SANCHAAR Media Guide: A Recommended Language Manual For Improved Reporting On Sexual Minorities In India SANCHAAR Media Guide A Recommended Language Manual for Improved Reporting On Sexual Minorities in India SANCHAAR PROJECT 2015 The Humsafar Trust was supported by India HIV/AIDS Alliance, through Pehchan Innovations Fund GFATM Round 9 © The Humsafar Trust : First Edition. Year 2015. Version 1.0. The Humsafar Trust Page 1 SANCHAAR Media Guide: A Recommended Language Manual For Improved Reporting On Sexual Minorities In India FOREWORD The lexicon of same-sex relations in the human is sparsely populated. And that is not only because it was not understood but because it was stigmatised by religion and mainstream heterosexual society. Even today, the term “sodomy” and “catamites” are used in many legal documents and discourses in the USA and these were derived from Biblical texts. The first stirrings of movement on a rational basis to describe same-sex relations started in Europe a little before the region plunged into what are called World War I and World War II. Both were really wars fought by European Nation States and drew in both resources and knowledge from the colonies. Thus Edward Carpenter in England, Magnus Hirschfield in Germany, Havelock Ellis is Austria, all tried their hand at “naming” this phenomenon which was ancient in that they find mention in all human societies across the globe obviously making it a cross=species sexual behaviour. However, as the Upanishads say: “Defining reality or verbalising it – the’Vakas it is called in Sanskrit, took a very long time in secular sciences.

  • Results and Discussion 83 RESULTS and DISCUSSION the Interest That Indian Women Showed in Ornamentation and Aesthetic Expression
Results and Discussion RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The interest that Indian women showed in ornamentation and aesthetic expression through their costumes has been documented well. It is pertinent to understand the messages that they conveyed through their sartorial preferences which is documented in various forms sculptures, scriptures, literature, paintings, costume archives, cinema, media –advertisements and magazines etcetera. Each community and ethnic group maintained unique characteristics, which become symbols of recognition and identification and served to establish their cultural affiliation. Central to this was the Indian woman who was the symbol of patriarchal society. She combined both the functions of being the nurturer and protector of her household and cultural ethos of the society. The woman was as important part as the man; of the Indian society, which embraced both the indoor and outdoor roles within the social- cultural paradigms of the community. The span of evolution of Indian women’s costume, especially the draped version, the sari has undergone immense changes, however to interpret the semiology of the era bygone is rather complex; as one can attempt to understand and decode the tacit meaning through the lens of current observation only. Since the people who shared the ancient set of rules or code for contextual reading that enables us to connect the signifier with the signified are not present, this will prove to be delimiting. The Indian fashion scene began receiving its due credibility and attention from 1980’s onwards and gained the industry recognition in 21st century: hence this research focuses on new millennium to understand the Indian Fashion System.

  • Cobbling Together the Dream Indian Eleven
COBBLING TOGETHER THE DREAM INDIAN ELEVEN Whenever the five selectors, often dubbed as the five wise men with the onerous responsibility of cobbling together the best players comprising India’s test cricket team, sit together to pick the team they feel the heat of the country’s collective gaze resting on them. Choosing India’s cricket team is one of the most difficult tasks as the final squad is subjected to intense scrutiny by anybody and everybody. Generally the point veers round to questions such as why batsman A was not picked or bowler B was dropped from the team. That also makes it a very pleasurable hobby for followers of the game who have their own views as to who should make the final 15 or 16 when the team is preparing to leave our shores on an away visit or gearing up to face an opposition on a tour of our country. Arm chair critics apart, sports writers find it an enjoyable professional duty when they sit down to select their own team as newspapers speculate on the composition of the squad pointing out why somebody should be in the team at the expense of another. The reports generally appear on the sports pages on the morning of the team selection. This has been a hobby with this writer for over four decades now and once the team is announced, you are either vindicated or amused. And when the player, who was not in your frame goes on to play a stellar role for the country, you inwardly congratulate the selectors for their foresight and knowledge.

SUNDAY, JUNE 28, 2020 (PAGE 4) SPORTS A Dream Indian Cricket Team Sunil Fernandes The advent of limited-over cricket from the 1970s has irrevocably changed the way the game is played. With all fixtures locked down, one cricket fan lets his mind wander to what might have been. Vasant Raji, India’s oldest first-class cricketer, passed away recently. He was 100 years old. His passing, perhaps, is a time for cricket to remember and cele- brate some of the other great stalwarts of Indian test cricket too – especially when the coronavirus pandemic has meant no sporting events can take place. India played its ever first ever test match at the historic Lords Cricket Ground in 1932 against England. Forty-two years later, in 1974, India played its first ever limited-over international, also in England.
