PARODY FOR THE PUBLIC SPHERE: THE DAILY SHOW’S NARRATIVE ON DEMOCRACY INACTION by KRISTEN MARIE HEFLIN (Under the Direction of Dwight E. Brooks) ABSTRACT Parody is a narrative device that twists the conventions of an original work to create a new and typically subversive form of the original. Literary critics have studied parody in written works, but parody on television has not been closely examined. This study uses narrative analysis to look at how parody operates in the television show, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Findings indicate that parody functioned to tell three major narrative themes in the show: 1) The television news media is not fulfilling its role in society. 2) The political institutions of the United States are not fulfilling their role their role in society. 3) Intolerant ideologies place harmful limits on society. This study discusses how parody works in The Daily Show to produce these particular meanings, as well as, what these recurring narratives say about the show’s opinion of our American democracy and our public sphere. There is growing evidence that eligible citizens are being denied the right to vote and that votes, when cast, may be lost or miscounted or even deleted. Until recently, most Americans have assumed that our elections are basically honest. But with each election, more and more people are reporting incidents of voter suppression and irregular tallies. At first, machine problems were dismissed as “glitches,” and difficulties faced by voters were simply the result of poor planning and poll worker error. -

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is the result of the merging of several entertainment programming trends, notably the news satire format and the talk show format. The Daily Show’s unique formatting raises these questions for examination: What exactly is the political content of the program and who is the audience absorbing this content? Who consumes The Daily Show and what specifically are they consuming? For decades now, the youngest segment of the American public has been losing interest in the traditional sources of news. While their disinterest in traditional news has grown, they have shown themselves willing to consume news information from different sources. One of the most interesting new sources of news is the late-night comedy TV show. Because these programs have the potential to become important sources of news, it is important to see whether they are agenda setting for their audiences. Using two media consumption surveys, this project first constructs a political profile of the audience and then, through a statistical analysis of the guest list of the program, determines whether the audience’s political viewpoint is correlated with the majority of the show’s political guests. -
