ThisThis auction auction booklet booklet is being is being provided provided for yourfor your con convenience.venience. The Theimages images show show the theitems items offered offered for for sale and these items are on display for your inspection prior to the auction. The COA recommends willthat, be ifa youwild areride bidding to Lot #104. on a particularHappy Bidding! item, you review the item on display carefully to assure that it meets your standards before bidding. The items in this year’s auction have been donated by twenty individuals with a majority coming from the Frederic Weiss collection received by COA in 2016. Each item listing will indicate the donor. Those that are not so indicated are from the Frederic Weiss Collection. Each item in this catalog is numbered and will be offered for sale in numerical order. The Auctioneer will present each item and either, open bidding with a minimum starting price, or ask for an opening bid from the audience. To place a bid, raise your bidding paddle and state your offer to the Auctioneer. The bid is accepted when the Auctioneer recognizes your offer and askes the audience for a higher bid. If no higher bid is received, the Auctioneer will close bidding on the item by striking his gavel on the podium. Once you have completed your bidding, the price for the items purchased must be paid to Mr. Coker, COA Treasurer, at the end of the auction. Mr. Coker’s location will be announced before the auction begins. If there is a question regarding bidding during the auction, the Auctioneer will have the final word on that decision. For example, if someone places a bid at the time the gavel is struck it will be the Auctioneer who decides if the bid arrived after the gavel was struck or if bidding should continue. A separate listing of the shells is also provided for your convenience. Both the auction booklet and the auction listing provide the name of the shells offered for sale as well as their size. Please note that the sizes provided are estimated sizes and, while the name of each specimen has been investigated and reported to the best of COA’s ability, it is up to the bidder to know what shell is being purchased. COA is not responsible for any shell that is improperly identified or if the size indicated is not accurate. All bidding is final. The initial selection of shells from the Frederic Weiss Collection was prepared by Donald Dan, obtaining additional shells for the verbal auction, listing, naming, measuring and ordering of the auction items was performed by Julian Lee and Marty Beals; editing of the listing was performed by Julian Lee, Leo Kempczenski, Marty Beals and Harry Lee; the verbal auction listing for the Auction pamphlet was prepared by Marty Beals and David Waller; photographing, labeling and bagging the verbal auction items was performed by David Berschauer, Leo Kempczenski and David B. Waller. The auctioneer for this event will be the illustrious Dr. Henry Chaney (“Hank”). The COA and the San Diego Shell Club are pleased that you are attending this convention and hope that you have enjoyed the presentations, field trips and Welcome party that preceded this event. We expect this will be an auction to remember. So we encourage you to order your favorite beverage, select a seat and hold on. The bidding begins at 7:00PM and it will be a wild ride to Lot #104.
