STG and Sasquatch! Festival Founder Adam Zacks are proud to present THING, a new two-day multidisciplinary event taking place August 24 & 25 at Fort Worden in Port Townsend. Offering a diverse lineup of artists from across the globe, the event features a unique combination of music, comedy, film, dance, podcasts, visual arts, and more!

The origin of the name “THING” comes from the medieval term “Ting” which is described as “an assembly of free people to reduce feuds and avoid social disorder,” a definition which inspired the creation of this new venture.

“We are excited to be offering this unique new event for people to come together to celebrate a shared love of music, art, and community,” Zacks says. “It’s especially thrilling to be teaming up with Fort Worden on this event, continuing the ongoing partnership we’ve been fortunate enough to have with this extraordinary site for the past 10 years.”

Over the course of two days, THING will offer a wide range of music acts including Violent Femmes, hip-hop pioneers De La Soul, Mexico’s Café Tacvba, and a joint appearance by Calexico and Iron & Wine. Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy will take the stage, as will Texas trio Khruangbin, Kurt Vile & The Violators, New Orleans group Tank and the Bangas, New York’s Parquet Courts, singer-songwriter Phosphorescent, and indie pop artist Japanese Breakfast, as well as Snail Mail. Actor and musician John Reilly will have his roots group in tow as they tap into the spirit of the old west. Other performances include violinist and vocalist Sudan Archives, Icelandic soul singer Júníus Meyvant, Chicago drummer and beat scientist Makaya McCraven, as well as Chicago singer-songwriter and guitarist Ryley Walker, LA-based folk singer Bedouine, Irish rock band Fontaines D.C., kindie-rock icon Caspar Babypants, and Black Belt Eagle Scout. Rounding out the concert events are Seattle blues- and punk-based band The Black Tones and psychedelic outlaw cowboy Orville Peck.

Other THINGs on the schedule include Napoleon Dynamite Live!—featuring a conversation with Jon Heder (Napoleon) and other members of the cast, as well as a screening of the classic movie. Speaking engagements with stage, film, and television actress Natasha Lyonne and writer, comedian, and activist Lindy West will take place, as well as a comedy set from comedian Todd Barry. Podcast offerings include live tapings of Bunny Ears with Macaulay Culkin, The Tobolowsky Files with Stephen Tobolowsky, and Too Beautiful To Live with Luke Burbank and Andrew Walsh. Scottish mentalist, illusionist, and performance artist Scott Silven offers multiple performances of his acclaimed showWonders at Dusk, and acclaimed Seattle choreographer Kate Wallich and dj Amateur Hour will lead their popular all-abilities movement class Dance Church. A live reading of the 1982 filmAn Officer and a Gentleman, which was filmed on location at Fort Worden, will also take place, and the U.K.’s Architects of Air will display their Luminarium, a monumental inflatable sculpture of color, air and light.

We couldn’t imagine a more appropriate site for this event than Fort Worden and its epic natural setting of Port Townsend. Originally designed as a military base to protect Puget Sound, Fort Worden has evolved into an iconic and cherished state park and lifelong learning center. The fort, featuring 100 historic structures, spans two miles of saltwater shoreline with views of the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, and the San Juan Islands. It’s the ideal setting for this unique event and its eclectic lineup.

THING will feature three primary stages including a decommissioned balloon hangar (McCurdy Pavilion), the charming and intimate art-deco Wheeler Theatre, and the Parade Grounds overlooking Puget Sound. A variety of camping, parking and housing accommodations will also be available for purchase. The event is open to all ages and will feature beer gardens with valid ID required for entry. Kids 13 & under are free.

26 SEATTLE THEATRE GROUP encorespotlight.com 27 Guided by the vision of embodying the people’s theatre, where all are welcomed and represented, Seattle Theatre Group (STG) offers programming that is committed to access for all and features a diversity of voices on its historic stages. It is with these values in mind that STG proudly presents its 2019/2020 season, featuring an assortment of genres and artists of the highest caliber!

STG is thrilled to be partnering with On the Boards to present three innovative performances throughout the season. First up is composer Bryce Dessner’s Triptych (Eyes of One on Another), which highlights the work of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe by blending his controversial images with live music from vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth and the poetry of Essex Hemphill and Patti Smith. Next is the unconventional Holiday Sauce from MacArthur Fellow and Pulitzer Prize finalist Taylor Mac, who takes the stage with a spectacular band to celebrate the holiday season in all of its dysfunction. Following its sold-out world premiere run at On the Boards, STG and On the Boards are partnering with Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas, to bring choreographer/dancer Dani Tirrell’s Black Bois to The Moore Theatre. The evening-length dance work combines live music, Dani Terrell Black Bois. Other dance performances featured in the season include The Sun Still Burns Here—a dance and music collaboration between Seattle-based choreographer Kate Wallich and her company The YC and musician/composer Mike Hadreas of the band Perfume Genius—as well as the impassioned Love Heals All Wounds, featuring the intricate and urban choreography of Jon Boogz and Lil Buck. Recent Tony®-nominated choreographer Camille A. Brown brings her Bessie Award-winning dance company Camille A. Brown & Dancers to The Moore with a program merging dance, theater, poetry, visual art, and music of all genres. STG also welcomes back the acclaimed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and New York’s award-winning tap dance company Dorrance Dance.

The music lineup next season includes influential composer and electro-acoustic polymath Max Richter as he takes the stage with American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) and British soprano Grace Davidson. Sam Green and Joe Bini team up with Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet for a multimedia performance celebrating the quartet’s groundbreaking story, and internationally acclaimed classical tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain returns to perform with violinist Kala Ramnath and veena artist Jayanthi Kumaresh. Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Gregory Porter and classically trained string instrumentalists and hip-hop duo Black Violin also make return appearances.

In the world of theatre, Tim Robbins’ company The Actors’ Gang performs The New Colossus, a play featuring 12 actors telling their ancestors’ stories in 12 different languages and 12 different eras in a single narrative about escaping an oppressive homeland. New Zealand’s Indian Ink Theatre Company brings Mrs. Krishnan’s Party, a play that bridges cultures and expands boundaries by bringing the audience around the dining table and into an Indian-run convenience store to celebrate the Hindu holiday Onam. Manual Cinema’s Frankenstein provides an immersive visual spin on the classic tale, combining shadow puppetry, cinematic techniques, music and sound.

Acclaimed mentalist Scott Silven brings his worldwide smash-hit At the Illusionist’s Table to The Ruins for a two-week run, offering an unforgettable sensory experience that weaves together fine dining, whisky tasting, and Silven’s singular talents in illusion and mentalism.

The holiday season brings two inventive takes on a holiday favorite. First is the return of the smash hit The Hip Hop Nutcracker—featuring MC Kurtis Blow—followed by Mark Morris Dance Group’s run of The Hard Nut, Morris’ lavish, gender- bent love letter to Tchaikovsky’s classic.

Our ever-popular Silent Movie Mondays features a series focused on the Pioneers of African American Cinema, a Star Power Series highlighting some of the biggest names from the silent film era, and a special presentation of the 1923 film The Ancient Law/Das Alte Gesetz in partnership with Seattle Jewish Film Festival’s 25th anniversary. Other returning STG favorites include the Seattle Rock Orchestra with concerts honoring Led Zeppelin and The Beatles and annual community programs such as DANCE This, More Music @ The Moore, Global Party, and Starbucks Hot Java Cool Jazz, among others.

We look forward to everything this upcoming season has to offer and to sharing all of these incredible performances with you! For additional information on all performances, please visit stgpresents.org.

One of STG’s core values is to serve as stewards of Seattle’s historic Paramount, Moore, and Neptune Theatres, and part of our commitment to keeping these spaces healthy and vibrant is to welcome a new generation of visitors and patrons to experience their magic firsthand. That’s why STG is proud to offer free Historic Theatres Tours, led by members of our well-versed volunteer staff.

“Over 450,000 patrons pass through the doors of The Paramount each year. These free tours give the public a chance to learn more about this historic Theatre while giving them a glimpse behind the scenes.” - Josh LaBelle, Executive Director of Seattle Theatre Group

Tours of the Paramount Theatre take place on the first Saturday of every month and guests should meet in front of the main entrance, on the corner of 9th and Pine. Tours of the Moore Theatre are the second Saturday of every month and guests should meet in front of the main entrance, on the corner of 2nd and Virginia. Neptune Tours are the third Saturday of every month and guests should meet in front of the main entrance, on the corner of NE 45th St. & Brooklyn Ave. All tours begin at 10 a.m.

Additionally, Seattle Theatre Group is able to schedule tours upon request for student groups ages 7 and up. This is an excellent way for students to experience the technical aspects of the stage, take a behind-the-scenes look at backstage operations, and get an introduction to the history of the building.
