With the PC Lab On 1 October last year, the Prentice Computer Centre opened its new PC Laboratory housing 60 computers for use in University teaching. Its aim is to provide a computing and printing service for students and staff. The opening of the lab was the result of months of work by the Centre's staff, in particular john Currie and Denis Antonellie and the staff of the PC Support Group. Wilfred Brimblecombe has now assumed operational responsibility for the lab. Initial funding for the lab was received from the University, but the lab aims to be self funding over time.     Resident Programs Chapter 18 Most MS-DOS applications are transient. They load into memory, execute, terminate, and DOS uses the memory allocated to the application for the next program the user executes. Resident programs follow these same rules, except for the last. A resident program, upon termination, does not return all memory back to DOS. Instead, a portion of the program remains resident, ready to be reactivated by some other program at a future time. Resident programs, also known as terminate and stay resident programs or TSRs, provide a tiny amount of multitasking to an otherwise single tasking operating system. Until Microsoft Windows became popular, resident programs were the most popular way to allow multiple applications to coexist in memory at one time. Although Windows has diminished the need for TSRs for background processing, TSRs are still valuable for writing device drivers, antiviral tools, and program patches. This chapter will dis- cuss the issues you must deal with when writing resident programs. 18.1 DOS Memory Usage and TSRs When you first boot DOS, the memory layout will look something like the following: 0FFFFFh High Memory Area (HMA) and Upper Memory Blocks (UMB) Video, ROM, and Adapter memory space 0BFFFFh (640K) Memory available for application use Free Memory Pointer Interrupt vectors, BIOS variables, DOS variables, and 00000h lower memory portion of DOS. DOS Memory Map (no active application) DOS maintains a free memory pointer that points the the beginning of the block of free memory.     In 1991, while experimenting with one of the very first HP 95 portable computers, this book came together. Today, more than fifteen years later, that HP 95 computer still works great, though it’s creaking and slowing down a bit and doesn’t have the battery Explorer’s Guide life it once had; I know the feeling. To The I would like to invite you to wander through this book, to see what an eleven-ounce computer could do, not all that long ago. Rumor has it that HP later released very nice palmtop computers with 100 HP 95 and 200 model numbers, even though this book knows nothing about them. I’ve simplified some illustrations for this online version, but text and page layout still look like 1991. On the left is something like the original book cover, complete with the old rabbit logo. One edition of this book was formatted with Microsoft Word for Windows 1.1. It was printed on an HP DeskJet 500 printer, which R. E. Harvey was a 300 d.p.i. B&W inkjet that scooted through about two pages per minute in best-quality mode, and cost more than $500. Body Palmtop PC Palmtop PC R text in this book is still in Bitstream Charter font, which was designed for low-resolution laser and inkjet printing. There are 112 pages and around 53,000 words. The peculiar page count begins with this title page. Maybe I was trying to make it sound like a lot of pages, while actually keeping the page count down; maybe it was something else.
