanding young women’s experiences is important because little academic literature exists about this. With significant numbers of young women settling in Melbourne over the last seven years it is important to ensure that settlement services and youth programs are aware of the specific needs of this group. This awareness can help to ensure that young women experience positive settlement outcomes and have every opportunity to achieve their full life potential. This research contributes to an environment in which little academic evidence exists about the needs of NAYW as they settle in Australia. The literature review found evidence to support the development of gender specific groups: as a violence prevention strategy; to deliver culturally appropriate sexual health information, and; as a more culturally appropriate intervention for Muslim women. This showed that there are benefits of women’s programs, however no published data specifically addressed how and why gender specific programs are useful for NAYW as they experience settlement. Through participation in this research this thesis gave voice to five NAYW to help inform services targeting young people to consider the specific needs and experiences of this group.
