Mobile Media: Protest and Surveillance On the Political Rationality of Ubiquitous Individual Connectivity DISSERTATION zur Erlangung des akademischen Grades doctor philosophiae (Dr. phil.) im Fach Medienwissenschaften eingereicht an der Kulturwissenschaftlichen Fakultat¨ Universitat¨ Paderborn 1. Gutachter Prof. Dr. Hartmut Winkler 2. Gutachterin Prof. Dr. Hannelore Bublitz von Mag. Oliver Leistert [email protected] Abstract Based on 50 interviews with activists and hackers this work analyzes the question of political rationality of mobile media within a systematic framework of studies of governmentality. It shows how through a global and massive use of mobile phones the western concept of the individual is enforced, while at the same time by means of surveillance and other interventions these new freedoms of individual mobile communication get restricted and limited again. Following the presentation of this dialectical relation of freedom and surveillance, a third part discusses the possibilities and chances of autonomous approaches for mobile communication, which operate beyond sovereign or commercial regulation. Under discussion are open source wireless solutions, such as mesh networks. Two case studies underline the arguments: SMS as a means of support and development of protests within the Pakistan Lawyer's Movement against dictator Musharraf, and on the other side the surveillance of Berlin based activists by German authorities over years. Further Keywords are: Governmentality, Surveillance, Open Source Software, Privacy, Power, Protest, Activism, Mobile Media, Surveillance Media. ACTA UNIVERSITATIS UPSALIENSIS Studia Historica Upsaliensia 210 Utgivna av Historiska institutionen vid Uppsala universitet genom Torkel Jansson, Jan Lindegren och Maria Ågren 1 2 David Ludvigsson The Historian-Filmmaker’s Dilemma Historical Documentaries in Sweden in the Era of Häger and Villius 3 Dissertation in History for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy presented at Uppsala University in 2003 ABSTRACT Ludvigsson, David, 2003: The Historian-Filmmaker’s Dilemma. Historical Documentaries in Sweden in the Era of Häger and Villius. Written in English. Acta Universitatis Upsalien- sis. Studia Historica Upsaliensia 210. (411 pages). Uppsala 2003. ISSN 0081-6531. ISBN 91-554-5782-7. This dissertation investigates how history is used in historical documentary films, and ar- gues that the maker of such films constantly negotiates between cognitive, moral, and aes- thetic demands. In support of this contention a number of historical documentaries by Swedish historian-filmmakers Olle Häger and Hans Villius are discussed. Other historical documentaries supply additional examples. The analyses take into account both the produc- tion process and the representations themselves. The history culture and the social field of history production together form the conceptual framework for the study, and one of the aims is to analyse the role of professional historians in public life. The analyses show that different considerations compete and work together in the case of all documentaries, and figure at all stages of pre-production, production, and post-produc- tion. But different considerations have particular inuence at different stages in the produc- tion process and thus they are more or less important depending on where in the process the producer puts his emphasis on them.

  • Koreanovelas, Teleseryes, and the “Diasporization” of the Filipino/The Philippines Louie Jon A
Koreanovelas, Teleseryes, and the “Diasporization” of the Filipino/the Philippines Louie Jon A. Sanchez In a previous paper, the author had begun discoursing on the process of acculturating Korean/Hallyu soap opera aesthetics in television productions such as Only You (Quintos, 2009), Lovers in Paris (Reyes, 2009), and Kahit Isang Saglit (Perez & Sineneng, 2008). This paper attempts to expand the discussions of his “critico-personal” essay by situating the discussions in what he described as the “diasporization” of the Filipino, and the Philippines, as constructed in recent soap operas namely Princess and I (Lumibao, Pasion, 2012) A Beautiful Affair (Flores, Pobocan, 2012), and Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw (Bernal & Villarin, 2013). In following the three teleserye texts, the author observes three hallyu aesthetic influences now operating in the local sphere—first, what he called the “spectacularization” of the first world imaginary in foreign dramatic/fictional spaces as new “spectre of comparisons” alluding to Benedict Anderson; the crafting of the Filipino character as postcolonially/neocolonially dispossessed; and the continued perpetration of the imagination of Filipino location as archipelagically—and consequently, nationally—incoherent. The influences result in the aforementioned “diasporization”, an important trope of simulated and dramaturgically crafted placelessness in the process of imagining Filipino “communities” and their sense of “historical” reality, while covering issues relating to the plight and conditions of the diasporic Filipino. Keywords: Koreanovelas, Korean turn, teleserye, translation, imagined communities, diaspora, hallyu After a decade of its constant presence in the Philippine market, the extent of change brought about by the “Koreanovela” in the landscape of Philippine television is clearly noticeable and merits revaluation.
