www.ExpressGayNews.com • June 17, 2002 Q1 CYMK CoverCover StoryStory Even though her astonishing voice makes it seem predestined, stardom has been a long time coming for Anastacia. The Chicago-born diva went through many start-and-stop career moments before her chops were recognized. She traipsed along the edge of the music world as a backup dancer and upscale hair salon receptionist for years with her biggest talent going unrecognized, mostly because nobody could quite figure out what to do with her. She was ready to give up until an appearance on the now-defunct MTV talent show The Cut gave her the chance to shine. Although she didn’t win top prize on the show, the budding vocalist did scoop up a record deal and recognition from the likes of pop superstar Michael Jackson and megaproducer David Foster. Now, she has finally earned her stripes after years of honing her sound and gaining a massive European follow- ing. • Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1
Teaching Classical Languages Volume 10, Issue 2 Kopestonsky 71 Never Out of Style: Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1 Theodora B. Kopestonsky University of Tennessee, Knoxville ABSTRACT Students often struggle to interpret Latin poetry. To combat the confusion, teachers can turn to a modern parallel (pop music) to assist their students in understanding ancient verse. Pop music is very familiar to most students, and they already trans- late its meaning unconsciously. Building upon what students already know, teach- ers can reframe their approach to poetry in a way that is more effective. This essay shows how to present the concept of meter (dactylic hexameter and elegy) and scansion using contemporary pop music, considers the notion of the constructed persona utilizing a modern musician, Taylor Swift, and then addresses the pattern of the love affair in Latin poetry and Taylor Swift’s music. To illustrate this ap- proach to connecting ancient poetry with modern music, the lyrics and music video from one song, Taylor Swift’s Blank Space (2014), are analyzed and compared to poems by Catullus. Finally, this essay offers instructions on how to create an as- signment employing pop music as a tool to teach poetry — a comparative analysis between a modern song and Latin poetry in the original or in translation. KEY WORDS Latin poetry, pedagogy, popular music, music videos, song lyrics, Taylor Swift INTRODUCTION When I assign Roman poetry to my classes at a large research university, I re- ceive a decidedly unenthusiastic response. For many students, their experience with poetry of any sort, let alone ancient Latin verse, has been fraught with frustration, apprehension, and confusion.

  • SOUL ASYLUM Biography by Arthur Levy
SOUL ASYLUM biography by Arthur Levy “It’s a crazy mixed up world out there, Someone’s always got a gun and it’s all about money You live with loneliness, or you live with somebody who’s crazy It’s just a crazy mixed up world …” (“Crazy Mixed Up World”) Chapter 1. Every Cloud Has One Renewed and revitalized, Soul Asylum founders Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy return to rock’s front line with THE SILVER LINING, their first new studio release since 1998’s Candy From a Stranger. That album inadvertently kicked off a seven-year sabbatical for the group, which telescoped into the death of bassist Karl Mueller in June 2005, the other founding member of the triumvirate that has steered Soul Asylum through rock’s white water for the past two decades plus. The re-emergence of the group on THE SILVER LINING is as much a reaffirmation of Soul Asylum’s commitment to the music as it is a dedication to Karl, who worked and played on the album right up until the end. They were joined in the studio by not-so-new heavyweight Minneapolis drummer Michael Bland (who has played with everyone from Paul Westerberg to Prince). The band is now complemented by Tommy Stinson on bass, a member of fellow Twin Cities band the Replacements since age 13, and a pal of Dan’s since he was in high school and Tommy in junior high. Tommy was the only friend that Karl could endorse to replace himself in the band. This hard-driving lineup was introduced for the first time in October 2005, when they played sold-out showcase dates at First Avenue in Minneapolis and the Bowery Ballroom in New York – within three days.

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Color Me Weird by Robert Tacoma Color Me Badd. Emerging in 1991 with the album C.M.B., Color Me Badd helped to define the smooth R&B trend called “ New Jack swing. ” Whether the band ’ s actual influence upon later acts such as Boyz II Men was as decisive as Color Me Badd themselves would claim is debatable, but they were among the first in the 1990s to popularize a blend of rap, classic R&B, and harmonized ballads in one package. However, after their sudden appearance into the limelight, Color Me Badd slid back towards obscurity with a pair of follow albums that failed to recapture the chemistry of their debut. Although born in different cities, all of Color Me Badd ’ s members — Bryan Abrams, Mark Calderon, Sam Watters, and Kevin “ KT ” Thornton — grew up together in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Like many young singers, the foursome began vocal training within the setting of a church choir, and were able to create a local reputation before entering high school. After taking on the name Color Me Badd in 1987, they plied their trade in the halls of their school singing the doo-wop style of harmonizing made popular in the 1950s. After performing at several. • Billy Mann Official Biography
Biography Billy Mann is just getting started. Twenty years ago, he sat with his ear pressed against the radio, teaching himself the songs of Carole King, Gamble & Huff, Police, and Billy Joel. Now at 26, he finds himself on stage with Sting, writing with Carole King, charting as a writer/producer in his own right on a variety of formats, and releasing his selftitled debut to critical acclaim. Beginning with piano at age five, Billy quickly added more instruments - including the guitar, bass and flute. By age twelve Mann was singing R&B classics on the streets of Philadelphia for a change. Describing his turbulent childhood as a "constant crash course" he found relief at the High School for Creative and Performing Arts (Boys II Men, Az Yet, The Roots, Christian McBride, among its alumni) as both a vocal music and creative writing major. Teenage Billy spent his school days writing lyrics, fronting local bands, strumming his guitar and singing in the gospel choir. His nights were spent getting kicked out of clubs and recording studios -- underage but determined to hear Philly sound at work. "I remember trying to hide in an alcove at Sigma Sound while Patti Labelle was recording, being found, and tossed out." Mann has since returned to the legendary studio as a client. At 20, after the common artist trauma of being misled by a shifty manager, an insecure Billy Mann was asked to sing at a Philadelphia Music Awards ceremony to honor famed songwriter Linda Creed ("The Greatest Love of All," among her many hits).

  • Vanguard Label Discography Was Compiled Using Our Record Collections, Schwann Catalogs from 1953 to 1982, a Phono-Log from 1963, and Various Other Sources
Discography Of The Vanguard Label Vanguard Records was established in New York City in 1947. It was owned by Maynard and Seymour Solomon. The label released classical, folk, international, jazz, pop, spoken word, rhythm and blues and blues. Vanguard had a subsidiary called Bach Guild that released classical music. The Solomon brothers started the company with a loan of $10,000 from their family and rented a small office on 80 East 11th Street. The label was started just as the 33 1/3 RPM LP was just gaining popularity and Vanguard concentrated on LP’s. Vanguard commissioned recordings of five Bach Cantatas and those were the first releases on the label. As the long play market expanded Vanguard moved into other fields of music besides classical. The famed producer John Hammond (Discoverer of Robert Johnson, Bruce Springsteen Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan and Aretha Franklin) came in to supervise a jazz series called Jazz Showcase. The Solomon brothers’ politics was left leaning and many of the artists on Vanguard were black-listed by the House Un-American Activities Committive. Vanguard ignored the black-list of performers and had success with Cisco Houston, Paul Robeson and the Weavers.
