BLUE JACKETS NOTES ENTERING THEIR 19th SEASON Columbus enters its 19th NHL season, looking to continue its upward trajectory and earn the seventh winning season in the past eight campaigns. The Jackets completed their 18th season with a 47-31-4 record (98 pts.), finishing fifth in the , eighth in the Eastern Conference and 13th overall in the NHL. The 2018-19 campaign marked the second-best regular season in club history after 2016-17’s 50-24-8 (108 pts.) season.

OPENING TIDBITS The Blue Jackets open 2019-20 with three of their first four games of the campaign at . Columbus welcomes Buffalo tonight and Anaheim on Friday. The club is looking for its first win of the season following a pair of losses to Toronto on Friday and at Pittsburgh on Saturday. The Jackets lost at least two straight eight times in 2018-19, but only two of those losing streaks were three or more games in a row (0-5-0 from Jan. 18-Feb. 2 and 0-2-1 from Mar. 16-21).

YOUTH IS SERVED (AGAIN) Thanks in large part due to five rookies, the Jackets’ opening game roster sits as the youngest roster (25.7) for the third time in the past four seasons. CBJ had the youngest roster in both 2016-17 (25.6) and 2018-19 (25.6). The Jackets had the sixth youngest roster in 2017-18 (25.8).

ROOKIE READY The Blue Jackets’ opening night roster featured five rookies: Emil Bemstrom, Vladislav Gavrikov, Jakob Lilja, Elvis Merzlikins and Alexandre Texier. Bemstrom led the SHL in goals with 23, tied for the third-most by a teenager in a season in league history. Gavrikov came over from the KHL and played a pair of playoff contests last season. Texier played two regular season games and eight playoff contests with CBJ. Lilja, a teammate of Bemstrom with Djurgarden in the SHL, finished 10th-T in the league in points with 12-25-37. Merzlikins joins the team after winning the Swiss National League’s Goaltender of the Year award in 2015-16 and 2017-18. Bemstrom, Lilja and Texier each played in the opener vs. Toronto, while Merzlikins and Gavrikov suited up vs. Pittsburgh.

OCTOBER BREAKDOWN After opening the season vs. Toronto and Pittsburgh, the Blue Jackets will play 10 more games in the month of October, including six more at Nationwide Arena. The club will play in two more sets of back-to-back games (10/11 vs. ANA and 10/12 at CAR as well as 10/18 at CHI and 10/19 vs. NYI). Columbus will face four division opponents this month (PIT, CAR – 2x, NYI, PHI) and six Eastern Conference teams (TOR – 2x, PIT, BUF, CAR – 2x, NYI, PHI).

TRACKING TWO POINTS Columbus has lost the first two games of a campaign five times in their 19-year existence (MR: 2016-17). Out of those five times, the Blue Jackets were able to corral their first win of the season in their third game of the year in three of those seasons (MR: 2016-17).

MERZLIKINS MAKES DEBUT Elvis Merzlikins made his NHL debut on Saturday, turning in a 33-save performance against Pittsburgh in a 7-2 loss. The 25-year-old goaltender set a new franchise record for the most saves and shots faced by a netminder in his NHL debut, surpassing Pascal Leclaire’s 28 saves on 31 shots on Feb. 20, 2004 vs. Phoenix (3-2 L). Merzlikins is also the first player to wear No. 90 for the Blue Jackets in franchise history.

BUFFALO SOLDIER Pierre-Luc Dubois, who is looking for his first point of the 2019-20 campaign, has seen success against the Sabres in his NHL career. The center notched a goal and a multi-point effort in all three games in 2018-19 against Buffalo (3-5-8). His nine points vs. Buffalo are tied for the most against all NHL teams in his career (Florida).

IN RARE COMPANY Cam Atkinson is looking to replicate his career-best 41-goal season and a key to fulfilling that will be getting off to a good start. After tallying in Friday’s opener, Atkinson has now scored a goal in each of Columbus’ last six season-opening games, tying an NHL record in the process. Two other players have scored in their team’s first game in six consecutive seasons: Mud Bruneteau (DET, 6; 1940- 41–1945-46) and Yvon Cournoyer (MTL, 6; 1973-74–1978-79).

ON THE FARM The AHL’s kicked off their season in victorious fashion, downing Laval 3-2 on Friday and 4-1 on Saturday. Elsewhere, Tyler Angle (2019, 7th Round) has opened his season in Windsor (OHL) with 4-3-7 in six games while Kirill Marchenko (2018, 2nd round) has 6-1-7 in eight games with SKA-Neva St. Petersburg (VHL).
