As a player under legendary former USC head coach George Raveling, Powell enjoyed two winning seasons from 1992-93 to 1993-94, when the Trojans qualified for back-to-back NIT berths. As a senior co-captain in his final regular season game, Powell connected for the game-winning basket with 2.6 seconds left to propel USC to a 69-68 victory at Oregon State, sending them to the NIT Tournament. During his career, he averaged 2.2 points, 1.0 rebound and 1.6 assists per game. “Damaine worked as hard as anybody and was a great person to have on our club,” says Raveling. "I always felt that one day he would be an out- standing coach, and he proved that at Compton College. Last summer, over 300 local boys and girls participated in the Cal State Dominguez Hills Basketball Camps.

Max Ward Coach Max Ward Assistant Coach begins his ninth season on the sidelines for the Toros. Ninth Season Ward came to the Carson campus from Johnson & Wales University in Charleston, South Carolina, where he served as the head basketball coach and the Athletics Director for one year. Prior to Johnson & Wales in Charleston, Ward was an assistant coach at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. There he was responsible for practice management, underclass recruit- ing, scouting, film exchange and handling day-to-day operations. As Powell’s top assistant, coach Ward is responsible for practice management, recruit- ing, scouting and on-floor coaching. “Max is one of the top assistant coaches on the west coast,” begins Powell. “He’s been coveted and courted by different schools throughout the years and he's always chosen to stay, but I know he’ll eventually get the offer he wants. He’s a good recruiter, a good coach, very well organized, respected by the team and we're lucky to have him here at Dominguez. He has a bright, bright future in coaching.” S Ward participated in collegiate basketball while at Johnson & Wales, and was named the Most Outstanding Player after his senior season. Coach Johnson begins his first year as an assistant coach with the Toros men's basketball program, bringing nearly 10 years of coaching experience to the table. Johnson served as head coach for AAU's team "Up N Coming," one of the top high school programs on the West coast that recorded a 114-42 record over the past five sea- sons, and has seen 33 players earn scholarships to Division I and II levels. Prior, her served as an assistant coach for Washington HS, where his teams advanced to the postseason all six years, and won the league title for 5 of his 6 years. Johnson, a graduate of Southern Connecticut State University, currently is a special education teacher in the LAUSD, and is working on his master's in special education.
