2014 Tromso Chess Olympiad Survey – Results The ACP would like to thank all 72 participants of the 2014 Tromso Chess Olympiad survey. We hope your evaluations and thoughts will help FIDE and the organizers of next Olympiads. Among the 72 responders: 41 were Players, 11 were Arbiters, 7 Captains, 6 FIDE Congress Participants, 6 Journalists, 1 Chief of Delegation, 1 Volunteer, 1 Photographer, 1 Member of the Technical Administration Panel, 1 Coach, and 1 Commentator. Remark: The numbers don’t sum up to 72 as some of the participants had more than one function. (90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with an increment of 30 seconds starting from move 1) 3% 9% Yes Should be faster Should be slower 88% The vast majority of the responders liked the time control used at the 2014 Chess Olympiad in Tromso. Did you like the rule valid at the 2014 Chess Olympiad not allowing players to agree to a draw before move 30? Players arriving late for a game were being forfeited during the 2014 Chess Olympiad. Did you like that rule? Yes 36% 26% Previous rule when a clock of a player arriving late was being started was better 38% Punishment should be less harsh than in the current rule and more harsh than in the previous rule Only 26% of the responders liked the current rule. Many responders suggested a system of warning(s). Among the responders opting for the old rule many didn’t necessarily prefer to wait a full hour. Did you like the new team composition submission system? 10% Yes No 90% The new team composition submission system used during the 2014 Chess Olympiad in Tromso was warmly welcomed. Were the rules of the competition and duties of captains precisely explained at the Captains’ Meeting? 18% Yes No 82% According to the responders the rules of the competition and duties of captains were precisely explained at the Captains’ Meeting. An attention was brought to the fact that due to problems with the team composition submission for the first round some of the captains were unable to participate in the Captain’s Meeting. Were the rules of the competition and duties of arbiters precisely explained at the Arbiters’ Meeting? 36% Yes 64% No A significant percentage of the responders didn’t think the rules of the competition and duties of arbiters were precisely explained at the Arbiters’ Meeting. Moreover, even among responders evaluating the meeting positively, some of them complained that the meeting was too late, too long, and the microphone didn’t work properly. How would you evaluate the pairing system used at the 2014 Chess Olympiad? Fair and suitable for 22% Olympiads 33% Acceptable 45% Must be changed Less than 1/4 of the responders consider the current pairing system fair and suitable for Olympiads. Still, almost 1/2 consider it acceptable, though many complained the system was too complicated and before the pairing were published it was impossible to predict them. How would you evaluate the tie-break system used at the 2014 Chess Olympiad? Fair and suitable for Olympiads 28% 32% Acceptable 40% Must be changed The opinions were strongly divided. A visible number of responders preferred board points over match points, but it is impossible to say how numerous the group is, as many responders didn’t share a thought on that problem. Should teams registering after the deadline be allowed to participate in Olympiads? 3% Yes, without 21% repercussions Yes, upon a penalty payment 76% No 3/4 of the responders opted for a penalty payment solution if a team is registered after the deadline.
