F15-7 ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY 2018-2019 Annual Statistical Report

During the 2018-2019 academic year, 373 Reports were filed with the department of Student Conduct and Ethical Development regarding violations of the Academic Integrity Policy. Figure 1 captures the total number of reports designated as cheating and plagiarized. Figure 2 captures the total number of reports submitted by each Academic College for the past two years.

During the 2018-2019 academic year, 11 reports were filed regarding violations of the Academic Integrity Policy. 11 reports were classified as cheating and 0 reports were classified as plagiarism. Figure 1 captures the total number of reports organized by the subsections.

Faculty imposes academic sanctions and determines which cases are reviewed for violations of the Student Conduct Code (i.e., 3.1.7 Recommendation of additional administrative sanctions). Student Conduct and Ethical Development will initiate the student conduct process beyond the faculty designation in limited circumstances (i.e., when a student has prior violations of the Academic Integrity Policy and when faculty imposes 3.1.6 Failure in the course). Figure 2 captures the number of reports referred for additional administrative sanctions. Figure 3 displays the academic sanctions imposed while Figure 4 displays the administrative sanctions imposed. Note: two or more academic and administrative sanctions may be assigned in one case.

Specifically, you use unauthorized materials; the (no action) testing proctors discovered that you used a six double-sided cheat sheet during the exam. As a result, the testing administrator assigned Faculty Sanctions - 3.1.1 Oral College of Science MATH 133A the following academic sanction(s): Oral Reprimand. 1.1 Cheating 1.1.4 Reprimand 3.1.4 Failure on the Evaluation Academic Integrity - On December 12th, the alleged student purportedly used a mobile Instrument3.1.7 Recommendation Reflective Paper College of Health & phone to take pictures of exam questions during a testing appointment of Additional Administrative Human Sciences NUFS 9 at the university testing office. 1.1 Cheating 1.1.4 Sanctions Disciplinary Probation It is alleged that you used you cell phone during a test in the testing College of Social center. During the 2018-2019 academic year, 20 reports were filed regarding violations of the Academic Integrity Policy. A total of 9 reports were classified as cheating and 6 reports were classified as plagiarized. Of the 20 total reports, 5 reports were classified as both cheating and plagiarized. Figure 1 captures the total number of reports organized by the subsections.

Of the 94 total reports, 5 reports were classified as both cheating and plagiarism. Figure 1 captures the total number of reports organized by the subsections.

Academic Integrity terms or words found in or relating to the annual Academic Senate statistical report.

1.1 CHEATING

San José State University defines cheating as the act of obtaining credit, attempting to obtain credit, or assisting others to obtain credit for academic work through the use of any dishonest, deceptive, or fraudulent means.

Cheating includes:

1.1.1 Copying, in part or as a whole, from another’s test or other evaluation instrument, including homework assignments, worksheets, lab reports, essays, summaries, and quizzes; 1.1.2 Submitting work previously graded in another course without prior approval by the course instructor or by departmental policy; 1.1.3 Submitting work simultaneously presented in two or more courses without prior approval of all course instructors or by the departmental policies of all departments; 1.1.4 Using or consulting sources, tools, or materials prohibited by the instructor prior to or during an examination; 1.1.5 Altering or interfering with the grading process; 1.1.6 Sitting for an examination by a surrogate or as a surrogate; 1.1.7 Any other act committed by a student in the course of his or her academic work that defrauds or misrepresents, including aiding others in any of the actions defined above.

1.2 PLAGIARISM

FACULTY ISSUED SANCTIONS

3.1.1 Representing another’s artistic or scholarly works, such as computer programs, instrument printouts, inventions, musical compositions, photographs, paintings, drawings, sculptures, novels, short stories, poems, screen plays, or television scripts, as one’s own. 3.1.2 Oral reprimand 3.1.3 Repetition of the assignment with sufficient change in instructions such that none of the original assignment can be utilized; 3.1.4 Lower grade on the evaluation instrument; 3.1.5 Failure on the evaluation instrument; 3.1.6 Reduction in course grade; 3.1.7 Failure in the course; This sanction Merits Review. ADMINISTRATIVE SANCTIONS

Warning – Documented verbal counseling is issued when the conduct conference produces a positive educational conversation regarding violation(s) and academic expectations. Issued when conferences are extremely robust and when the student demonstrated significant reflection and understanding of their situation.

Reflective Assignment - Part of an education-centered approach aimed at assisting individuals to learn from experience and to develop ethical standards in their interactions with others. Development of a sincere and thoughtful essay that communicates your personal understanding regarding the importance of academic integrity, the impact dishonest actions may have on one’s

Academic Integrity Tutorial – A Canvas course developed by the Office of Student Conduct and Ethical Development that acts as a method of informative learning if the student demonstrated a lack of understanding regarding academic honesty during an individual conference.

Disciplinary Probation – Places a student on official notice with the University and is documented on transcripts for the duration of the agreed upon probation period. Continued violations of the University Conduct Code or Academic Integrity Policy, while on disciplinary probation, may result in escalated administrative sanctioning than what was previously issued.

Suspension – Temporary separation of the Student from active Student status or Student status. Suspension less than a year receives a temporary notation on transcripts. Suspension of 1 year or more results in a permanent notation on the student transcript.

Counseling – SCED recognizes the complexity of our student’s lives in and outside of University life. The Student Conduct Administrators issue counseling sanctions to students for various reasons through the conduct process. This is to help address issues such as time management, support options available, accommodation requests, etc.

Workshop Referrals – SCED mandates referrals to various campus partners that hold workshops to support student success and educate students with managing issues. SCED refers students to:

 Peer Connections for undergraduate and graduate writing and citation, time management, study skills, online learning, finals prep, and other related topics.  Writing Center referral to tutors that make their best attempt to work with students to improve their writing.  CAPS referrals for workshops that are designed to improve academic and personal success.  Wellness and Health Promotion referrals for workshops that are designed to improve academic and personal success.

Student withdrew / no longer enrolled – Student Conduct Administrators were unable to adjudicate an actionable case due to late AI reporting at the end or after the semester, and the student did not re-enroll for future semester(s).

Found Not Responsible – When there is insufficient evidence and/or when specific responsibility cannot be determined.
