Grade 7 – Lesson 10

Key Points  The Seven Sacraments are signs of God’s grace instituted by Christ and given to his Church.  The Sacraments of Initiation celebrate membership into the : Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.  The Sacraments of Healing are Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick.  The Sacraments at the Service of Communion are Holy Orders and Matrimony.  The Real Presence is the phrase used to describe that is really and truly present in the Eucharist – Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.

[5 min] Invite – The (p. 30)

 Ask the students if there is anything they would like to pray for.  Pray the .  Recite the prayer and Scripture passage on page 30.

[10 min] Eucharistic Adoration

o Take the class into Church to pray in the pews in front of the tabernacle. o Note: There may be other classes in the Church, so you might want to find a quieter area of Church if possible. o Before praying in silence, give the students some ideas of what to pray for: o Is there someone you know who needs God’s help? o What graces do you need to help you in your life this week? o Are you feeling sad? o Do you have any good news? o Do you have any promises you would like to make? o What are you grateful to God for?

[10 min] Discover – Mary as Jesus’ Mother (p. 31-32)

 Lent started on Ash Wednesday last week. It is a 40-day period to prepare for Easter by praying, fasting, and almsgiving.  The Feast of the Annunciation is March 25th – nine months before Christmas Day.  Read and discuss Mary’s life and willingness to do God’s will. o How did Mary’s “Yes” change the world? o Why is Mary a model for us?

[5 min] Lenten Plan

 Hand out the Lenten Plan worksheet. Give the students time to think about what they want to do for Lent, then discuss. o Note: Self-Denial means giving up certain habits or food in order to strengthen our willpower and improve our lives. We give these things up as a sacrifice, which we can offer up as a penance for someone else.

[10 min] Discover – It All Starts with Jesus (p. 254)

 The Seven Sacraments are signs of God’s grace instituted by Christ and given to his Church.  How do the People of God reform rituals? (read, process, sing)  What materials are provided? (wheat, grapes, vestments)  Why do we say that Jesus himself is a Sacrament? (He is a visible sign of the mystery of the Holy Trinity.)

 The Sacraments of Initiation celebrate membership into the Catholic Church: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.  The Sacraments of Healing are Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick.  The Sacraments at the Service of Communion are Holy Orders and Matrimony.  How did Jesus institute the Sacraments?  Why is the Edict of Milan so important? o During the first three centuries of the Church, Christianity was outlawed by the Roman Empire, and many Christians were martyred. In the year 313, Emperor Constantine converted to the Christian faith and he legalized Christianity. Soon it became the empire’s official religion and Christendom flourished for the next thousand years, inspiring many artists and architects in Europe, as well as many great saints. o Show pictures of Christian architecture and art. . [10 min] Discover – Christ Acts in the Church (p. 258-259)

 The Real Presence is the phrase used to describe that Jesus is really and truly present in the Eucharist – Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.  How is Christ present today when we worship?  Write two column headings on the white board: Jewish Tradition and Christian tradition. Have the students list points in each column after reading page 259.

[5 min] Live - Our Catholic Life (p. 260)

 We receive Sanctifying Grace by obeying God’s commandments, going to Mass, and maintaining a regular prayer life. When we are in a state of mortal sin, we no longer live in the state of grace until we confess our sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and make a firm resolution to not commit those sins again.
