Thursday, 23 February, 2017 SOCCEROOS TO PLAY WORLD’S BEST ON HOME SOIL The Andrews Labor Government has locked in another football blockbuster, with the Socceroos set to face five time FIFA World Cup champions Brazil at the MCG on 13 June. Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren made the announcement today, just two weeks after securing the Superclasico between Brazil and Argentina. Following overwhelming public support and ticket sales for the first clash of the Chevrolet Brasil Global Tour, fans will have another opportunity to get up close with the world’s best players in the sporting capital of the world. It will be the first time Brazil has met the Socceroos in Melbourne since the two nations played out a 2-all draw in 1999. The dream fixture will see world class players in Neymar Jnr, Philippe Coutinho and David Luiz do battle with Socceroo favourites Mile Jedinak, Tim Cahill and Aaron Mooy. Brazil has won six of the nine match ups against the Socceroos, but our Aussies will be keen to put on a show in front of their faithful. Victory would set the Socceroos on the right track as they prepare for their 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup campaign in Russia, beginning on June 19. Melbourne is no stranger to hosting international football, with the likes of Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester City, Atlético de Madrid and AS Roma having graced the hallowed turf in recent years. The MCG is the only place that can accommodate the biggest games, and this will see Victorians and visitors from all over Australia and the world pack the MCG to glimpse these superstars. Games like this not only boost our economy and major events calendar, they inspire our young athletes to join local football clubs and help us build the next generation of Socceroos and Matildas.
