ISSUE 001

COMMITTEE CORNER

Welcome to our new style newsletter.

It’s a long while since we all gathered at Downey House.

During the past few months we have been regularly meeting on ZOOM enabling us to keep up to date with the varying regulations relating to Coronavirus 19.

We have attended many ZOOM meetings with DEEP, CCG / Dementia partnership etc enabling us to contribute and receive ideas on managing these difficult times.

Obviously Downey House has been and still is out of bounds for us. Early in the lockdown a Springboard Whats app group was created. This has allowed members to take part in quizzes, sharing pictures, birthdays, offering advice and generally keeping up to date with the current local restrictions.

Springboard is now meeting every other Thursday at 1.00pm until 3.00pm via ZOOM we therefore encourage all our members to join us via ZOOM. This unfortunately will be for the foreseeable future the only way we can gather face to face. Our next meeting will be held on the 15th October then every two weeks.

2

Members joining in are increasing at each meeting. It would be great if we could all join in using this method. You should be receiving regular telephone calls from a committee member so please discuss taking part in our ZOOM meetings with them. Just give it a go we know its not everybody’s cup of tea

We are planning a ZOOM Christmas party on the 3rd December - more information to follow.

This newsletter contains quite a large amount of information, contacts, telephone numbers etc. This will be updated when required. Please retain it and keep it close to hand. Also information on our Annual General Meeting along with an application form for any member to apply to join the committee.

Sadly we have seen some of our members pass away during this period and we have done our best to offer support and have attended funerals when possible. We will collectively remember them when we can meet up again at Downey House

This newsetter as been posted as a one off and future editions will be sent by email. Should you wish to receive it by post please let your committee contact know and this will be arranged.

We can’t stress enough that regrettably for the foreseeable future emails, What’s app and ZOOM are the only way of keeping in daily contact. Our thanks to the continuing support of Making Space, Readers’ friends, DEEP, Downey House Management and others.

Please enjoy reading this newsletter and don’t be afraid of making comments to us. KEEP SAFE AND TAKE CARE on behalf of us all ….. Paul

AVOID SCAMS

If you have been a victim of a scam some tips on what you can do next

1. Scams can happen to anyone

2.Don't be ashamed about reporting a scam

3.If you have lost money in a banking fraud, contact your bank is the first thing to do so they can cancel any cards or freeze your account.

WHENEVER YOU’RE UNSURE GET ADVICE

If you are approached by someone claiming to help scam victims recover this could also be a scam.

With callers at the door please remember

Stop, lock, chain, check

Don’t believe mail telling that you have won a fortune. If you have not entered e.g. the lottery or a prize draw you can’t have won!

Do not be embarrassed to hang up or say no to phone calls

14

Avoid pension and equity release scams by getting independent advice before making a decision.

Oldham 0161 770 7007 Monday to Friday: 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday: 11am to 2pm Three drunks hailed a taxi, The taxi driver, seeing that they were so drunk when they got in, switched on the engine and then switched it off, and said - we are here. The 1st guy gave him money, the second guy said thanks, but the third guy slapped him. The taxi driver was stunned because he was hoping that none of them would have realized the car didn’t move an inch. So what was that for, he asked. Control your speed next time, you almost killed us.

Bob stood over his tee shot for what seemed an eternity. He waggled, looked up, looked down, waggled again but didn’t start his back swing. Finally his exasperated partner asked, “what’s taking so long?.” “My wife is up there watching me from the clubhouse Bob explained. “I want to make a perfect shot” “ Good lord” his companion exclaimed “ You don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of hitting her from here.”

A man visiting a graveyard saw a tombstone that read: “Here lies John Smith a lawyer and an honest man.” “ How about that!” he exclaimed. 17

Manchester Ship Canal

In 1894 Queen Victoria made the long journey to Salford despite her frail condition . She came to declare Manchester Ship Canal open. It was twelve years since Daniel Adamson had first invited the Manchester great and good to his Didsbury home to share his vision of a canal bringing shipping to Manchester. The canal was such a huge engineering feat - being 36 miles long it took thousands of labourers six years to construct. You can today take a cruise along it on a Mersey Ferry. You can marvel 19 at its size by having a walk through the Salford Quays.
