Tour – main route

1. Start outside the Peter Chalk Centre

Welcome visitors to the University. Point out that the tour involves hills and steps – ask if anybody is going to have a problem with it. Check that everybody can hear you.

Then point out the Geoffrey Pope Building, Laver (Archaeology) and Harrison (Maths, Engineering & Computer Science).

2. Walk past Institute of Arab & Islamic Studies and Physics Building and head towards the Sports Park

3. Sports Park

On regular tours you should take your group to the reception desk where a member of the sports park team will take them on a brief guided tour of the facilities. There may be occasions where staff will be unable to lead tours so please ensure that you are aware of the facilities and costs. SEE SEPARATE SPORTS PARK SHEET FOR INFORMATION ON THE SPORTS PARK FACILITIES AND PRICES

4. Retrace your steps down the hill and take the first path on your right just before the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies

Visitors will have had the option of visiting a room in Halls (Lopes/Pennsylvania Court) prior to the tour where a Residence Manager will have talked about accommodation. Talk about hall facilities in general. Differences between catered and self catered, try to give a balanced view of accommodation types. Remind visitors that accommodation could be offsite, e.g Point Exe by St. David’s, James Owen Court, Rowancroft, Northfield (by the Imperial). Relate your (positive!) experiences of living in University accommodation.

The main entrance to the library will be temporarily relocated shortly as a result of the Forum project works. Whilst works are ongoing, the library will continue to remain open.

A large part of Lafrowda will be demolished over the next three years and new accommodation will be built in its place. This is in addition to the 800 self-catered rooms currently undergoing construction at Birks Grange.

N.B. It is likely that there will be many disruptions as a result of the extensive investment on campus. Please take extra care and ensure that you remain on foot paths. In addition, please read the regular “News in Brief” and “Building News in Brief” emails containing further updates.

This is only a suggested route: obviously it is sensible to tailor the tour if there are only a few visitors who wish to see specific buildings / facilities.
