Illuminating account of an overlooked crisisBy needlesandpensJoseph O Neill combines empathy and objectivity, storytelling and historical recording in this painstakingly researched book. He takes us to an all too real 1867 Manchester, to locations that remain today, and social and political problems that continue all over the world. Recorded in rich detail, taking account of the perspectives of a multitude of flawed characters, the book paints a picture of the fragile relationship between Ireland and Great Britain and its human cost. The individuals and groups involved in the shaky prosecution of four innocent sons of Ireland, one a Civil War veteran, are shown with their dangerous prejudices, their responses to public opinion and their often undeserved power. We find the press of the time potent and hungry for stories and the pie eating beer swilling hoards who flock to Manchester for sport, no different from the knitting women of the French Revolution. Readers will find many parallels between this overlooked chapter of Irish history and other world events. O'Neill illuminates the way down the often difficult path of Irish history in the way Simon Schama has helped us make sense of the minds and motivations of British Monarchs. An impressive read.

The story of the Manchester Martyrs, Allen, Larkin, and O'Brien. The single most important event in the development of before the of 1916.A thrilling account of the events surrounding the execution of three known as the Manchester Martyrs. Their execution during a turbulent period of Irish history in 1867 united the Irish people in a patriotic fervour and outrage not matched until 1916. The events surrounding the dramatic rescue of leaders (resulting in the Martyrs' execution) attracted worldwide attention and sparked anti-British protests across the globe. Their trial is one of the most infamous British court cases of the nineteenth century and their hanging was Britain's last public multiple execution. In 2006 Bertie Ahern announced that the Irish government would grant the Martyrs a full state funeral and re-inter them in a grave at Glasnevin Cemetery. The plan foundered because their remains could not be located at that time. This book reveals the location of the remains and explains why they will never be returned to Ireland.
